Customer Questions & Answers

I have an outside basin with a grinder pump which has just died. Can this be used instead of replacing with a grinder pump?

It's residential, two baths, level yard, approximately 30 feet from pump basin to street. The grinder pumps recommended to me are close to $2000 just for the pump. Way out of my ability to buy right now. I don't even care if it has a short life, as long as it will pump.

You have given me some limited information, so I am not able to give you a definitive answer. So for now I will offer you my impressions and if you would like to discuss it more please feel free to give me a call. A "grinder pump" is the most aggressive from of sewage pump. Usually when a grinder is used it tells me the total system was most likely designed, calculated and specified by an engineer to meet very specific requirements. For example when you are pumping into a pressurized municipal forced sewer main. The pumps need to have very specific performance to remove the waste and match the loads of the system they are entering. In these situations you need to match the design parameters if it is going to work. Your are looking to change one component of the system so the new component may need to mach the system. Now your system may not be that elaborate. I just can't say. But experience tells me if someone went to the expense of utilizing grinders there was most likely a reason and you may want to understand why, before you go to a relatively weaker component. I say that not because the new component will have a shorter life, but because if the performance is not there it may cause a much more expensive problem to occur. Chris 978 651 3301

what size outlet

Asked by: catfish1
The listing on HomeDepot.com says " 2 in. FNPT " This may be a little confusing to the lay person. What that means is 2" female national pipe thread. So it would have a two inch threaded connection that you would screw into. Most installers reduce this discharge to inch and a half or inch and a quarter. This increases the speed at which the water moves through the discharge pipe. Kind of like when you put your thumb over the end of a hose.

Was going to by a cheaper one, spent an extra $200 on this one and it was well worth it. Super easy to hook up, never hooked one up before and total time was about 45 minutes with taking the old one out. At first didn't think I set it up right, then realized that's how quite it is. You will not even hear this one running. I've only had it for about a month and couldn't be happier, we will see in time how long it last, that's why only 4 stars.
