Answer:
I'm using Phillips 4 ft. T8 17-Watt Cool White Linear LED Light Bulb # 456590 with this fixture. These LED bulbs are designed to operate with the T8 ballast intact. I'm very pleased with the amount of light, instant on and cold weather operation.

No, unless the bulbs are designed to run through a ballast or the ballast in the fixture is bypassed.

Answer:
I haven't tried it, but the LED merchants on line advertise that their tubes are fully compatible with electronic ballasts. I would question the economics of it, given that fluorescent tubes run about $2 apiece, and the LEDS $15. Before investing in LEDs, I'd do the math given the price of electricity in my area.

Looking to install new lights in a 22x22x9ft unfinished garage. Can these be mounted directly to the bare rafters? If so, in what orientation (i.e. along or across the rafters)?

Answer:
I have mine mounted on bare rafters in my garage. As far as orientation goes it depends on the spacing of the rafters

Answer:
Yes, you could mount them in either orientation. You'll need to drill holes through the metal base of the ights for the mounting screws - 3 or 4 wood screws directly into the rafters should be sufficient.

I used standard romex wire, 14ga but should work fine on 16ga since these are low power fixtures.

14 gage or larger will do; the internal wiring of the fixture is either 14 or 16 gage.

Tandem 4-Light White Fluorescent Electronic Ceiling Strip Flushmount is rated 4.2 out of 5 by 42.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Let the light shine bright This light was meant to simply replace a similar fixture in my basement washroom. I never expected it to be such a huge upgrade though. The energy efficiency aside this was a great purchase and it inspired me to upgrade other lights in my basement now.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from T8 Upgrade from T12 upgrad short cuts and tips I bought this light from Home Depot in Port Chester to replace a broken Lithonia T12 unit which was about 10 years old. The T12 was OK but the ballast broke and to my dismay the Instant start T12 ballast is no longer sold at Home Depot (US law is phasing the T12 units out). So I bought this T8 as a replacement unit. The nice thing about it is that the main piece, the 8 foot U channel main casing is identical between the T12 and T8 Lithonia units. So I did not have to unscrew this component from my ceiling. All that was required was to replace (1) the ballast for the t8 unit, and (2) some of the metal brackets which are *COMPATIBLE* with the T12 unit holes and cut outs lined up exactly. I think Lithonia has the identical U channel main case in both products. The U-channel is a bit flimsy but this works in your favour when it comes to swaping out the brackets. The metal being flimsy is also flexible, a gentle flex and the old brackets pop out and you can pop the new ones in. To make this process a bit easier I recommend cheap pair of gloves, the $US 5 kind at Home depot for gardening work well. They are thick and clumsy but that is what you need. The edges of the metal are sharp, but with the thick gloves it is easy to pop out and replace the brackets. The other thing you need are a pair of safety googles. The cheap $US 3 kind with the elastic strap work well available at home depot. Lithonia have made the ballast and wiring also simpler from earlier production units. The have wired up the connectors and on purpose cut the some lengths of the wire short. This forces you to place the connectors in the right places because the wires only reach so far. In my case yellow leads to the far ends, and the red and blue wires in the center. The White goes to Neutral and the Black to Live of your hose power supply. The earth (bare copper) should be connected to a screw inserted into the main U channel case to earth the unit. There is a more expensive unit also sot at Home Depot for $US 59.47 also T8. As fas as I can tell this is a High Output Ballast unit which can take 40 W (as opposed to the 32 watt) tubes. I think the 40 W tubes are special order only, so to get the extra Ummph in light you need the tubes to go with them. Another important reason to consider the more expensive unit is I think it is a rapid start unit which is designed for lower temperatures. So if your location is cold, e.g. car garage, then maybe the more expensive unit would work better there. The unit works well and is quite a bit brigther than the old T12 unit while using the same about of power. 4 x 32 W vs. 2 x 75 W (approx)

Rated 5 out of 5 by from GOOD LIGHT I AM A ELECTRICAL CONTRACTOR. THIS PRODUCT IS GREAT FOR THE PRICE. GREAT LIGHT OUTPUT.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great solution for garage lighting Installed 3 of these lights in an unheated garage, fitted them with GE Cool White Premium Cool White (model 73899 purchased at a HD competitor) bulbs and controlled them using a Lutron Maestro Occupancy Sensor Switch. Very pleased with the results; instant on, good color rendering (bulb choice), quiet ballasts. Assembling the pieces (sockets, end cap, covers) was a bit of work but manageable and the sheet metal flexs a lot until it is mounted (typical). I second another reviewer's comment that installing the retaining clip for the cover was a real challenge. Bottom line: I'd buy more and recommend the product to others. Everything worked out of the box, no missing or broken parts.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Limited Ballast Life As did a number of others, I installed a number of these into a 3-car garage shop. In fact, I installed 7 of them in tandem runs of two or three in a line. The result was almost-shadowless, even, and bright shop lighting. The downside? The ballasts. These fixtures are little more than a few feet of wire, some painted sheet metal and the ballasts. I've now had two of the ballasts fail. Mine is a hobby wood-working shop, so these haven't had years of full time, daily use. In fact, the two ballasts failed before I've had to replace a single one of the 28 T8 tubes filling these fixtures, about five years after installation. The ballasts are an unknown, off-brand built in Mexico. Replacing them isn't difficult, but will cost about twenty bucks a unit for a good GE ballast if you do it yourself. Since that's half the new price after only a few years of part-time use, the units aren't a long-term bargain. So, I got what I paid for. With the new and upgraded ballasts, I don't expect to have to touch them again. But I know that the rest of the ballasts will have to be replaced too, and that will add significantly to the original purchase cost.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great price for a 8 foot fixture Got these to replace old fixtures in church office that used 8' lamps. Much brighter than before. I found out you could remove any number of lamps and fixture would still operate, since the lamps are wired in parallel. You couldn't do that with the old fixtures. I called the manufacturer and was told this would not damage the fixture. Other reviews said the sheet-metal was lightweight but once installed, who cares? One warning-the first fixture I bought had missing parts and found out it had been returned by previous customer. Check the contents before you leave the store. All in all a pretty good deal if they hold up.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Impressive Works Great. Installed in my 2 car garage onto bare 24in. rafters. Plenty of light (Instant ON). I used 4 cool white T-5 bulbs. Light weight and easy to install. I used help from a second person. Must be hard wired to a switch. Great for the price. I would have paid extra for an optional deflector.
