Customer Questions & Answers

putting on a deck

I'd like to put this on a deck but noticed that it does not come with a bottom. Is there something I can do so that I would be able to use this on my balcony deck?
Asked by: Anonymous
Like you said it is bottomless and intended to drain so I'm not sure a desk is the best place for it. If you lined it with plastic it might not drain properly. If you did manage to install it successfully you should think about the cleanup later if you want to remove it. You will have a large amount of dirt to move by hand of your deck. You might be better off using pots.

Can I stack the 2 beds on top of each other for a deeper root system?

Asked by: Anonymous
Yes you can stack the 2 beds vertically to create a deeper bed but for most vegetables one is deep enough at 9". Things like potatoes and carrots might benefit from deeper roots. Or place them on top of soil that you have already loosened and it will allow the roots to seek deeper into the ground, below the bottom of the bed.

how many tomato plants can I plant in one 4 x 4 container?

Asked by: Anonymous
I wouldn't put tomatoes in this box....save it for smaller goodies.....16 carrots in 1 sq. ft., or 9 beets. or 4 leaf lettuce. (Check internet for info.) I put short non-flowering veggies together under loose insect netting (easiest method). Or cross 2 10' plastic 1/2" pipes with ends stuck in opposite corners for taller plants. Tie together at top & cover with netting. I use cheap tulle netting with clothespins. Add a trellis & grow vertical: cukes, pole beans, snap peas. (No netting here) Keep tomatoes in the ground (or large pots if necessary). Easier to stake.

what are the depth requirements for various vegetables? Not sure if I need to stack or not?

Asked by: Anonymous
Put your 4 x 4 box on the ground, not a deck. Roots can go deep. No need to stack. Have 2 gardens & double the food!

4 ft. x 4 ft. Two Raised Garden Beds with One Tent Enclosure is rated 4.8 out of 5 by 49.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Glad I bought these! I bought 2 sets of these raised beds early this spring so I could finally try my hand at gardening in this climate on a small scale. They came promptly, delivered to my door, were easy to put together, and I had my little mini-garden set up in no time. I now have another 3 sets in anticipation of an expanded garden next season (so I have 10 raised beds in all) and I'm really looking forward to next summer. All my vegetables did well, and the beds themselves held up really well. I grew tomatoes, peppers, beets, kale and eggplant and I've been giving my excess away. The covers were useful in the spring, until the plants got too tall. They went on and came off easily. The beds themselves are just the right size, I can reach all the plants. I mulched and used weed cloth under them, so I had minimal weeds. This is my first serious experience with raised beds, and I'm now a believer!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Long Lasting and Wonderful Customer Support I bought one set about 3 years ago and then bought another about 2 years ago. They are wonderful. When we moved I lost one of the connectors and Lifetime sent me another one quickly. I love my Raised Garden Kits! The plastic covers have held up great!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent at the Price! I looked at many raised beds hoping to replace my rotting wood beds with something composite or plastic. The beds interlock at the corners in seconds, are very sturdy, great to look at and not too cumbersome to be moved around by one person during setup. I am very pleased with this purchase because the price was much less than most I researched and the "early start enclosure" was a great bonus feature. I hope to purchase more when I am ready to expand my garden.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good way to Start Gardening I'm glad I chose this instead of trying to build a raised bed because it was very fast and easy to set up and the canopy allowed me to start some of the plants earlier in the spring when it was still frosty. I little warning though: even though it's an easy setup, read the instructions for installing the corner brackets and hardware BEFORE FILLING WITH DIRT otherwise you will be digging the dirt out later to install the hardware which is necessary for using the canopy.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Easy set up, attractive look Product was very easy to click together. I did not stack mine & I did not use the starter tent yet. Set up was about 10 minutes, not including positioning in the yard with weed barrier fabric. Neutral color looks good in our empty yard. The embossed wainscott pattern on the sides is nice looking. I rated slightly lower for value because I think they were alittle overpriced compared to making your own cedar beds. I used more than 8 cu feet of soil per bed....more 9 each.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Easiest Garden Kit Ever! I purchased the Lifetime 4 ft. x 4 ft. raised garden bed with early start enclosure so my kids can start a garden that they easily maintain. I decided on this model because it comes with two beds and an early start enclosure. Also, my opinion is that the bed walls are more attractive than any other models available. There are no exposed bolts, no exposed brackets and the deep brown color is perfect for my backyard. My kids and I setup the beds six weeks ago when it was still cold out. We assembled the two beds which was a piece of cake (no tools required). Then we threw down a weed barrier and filled the beds with topsoil. This whole process took 30 minutes with the weed barrier installation consuming a majority of our time. Note, we put these right on existing grass, thus the reason for the weed barrier. In case I have not made my point clear, the assembly of the beds are incredibly easy so have no reservations, you can do it! We waited another week before planting seeds in the bed with the early start enclosure. The weather was pretty chilly the following week but it started warming up. We simply kept the soil moist and our little seeds started sprouting. I was surprised at how quickly they grew under the protection of the enclosure. The enclosure itself is very neat. It is made of a very thick clear vinyl type material and is supported my fiberglass rods, like a tent. It firmly attaches to the garden bed so there was no worry that it will blow away. Another feature of the enclosure is it has zippers and screens on opposite sides in case you need to get airflow to your little plants while keeping the bugs out. A couple weeks ago we removed the enclosure from the bed. The enclosure folds down just like a miniature tent once you disconnect the fiberglass rods. Last weekend we transplanted half of the seedlings into the second garden bed that was included in this kit. So far, the seedlings are doing fine and will become flowers that are ready for transplant soon. Then we will begin growing a vegetables throughout the summer and pumpkins in the fall. Honestly, after I purchased this kit I dreaded the idea of going outside and assembling the garden beds and making garden. Hindsight, it was so easy. There are no tools required for assembly, and the plastic bed walls sturdy and should require no maintenance. I look forward to seeing what my kids can grow for years to come!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from 4 year old put them together! My 4 year old nephew actually put them together with me and we were up and running within half an hour! At the end of the first year, they are sturdy, stable and producing a bumper crop of vegetables! Next spring I will use the supplied cover and will likely be purchasing another set to expand my garden. These beds make it easy to grow organic produce and teach my nephew about gardening at the same time.
