Customer Questions & Answers

Can this product be used for stringers and decking in a boat?

Asked by: AllVol
The PL Premium Polyurethane Construction Adhesive is designed for Glued Floor Systems and does require the use of mechanical fasteners. The product data and instructions do not speak to its use in the marine industry as described. It would not be recommended in situations where water submersion may occur and would not be recommend in important structural joints. This adhesive as packaged is not classified as a structural adhesive but rather semi-structural. It might be possible to use the product in your project but understand the user assumes the risk and responsibility with respect to boat construction or repair.

I have used it to install a new laminate water resistant floor on my bathroom because the glue that came with the laminate was not sticking to the floor. It worked perfectly, so for your flooring project will work.

Paintable, or not? Fill osb floor gaps?

The "Product Overview" indicates this product is paintable; however, the "Specification 'Details'" indicate it is not. Which is correct? Also, can this be used to fill in gaps on an osb floor where boards don't meet -- I'm not referring to the perimeter? I bought a "gathering structure" on a lake in Michigan. It's insulated and has osb covering the walls and the upstairs floor. My intention is to use the upstairs to house overnight guests. Therefore, I want to spruce up the appearance by painting the walls and floor. It will only be cooled as needed. The upstairs is not heated during the winter, although the main floor is heated to about 62 degrees.
Asked by: derua
Do not use this as a filler as it is an adhesive and is meant to shrink as it cures for bonding.

How much heat can it withstand? Can it be used for adhesive on firepits?

Asked by: MD
No, I won't use this product in the heat. Look for another one resistant to the heat.

Loctite makes many Polyurethane Construction Adhesives, the most common 3x and a faster grabbing 8x. If you want more than a minute or two of working time, use the 3x. If on the other hand you can correctly align the two surfaces quickly the 8x may make more sense. Both provide extremely strong bonds. Most recently, I used the 3X to bound Hickory retreads to my pine stair treads. The 3x provided ample time to make adjustments so that the retread pieces fit flush to the risers and equidistant from the stringers - about 1/32" play on each side. I also used the 3x like a "caulk" to fill the gaps between the original toe boards and treads and was able to eliminate all the squeaks!

I used it to bond some bricks to a piece of wood shelving to create a small step just off our patio deck. It hold as good or better than the other products. I got it specifically because it said it would hold on masonry. But if this is not the lazy-man's step, I don't know what is. Super easy to work with. Bonds like no other. And fast drying! The adhesive comes out like a goo and dries quickly. I was done in three minutes!

I previously tried Loctite Power Grab Express Heavy Duty Construction and was very disappointed. By comparison, PL Premium flows very smoothly and readily adheres to the surface and fully distributes evenly when clamped, whereas Power Grab does not flow smoothly and often lifts from the surface and resists even spreading when clamped. I clamped and nailed with both products and allowed to cure for 24 hours. Upon cutting the wood, the halves secured with Power Grab would separate which was very disappointing, whereas the PL Premium cut pieces remained as one. In both cases I was careful to match the curvature of the boards. The PL Premium 3x is a superior product. I recently noticed a PL Premium 8x which I will try on my next project. Assigned a 4 rating because I do not have long term results.

I needed more for another project, after describing it to the HD associate, she took me right to the item. I used it to repair a loose hanging shingle, and also repaired both of my well worn work boots. The soles were separating from the boot. Squeezed some adhesive into the gap, clamped it with a couple HD clamps, and they are still good for back yard work.

I used it in conjunction with a mechanical anchors to secure a handrail between to walls and the top of iron balusters to the handrail itself. Its like one solid piece now and not going anywhere. Plus its paint-able. Very pleased! Word of advice, practice with the product first. It was my initial time using the product, so I found it unwieldy at first. It seems to expand after application, so I had to perform quick cleanup. Luckily I had latex gloves on and was able to wipe away the excesses as it expanded onto a rag. After I accounted for this characteristic I adjusted my application accordingly and no more issue. I've used a sister product from Loctite outside for masonry and concrete blocks and it too has impressed me with its strength and durability. I fully trust these construction type adhesives from Loctite.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Load bearing beam We used the Loctite adhesive on a critical load bearing beam to remove a wall to open up our living / dinning room area. We needed a glue that adhered to both wood and steel. The heavy beam consisted of 3 ea. 2 x 8 x 10 feet wood members and 2 ea 3/8 x 7 x 10 feet steel plates sandwiched in between. The DIY beam has been in place for a couple of weeks, so I believe the project was successful.

I used this to adhere wood to concrete and I found it to be easy to work with and set up fairly quick. I was using the liquid nails and found it took a while to set up and didn't seem near as strong compared to this stuff. This is a little more expensive, but worth the price in my opinion.
