I've seen this done with many fluorescent shop lights, is there a chance of overheating as a result?

Answer:
Yes you can flush mount it (at your own discretion). If you are worried about heating issue, I just made a couple of 1/2" holes on either side of the fixture. That should give some airflow (since there really isn't much of a way for airflow in the first place). it mounted fine flush against my ceiling with just 2 wood screws (using the pre-made holes in the fixture).

This particular fixture does not have mounting options for installing directly to the ceiling. You could reduce the chain length but I'm guessing you've already thought of that. I'm not sure if it would overheat or not.

NO, T-12 WERE OUT BANNED BY EPA IN JULY 2012. THEY NO LONGER CAN BE PRODUCED, SO IF YOU HAVE THEM PLAN ON CHANGING THE LAMPS AND BALLAST TO T-8 OR BETTER YET REPLACE THE WHOLE FIXTURE, IT ONLY MAKES SENSE WHEN THE PRICE FOR A NEW FIXTURE IS LESS THAN THE LAMP AND BALLAST COMBINED COST.

Answer:
For a T8 fixture, you must use T8 bulbs. With a T12 fixture, T12's, and so-on. These different lamp types vary in power rating, efficiency, and size.
The bulb and fixture type must match in order for the fixture to function properly and also so the lamps will fit into the fixture.

Hey Kevin.
Unfortunately the ballasts are only designed to push certain size bulbs. T8 bulbs will only work in this fixture. T12 bulbs run higher wattages and would not fit.

All Season 4 ft. 2-Light Grey T8 Strip Fluorescent Shop Light is rated 4.3 out of 5 by 330.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good light but...... I bought four of these to replace existing T12 fixtures in my workshop. I was concerned about them being grey but tried them anyway. After installing with the daylight color bulbs, I only noticed minor improvement in light. After unscrewing two screws and removing the light deflector I sprayed it with white appliance paint. Now they are as bright as I had hoped. Huge improvement. A few minutes to paint and overnight to dry was well worth it. The lights are instant on and they work great at start up in cold weather. They are good fixtures as is but are excellent with the painted white deflector.

These were very inexpensive light fixtures, but the trade of is very poor quality (go figure). I would have been just as happy paying a little more to get slightly better quality. Also, these were not available in stores, and so I could only purchase them online... They were shipped in the factory packaging, which was clearly not intended for Ups shipping, with some damage resulting. I was able to repair the damaged end caps manually, but I was disappointed non the less.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Not what I wanted The product is fine except that it uses 1-inch bulbs, which I should have checked because I have a bunch of 1 1/2 inch bulbs. By the time you buy the product and then purchase bulbs separately, it costs more than buying the LED version light. With the LED, I was able to use soft white as opposed to bright white being more natural and better for my needs. Either way, the product is good and I would recommend to another but it just wasn't for me.

I have purchased and installed 6 of them. Several were missing the required hardware (sealed box), all had at LEAST one of the bulb terminals disconnected from the rest of the fixture, and two had bent shades. Nothing I couldn't fix to make them work, but these are supposed to be new items. Very disappointed.
