Rated 4.9 out of 5 by 12 reviewers.
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Buy it to value The Great Escape This kayak (included 2 Oars and 2 Backrests) comes as a total package for my family. Not too heavy to transport and not too light to sense cheap. This kayak offers a durable and well-balanced construct. The layout and stability reflects the well-thought design. It fits three people with a total weight load of up to 500 lbs., so it’s more than perfect for my wife, kid and I. But if you plan to have 3 adults sit in it, then you might find it hard for all three to sit with comfort, it will be a little tight. A 60 lbs. kayak with a single side handle, it will not be easy for a single person to carry it. Two handles would make the job a lot easier. It comes with 2 Oar holders, 4 fishing pole holders, 2 molded paddle holder, 3 cup holders and 3 polyethylene cell foams to provide watertight seal for 2 scupper holes. The storage area is moderately great added feature. It’s the opening of the storage that is 6 inch in diameter but the actual inside area of the storage is quite decent. Do not just throw thing in the storage area. Here is what I did; Take an empty duffle bag and squeeze it through the storage area then tie up the bag with a bungee cord, tie the other end of the cord to the INTERIOR of the motor mount hole. While your hand is inside the storage area, just extend your arm all the way in the back and you can feel this 3 inch tall pole. That’s what you will loop through your cord. I have setup two bags as a permanent solution to hold small items. Works great for me. We did the test drive in a river where the water was low and quiet. The tunnel hull design allows you to fish while standing but I did not take my chances on that. While staying in the real low water, I tried to tip it over but to my surprise, it kept its promise and float firm. Seat’s backrest provides half decent back support but seats are not cushioned. So, I can’t say how one would feel if you are out there for a long drift. I recommend buying cushioned seats. Keep in mind that it’s a fishing kayak with a wide built, so do not expect speed out of it. Since it offers a dedicated area to mount the motor, we can’t wait to buy the motor mount and trolling motor along with the cushioned seats for this Kayak so we can cover a little more area without huffing and puffing too much. Over all, we love it and are very thrilled with what it offers at such a great price from Home Depot. Go buy it, you will like it. December 8, 2012
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by The Sport Fisher has a lot going for it This kayak has been in service since July of 2011 (4 years now) and has lots of miles on it now. No one kayak is perfect for everything, but this one has a lot going for it. I, and others, have been on it with another kayaker (tandem) and also solo. I really like that my butt stays dry on this kayak. I do not like the color though. The Manta (same design, but not rigged up for fishing) comes in a lime green and it stays cool even in the hot southern Florida sun, but this olive green kayak gets so hot you can not touch it. I hope Lifetime will make the Sport Fisher in a lime green, which is also one of the colors that is safer on the water because of it's visibility (the other two safest colors are yellow and orange). I (we) use this kayak in fresh water and salt water inside and out in the Atlantic Ocean for all kinds of fishing. It is even safe and fun to surf back to the beach (unlike my over $2000 kayak which is dangerous in the surf). It tracks surprisingly well for a 10 foot long kayak. It is not a fast kayak, but that is a small price to pay for the stability and the other features of this fishing kayak. The tri-form hull generally sacrifices a little speed, but adds a lot of stability (which is great for cross-over sports like fishing or diving). When we come up on some tailing Redfish on the flats and stop paddling, the kayak stops pretty quickly and quietly and we do not have to "back paddle" which scares the fish. I attach a "milk crate" to the kayak to carry gear and use a soft cooler to keep our fish fresh. The person in the photo I am sending along with this weighs over 300 pounds and is very comfortable on the Sport Fisher. I weigh 180 and I am very comfortable on it too. I have used this kayak for four years now and there are no other kayaks in the price range that fish anywhere as well as the Lifetime Sport Fisher and I expect to use this kayak for at least another 4 years. Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Best fishing kayak for the price! This kayak is great for fishing or just relaxing during a day at the lake. It's really stable and packed with features. You'll be hard pressed to find a better fishing kayak without paying twice the price of this one! Packing and Shipment: - It arrived wrapped in the biggest sheet of bubble wrap I've ever seen in my life. Despite the protective measures, there were still a few minor scrapes and scratches on the sides and corners of the kayak. It was all cosmetic damage, and after a few outings, the kayak will probably have sustained the same amount of "character" from normal use. Features: - The two paddles break down in half for easy transport, and they're "twist-lock-able" to three different orientations, depending on your preference. The drip guards at the base of the blades don't really contributed to keeping the paddler dry though. - The backrests are surprisingly comfortable, even though they're pretty minimalistic. They attach easily using adjustable webbing and 4 spring-loaded eye swivel bolts that lock into metal tie-down loops on the kayak. The front and back seat locations have their own sets of tie-down loops, and the middle seat location uses the front two from the back seat, and the back two from the front seat. So if you want to install both seat backs at the same time, it's got to be the front and back locations. This works fine, since it would be too cramped to have two adults sitting in any other seat combination. Each backrest also has a small velcro compartment on its back. - Each seat has an extra-large cupholder in front of it, which is big enough to hold every outdoorsman's favorite type of wide-mouthed one liter water bottle. - The paddle clips on the side of the kayak are really convenient. When you get you your fishing destination, just swivel out the clips and snap the paddles in. I just wish they were metal instead of plastic. Since the clips work by deforming slightly when the paddles snap in and out, I figure the stress cycle will eventually wear them down until they break. - The storage hatch at the back of the kayak is a nice extra, but don't expect to stow a ton of gear in it. The opening is only about 6-8" in diameter, and the storage area is actually just the inside of the kayak. So if you put small items in there unsecured, they could end up in the nose without any way to get them back out while you're on the water. The best bet is a small duffle bag that can be squeezed through the opening. I'm also pretty sure the hatch is water resistant, but not water-proof. I splashed some water over the closed hatch and then wiped down the outside with a rag. When I opened it, there were a few drops of water inside. - The kayak came with two scupper plugs installed, and three spare scupper plugs. Solo Performance: - The kayak was well-suited for a single rider sitting in the middle seat. It was pretty easy to get going at a good clip, although I had to keep making tiny adjustments to stay on track - more so than I've usually experienced with other kayaks. - It's incredibly stable, and easy to get into and out of. I even stood up and rocked back and forth quite a bit without tipping. I'm pretty sure you'd have to grab one side, pull up, and lean as hard as you could the other way to tip this thing. - It was nice to have the paddle clip for the extra paddle as a backup, in case I somehow dropped the paddle I was using. Tandem Performance: - The kayak holds two people easily, but paddling at the same time can be a little cramped. I hit my paddle against my wife's a few times, even though I was trying to avoid it. I guess that's the main trade-off for the "compact" 10' length. It worked better for one person to rest while the other one paddled. - To solve the aformentioned tracking issue, a small hand-controlled rudder attached to the motor/rudder mount would help a lot with steering. With two people, the person in front could paddle while the person in back could steer. (Forget those expensive foot-pedal rudder kits that sell for hundreds of dollars. I'm pretty sure I could cobble a hand-held one together for under $25.) - We discovered the kayak was a little more sluggish than some canoes we've used, even though we weren't anywhere close to the 500 pound weight limit. - The description mentions the kayak can hold up to three people, but the third person should definitely be a child, and not an adult. Transport: - At 60 pounds, this kayak isn't extremely heavy, but it is a bit awkward. I'm pretty sure I could have gotten it on top of our small SUV by myself, but it was a lot easier to have my wife help me. - Don't try to pick up the kayak by the side carry handle if you've got the paddles clipped into the side. It will really pinch the back of your hand. Trust me on this one! - The kayak was pretty stable upside down on our roof rack, and after tying it down securely, it didn't move around much on the drive to the lake. I think the top speed I hit was about 60 mph with it on top of the car. Overall, this is a great kayak. Have fun and don't forget your life jackets! December 5, 2012
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Well thought out kayak This kayak has a lot of great features. It is designed for one or two people but the option exists to have three riders. Perhaps two adults and one child. The back rests are comfortable and really take a lot of strain on your abs. Comfortable handle for carrying and lots of grab holes in the bottom also. Wide platform makes it stable enough to stand on and fish from. 2 rod holders make moving easy and clips on side of kayak keep paddles from getting lost. Cup holders for your favorite fishing beverages. Storage compartment is plentiful and water tight. Paddles are collapsible for easy transportation and are lightweight yet sturdy. It is very versatile in the aspect that you can add an electric motor to the kayak for even more fun. A solid kayak made in the USA December 8, 2012
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Inexpensive Fishing Kayak, Great Potential, Huge Weight Capacity,Stable I can recommend this to anyone looking for a lower priced but high quality and stable fishing kayak. I also highly recommend it to larger people that want to go have fun and not swamp their boat. I'm taller and bigger than average and found the seating area and leg room very nice when set up for one paddler with the seat in the center location. I had the entire rear deck and hull area to store stuff and the front bungees were in perfect range for my dry bag and life jacket. Being a wide and relatively short kayak you will not be breaking speed records and you may have an issue with tracking at times (side currents or high winds). That said, this is a FISHING/PLEASURE style kayak. Not a long distance fast cruising machine. If you want a sleek fast cruiser, look at a sit-in kayak or a touring sit-on-top kayak and pay three times as much for it. If you want to fish within a few miles of the launch point or want to go paddle with friends for fun without tossing a fortune at it, buy this one. At a good steady paddle on flat water you can get a nice brisk walking speed out of it. And you won't tucker yourself out doing it. If you really want to make time, you will tire yourself paddling that hard. Once up to speed at a regular paddle it tracks fairly well. Not on rails, but you won't spend all day correcting your path either. For the reduction in top speed and some tracking you will gain great stability, instant turning whenever you want and a crazy 500lb weight capacity. 500 lbs. Think about that. That's a lot of stuff, or two big people. Know this, as a sit on top, you're legs will get a little wet as you paddle. Even with a wide paddle. Pull the scupper plugs in the back and the footwells will drain for you while you paddle. On colder days, wear waders or other leg covers and you won't get cold. You sit high enough on the hull that your hind end will stay dry. The kayak is stable enough and big enough that you can fish in it right until the water freezes if you get cold weather. No worries of tipping over. The interior of the hull stayed dry as a bone the entire day. It WILL leak if you get water in the pole holders. Being blow molded the hull cannot be water tight inside or it will bow out of shape when the air inside gets hot in storage. But, it has a drain plug if you let it sit in the rain or something and get water inside. The one thing this kayak could use is a rudder. Add a rudder off the back and your tracking issues will disappear and the kayak will get even better. With a rudder, five mile river trips would be no issue. Lifetime says they have a rudder for this boat, but I cannot find it anywhere. I found a nice one piece trolling motor mount on Lifetime's website. If you do mount a trolling motor, you may have to license the boat in your state. Check state laws first. Overall, you can't go wrong for a fishing kayak, and it also works very well for pleasure paddling too and allows you to take a friend with you as well due to it's high weight capacity and interior storage. Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Safe with active children on it I bought the kayak 3 summers ago. Very happy with it. I did few motifications by adding the troller motor and deep cycle battery. Love it and plan to make another purchase soon. August 7, 2014
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Very satisfied stable versital fishing kayak I was sceptical about the positive reviews that I read, but after using it once I'm impressed. Took my 16 year old son fishing and a great time. The water is still cold so I wasn't planning on getting wet. The high seat kept me dry. It was very stable and handled wakes from other boats with no problem. The clips on the side are convient and keep the paddles out of the way. We used the front straps for the tackle box and all three rod holders. (always take an extra rod). Plenty of room for the two of us and the kayak is only 10', also paddled up stream (against the outgoing tide) with no problem. April 30, 2013
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Looks Good I have not had an opportunity to use this kayak yet. It's the middle of winter in PA. The kayak looks great. I like the paddle clips on each side to hold the paddles while not in use. There are 4 fishing rod holders and room for 3 people. I think 3 adults would be cramped but I plan to take my 11 yr old son and 6 yr old daughter out on it. Kayak is very sturdy and has a large storage compartment. The lid to the compartment is hard to get back on but I guess it needs to be to get a watertight seal. Included seat backs seem sturdy although they should have a solid piece inside to prevent breakdown. I can't wait to get this on the water. A lot of features for the price. Other kayaks with these features seem to cost a lot more. January 21, 2014
