Yeah, I have the same desire to wire this light to a plug and plug that into a receptable that is swtiched. I don't like the answer Lthonia gave. I pretty sure it can be done but I don't know whether I should connect the red to the plug or just ignore it? Come on, I need a yes and what to do with the black, white and red. Of course, green is ground which I already wired.. Thanks!

These are high intensity light bulbs so you can go up to 40 feet high and still get ample light, as for your you question I would say go flush to the ceiling unless you need a tan

This fixture was tested and UL certified at 18" below the ceiling plane. The clearance is required due to the heat dissipation. Thanks for your question.

Answer:
I can only offer an observation. The bulbs are 54 watts each making a total of over 208 watts in the fixture. Air circulation through the fixture provides cooling and surface mounting would limit the air movement thus over heating the bulbs and ballast causing premature failure of both.

Most likely because of the heat generated by the balast. Depending on your particular situation, if you don't want to use chains, you can mount unistrut to the ceiling and then mount the light to the unistrut using spring nuts. This will put some distance between the fixture and the ceiling. I would check with a professional electrician or with the codes in your area before doing so. If you are in a shop Read More

This will put some distance between the fixture and the ceiling. I would check with a professional electrician or with the codes in your area before doing so. If you are in a shop or metal building, I would still put up the unistrut before mounting the fixture due to ease of installation. It allows tolerances you would not have if mounting directly to the beam. Read Less

4-Light T5 White High Output Fluorescent High Bay is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 50.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Super bright These lights are super bright. I suspended from 14ft ceilings using 4 lights in a 20x36 shop. I read several complainits about the wiring diagram which held true, they sucked. If you are wiring so are 4 bulbs illuminate together they are simple plug and play. I wired mine sotwo center bulbs would illuminate with one switch and all 4 when I flipped a second switch. Diagram is confusing so in a nut shell. Three wires white, black, and red. Both black and red connect to hot and white is neutral/ground or goes to the switch. This makes all 4 bulbs light. Using 2 switches you can hook up black to hot and white to neutral as with any other light. The run a second hot wire through the switch and back to the red and it will operate the outer 2 bulbs. This is handy when you only need a little light and save electric.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Final Product I replaced a basic light in the garage with this unit. Unfortunately it says not to flush mount so I had to also purchase a receptical cover and wiring extension and associated wiring protection. Also the wiring diagram wasn't for the novice. Googling and learning got me the answers I needed though and it did coincide with their wiring diagram. Amazing output and looks great. I'll likely replace the other 2 in my garage as well

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Light fixture The light fixture is truly bright and that is what I wanted. It appears to be sold as a surface mount fixture (per display) but the installation instruction say to hang from ceiling at least 18". Why? Confusing.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome T5 lighting These fixtures are 4 bulb T5 extremely bright and energy efficient to boot. I installed these in my building that is 40x64 with 14' ceilings I installed 8 of these and am very well pleased. I love that they can be switched to burn 2 or 4 bulbs. This feature should come in handy a lot. These are not a flush mount. You have to hang them. But that was ok with me Like you I read the reviews ppl had wrote before I bought You will be very happy with these fixtures Thx. Mike

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Would buy again This light has a hidden feature of being able to light 2 or 4 bulbs using a second switch which is a great energy savings when the extra light isn't needed. The T5 bulbs also have the best lumens per watt compared to the other fluorescent lights.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from GREAT LAMP, "VERY" BRIGHT i HAVE PURCHASED T5 LIGHTS IN THE PAST. I WAS IMPRESSED THAT HD HAD A 4 4 LAMP T5 LIGHT. I WAS ABLE TO SURFACE MOUNT THEM AND AM VERY IMPRESSED WITH HOW BRIGHT THE LIGHTS ARE. IF YOU HAVE NEVER USED T5 LIGHTS....THEY ARE SUPER BRIGHT AND LAST MUCH LONGER, AND DRAW 20% OF THE POWER.
