I've looked everywhere and the only answer I've found is that it simply doesn't. Is there some specific reason or condition that can be solved by a reliable technician?

Answer:
The k2188-1 Weld-Pak HD is not convertible to weld with gas. It does not have the ability to change polarity. You can only use flux cored wire.

Will this work with the 180HD

Even though the 180HD came with the gas kit, I have misplaced it during a move.
I won't need to use the solenoid because the 180HD has that feature built in. I would just be using the regulator, hose, tips, etc... Thanks!!

Rated 3.7 out of 5 by 14 reviewers.
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Easy install, works great I was up and welding with gas within 30 minutes. Love it July 9, 2011
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by poor quality The gas solenoid burned up as I was spooling the wire in the gun, never even got to use it! January 24, 2012
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by It's worth the conversion. Makes nice welds. At first both Home Depot & the Lincoln manufacturer said the 125 Weld Pak couldn't be converted from flux-core to Mig although the operating manual listed a part number for the conversion kit. After some investigating, it turns out that it can be converted. Lincoln did admitt there was a problem with their literature and even within their own trouble shooting guidelines. However, the kit I ordered arrived very quick and installation was easy. It also welds very well for a small welder. July 17, 2012
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Works This MIG conversion makes the Lincoln 125 an otherwise useful welder.Alas, the overall system is not powerful enough to much more than sheet metal work. The 125 is made exclusively for retail sales at the big box stores. For the total cost (of welder + kit) one could buy a real commercial Lincoln 135. Conclusion: Save your money and buy the 135 as it comes MIG ready. April 24, 2012
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Best Price and Works Exactly As Expected It took about 10 minutes to install the kit according to the instructions. Nothing was missing and it worked exactly as it was supposed to work the moment I tried it. The Home Depot price was considerably lower than all other online shops that I found. December 4, 2012
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Great setup, except for the solenoid The setup was easy, the equipment was good. The instructions were lacking. The solenoid worked for about 15 seconds, then burned out. So overall not impressed with Lincoln equipment. June 10, 2013
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Easy conversion, not 100% sold on it though. When I received the kit the regulator was damaged, because the gauges are made of cheap plastic. They got me a replacement gauge sent out right away, but I'm yet to be convinced this welds any better than when it was flux core. Personally I wouldn't spend the money again, buy Miller! October 18, 2011
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Dang nab it! Purchased the Lincoln 125 Weld Pack at the local Home Depot... should have spent the extra for the 140 Weld Pack which comes with the Mig Conversion Kit. Decided I had to have it anyway and got good price and quick shipping from Home Depot.com! Now just need to practice welding with gas also... October 20, 2009
