Is this product suitable for covering nails going thru metal flashing? I'm scraping off the old dry caulking first. Also, the product "skins" within 24 hours. Not sure what this means? If products has had 24 hrs to "dry" before rain, is this suitable?

Answer:
Hi Fred-
Product should work well with only a few hours dry time before rain exposure. The curing reaction is activated by water vapor, so liquid water will not inhibit the cure (but it won't speed it up, either). Full strength will still take several days.

Answer:
Yes, this product is suitable to cover nails. Skinning is the term given to the caulking after the outside has had time to harden but the inside of the caulking is still soft. It is recommended to let the product fully dry before receiving any rain.

Will this product work to fill holes in roof left behind from an old satellite dish? If so, should you use anything else such as felt paper with product? It is an asphalt shingle roof - 12 years old.

Answer:
If you can gently lift the shingle and dab a healthy amount underneith but not so much the the shingle will not push down flat. If anything pushes out through the hole then spread it out to seal the top. Otherwise add a little more on the top and spread out beyond the screw hole.

Answer:
It should be fine, as long as you don't need the sealant to be really strong- e.g. to hold a pipe in place. Sealant may still be sticky, but the seal will be good, and water exposure will accelerate the cure.

CUSTOMER REVIEWS

Rated 4.5 out of 5 by 6 reviewers.
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Don't use it over another sealant! I didn't get a chance to use this product after reading the Loctite website instructions from the manufacturer.I was planning to use on a crack that already had been chalked, tarred and/or sealed over the years. Loctite says: Not Recommended For Contact with oil-based caulking compounds, butyl caulking compounds and silicone sealants (uncured and cured). Surfaces must be structurally sound, dry, clean, free of dirt, moisture, loose particles, oil, grease, asphalt, tar, paint, wax, rust, waterproofing, curing and painting and compound. I would like to try this product but other than new installs, I don't see how it can be used over existing materials August 4, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Use it for everything. Been using this product for years here in Colorado and have just recommended it to some friends who live outside of Woodstock,VT. Not only do I use it for roofs but customs built showers to seal the HardieBacker seams, plumbing issues, calking the fins on new window installs, sealing cracks in foundations and so on. My elevation in Colorado is 7K' and the sun is pretty brutal on building materials. Unlike silicone you will not be able to rip this off only after a year and I never had it leak. Can't think of anything it doesn't stick to yet although I've wanted to try it on Tyvek. The only thing you need to be aware of is that it takes twenty-four hours to set up so it can be a little messy. Rather than try and smooth things out if I add too much I wait until it dries hard and then trim off the excess. If you use a battery calk gun watch your speed as I have blown apart the tubes from the pressure. August 13, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Best Sealant I have ever used- easy to use and it sticks like crazy! Easy to use and it sticks like crazy! The 1st time I used it I goofed and didn't clean up right away- BIG MISTAKE! The 2nd time I read the directions and used mineral spirits and the sealant came off everything I had gotten it on (even clothing) without much effort! Of course, washing with a good hand soap is paramount afterwards. May 12, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by I'm never without this stuff I have used this for years for construction projects, inventing, repair, and prototype fabrication. It is the sealant I always wanted silicone to be: tough, adhesive, rubbery, and gap filling. I always have a tube in the shop. I use it for structural adhesive as often as for sealant. As an adhesive, the initial grab is poor, so you have to keep things in place. I've also used it for automotive repairs, when I didn't need the high grab of a contact cement. Full disclosure- I haven't used this on construction projects very much, so I can't testify about longevity, sun resistance etc. But it's paintable, and it seems like it would do a great job. My cautions are really the flip side of what I like about it. This has lots of working time, and is easy to handle. For the first day, however, it remains sticky, and is pretty weak. Don't be fooled. The strength builds up over time- it becomes very strong, tenacious, and flexible. Curing is triggered by exposure to water vapor, so a slightly moist environment speeds it up some- but thick sections may take days to reach full strength. It sticks to everything, except waxy plastics like PE, PP. But- that stickiness and easy texture makes it easy to get on your to your clothes, shop bench etc.. Be thoughtful and work slowly. Nitrile gloves are a good idea- unless you like black, sticky fingers. I apply it to small projects with popsicle sticks or bamboo skewers, work over papers and try not to touch it. Some folks are sensitive to Urethane- it has never bothered me. It foams up slightly- maybe 10%, which is usually a great thing for filling in gaps, but can leave your brilliant caulk gun artistry a little bumpy. For sealing, it is just bulletproof. Cleanup with mineral spirits seems odd- it never worked at all for me. I found that 91% isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol seems to work much better, and can even be used for smoothing the surface of the uncured sealant. Clean up right away- otherwise no solvent works. Trim after it loses tackiness, but before it gets to full cure. Hint for re-using the tube after a small job: After the first job with a new tube, cut the tube tip off removing the pointy end altogether. Then let some sealant ooze out, maybe 3/8" past the end of the tube. That oozed sealant will cure into a tough and flexible handle. If you need more sealant later, pull the sealant handle slowly. You can usually get a plug of cured sealant out of the nozzle, even a few weeks later. That opens the tube for re-use. BTW, their PL urethane construction adhesive is also one of my favorites, a must-have, for rigid joints and good gap filling with odd material. July 4, 2015
