Questions & Answers

Can I plug this into a house 110

Asked by: Coop
Yes. It will weld up to 100 amps on an ordinary 110v circuit, which is good for 3/32-inch rod, and some 1/8-inch rod.

What metal thickness can this weld up to?
Asked by: Jonny
Any if you're willing to take the time and make multiple passes. However, the basic rule of thumb for beginners is that you take the output amperage in decimal inches. 1/8-inch is 0.125-inch, and would take about 125 amps to weld with 1/8-inch rod. Your base metal should be about as thick as the rod for full penetration (unless you chamfer the edges to be joined), so 1/8-inch thick metal, or a little thicker (0.140-inch) can be welded in one pass on 220v. This unit puts out about 100 amps on 110v, so in that case, about 1/10-inch can be welded in one pass. Though if you have a simple butt-joint and you chamfer the edges, AND weld both sides of the joint, you could in theory almost double the thickness to about 1/4-inch.

as per the comment section, why can this welder NOT weld aluminum?

as per the comment section, why can this welder NOT weld aluminum?
Asked by: steve
Because it lacks AC output. This welder only supplies DC output. AC output is required for welding metals that form an oxide crust when heated (aluminum, titanium, etc). The effect is known as 'cleaning action', which blasts away the oxide layer as it forms, allowing the filler metal to join the base metal securely. Without the cleaning action of AC, that oxide layer will form between the base metal and the filler metal, keeping the weld from reaching full strength.

Asked by: sga
Go deep into the YouTube interwebs, it is possible to weld aluminum with D.C. You just need to buy helium gas and practice a lot.

140 Amp TIG/Stick DC IGBT Inverter Welder with Auto Adaptive Hot Start (Lift Start) for TIG, Dual Voltage 110/220V is rated 4.0 out of 5 by 7.

I've been looking for a small welder for a while now and finally decided on the LOTOS 140 Amp DC TIG/Stick Welder. The welder comes in a handy plastic suite case, which is actually large enough to hold the welder with all accessories. It is light weight (for a welder) and with a carrying handle and shoulder strap it is truly portable. I have only tested the stick welding so far as I don't have an Argon bottle yet, which is essential for TIG welding. Stick welding the welder has enough power, even running at 115V. I like the welder, even though the welding shield is a joke.

And the fake blue button on the tig torch waisted my time trying to find out what it does. After being told by Lotos support it does nothing I took the thing apart and they are right. Why does it need a fake button?

Pros: - Does a decent job of welding either stick (SMAW) or TIG (GTAW) within the listed ranges. (Have only tried 110V so far. Do not yet have access to 220V in my garage.) - Lightweight and easy to carry. Comes with a case that holds all the cables and accessories if you take the time to coil them up neatly. - Comes with everything you need to get started on SMAW except for consumables (rods/sticks) - Comes with almost everything you need to get started on GTAW except for consumables (rods), gas (argon, etc) AND a flow regulator! (Accessories kit comes with one 1/16th-inch tungsten.) Cons: - Does NOT have lift start!!!!!! The TIG circuit is always live at full power. It does not have the micro-current that switches to full current after you lift. This is a scratch-start unit! - Cheap cooling fan. If you attempt to reposition the unit while it is on, you're going to hear the fan scrape a bit as you rotate the unit even if you rotate it slowly. - Does not come with a flow regulator, only a hose barb. - Hose barb does not come with a nut! So, odds are you're just going to throw it out unless you're lucky enough to find a matching nut on a regulator, otherwise you'll be buying a threaded barb from plumbing. - Included welding shield/mask is only good for stick as you need both hands free for TIG. - Included chipping hammer/brush combo has a blunt point, making it pretty much useless for tight corners. Anyone who buys this is already going to be picking up gloves, and could just as easily pick up a chipping hammer and helmet at the same time, so it would nice to see the supplier drop the hand-held mask and chipping hammer in favor of a flow regulator, which is harder to acquire than the mask/helmet and chipping hammer.

I can't say enough great things about this amazing welder, it was everything I needed and wanted, plus more. Everthing including the welder is included in a compact carrying case, everything ready to do the work I wanted. its well made and many pieces included, Strong enough to tackle the repairs needed , it can be carried to the project, rather than having to haul large items to my work shop, which is an A+ for me.

It is a Miller suitcase for 300 bucks. It will not do TIG aluminum, but anything else it will. I primarily bought this to replace an old AC craftsman stick welder. It always had trouble starting the arc. This one does not, Start is very easy, even at "soft " settings. It strikes right up and welds nicely. I also have a Lotos wire welder and a LPD 5000 plasma cutter. I think that this is the hottest hobby setup you can possibly get. Hang the sholder strap over your shoulder plug into 110 and weld. I only have used it on 220, so I don't know how she welds on 110. I do know that the plasma cutter works lots better on 220. But 110Volt will work in a pinch.
