Customer Questions & Answers

My ceiling height is 7'-7", can I set the unit 2" higher up in the opening?

My ceiling height is 7'-7". Can I install the ladder unit 2" higher up in the rough opening then add 2" of rigid insulation & a 1/8" luan cover to make it flush with the ceiling? This will increase the R value, but will the closers be able to handle the additional weight and pull the door shut tight?
Asked by: TMC
I put a set of these steps into my house with a 7'6" ceiling height. I simply cut more off the lower set of stairs. Worked fine.

will this ladder work for a ceiling height of 7 feet 6 inches?

If not could you recommend one that is insulated and rated for 350 lbs with a ceiling height of 7 feet 6 inches and opening 25.5 X 54?
Asked by: chris
There is a smaller, i.e., shorter one, which might work better for you. The smallest height measurement for this one is 7 ft. 9 in.

I purchased this unit and within a year the gas cylinders had failed. It's been a challenge to find replacements or someone to fix. Will changing out to springs work? If so, what kind and how? Thx.
Asked by: Houli
Thanks for the previous answer - I should have been a bit more clear in what the really issue is. The stairs will not stay up/retract. I can push them up with a broom stick but they come crashing down. I believe the gas cylinders are the parts that hold the retracted unit up into the attic and in alignment with the garage ceiling. Correct? And if everything comes pre-assembled (mostly w/ rivets) there are not much adjustments that can be made. After much searching I was able to order replacements from a distributor at almost 1/2 the cost of a whole new stair system. Are there any safety issues with installing new gas cylinders? Thanks in advance.

Would have been great, but a few of the rivets that connect the ladder to the hinge didn't look quite right so I put a few more nails through those spots for extra support. I also bought some weather seal stripping, to air seal the edges where the door meets the frame, because it slammed a bit louder than I liked, and could feel a slight air movement. I just used some 3M half inch wide, quarter inch thick, 10 feet long air tight sealing, and cut strips to size.

Replaced an old, rickety wooden pull down with the aluminum Werner attic ladder. It was quite solid but once you went up the ladder to where it was backed by the door, there was no room for your feet! The higher you went up the ladder the more unsteady you got. Even my wife had to turn her feet sideways. Switched to the Louisville because there is more room for your foot on the ladder as you get to the part faced by the door. The ladder itself is fine but not as solid as the Werner. The pull down mechanism operates well.

The actual "install" time was about 60min. Installation was straight forward. The weight of the ladder made this easier. The only downside is the dimensioning. The opening is supposed to be 25.5" x 54'. This is the exact measurement of my opening. When I finished the install I had over a 1/2" gap on both sides. Not what I wanted and caused me extra time on the job to fix. My recommendation would be to measure your opening and add a 54" by 3" by 1/2"shim (or what ever the difference is from ladder to the opening) before installing. This will help a lot with the lag bolts when securing the ladder and reattaching any moulding around the door. I really liked the height adjustment for the legs. Lots of holes in both the ladder and adjustment legs to match just about any height.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Louisville Elite Aluminum Attic Ladder--a better attic ladder The Louisville Elite aluminum attic ladder is a better attic ladder than the old, springs-and-wood version. The installation guide could be better, but what guide is NOT in need of improvement? We have used this ladder to scamper up and down into our attic for a couple of weeks now, and I recommend it as an improvement to anyone with an old attic ladder with bent supports. I also recommend placing the temporary anchors on the inside of the frame instead of the outside if you want to easilty remove them afterwards (hence "temporary").

Bought these aluminum steps with pneumatic cylinders to replace my noisy spring loaded wood steps. They are much quieter but feel very unstable. They flex much more than the wood steps. Also, paid more for the insulated steps. The insulation is a joke. The pieces are cut wrong and don't fit. They are also warped and would need to be glued in if I was keeping them. I'll replace them with decent insulation.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Nice Product. Solid Features I purchased & installed this product during the past weekend. I was very pleased with the sturdy features, namely the aluminum ladder and the piston pressure closure devices. Way better then the old spring closes that I had. Because I have an older home and the ceiling to floor measurement was a bit less then the 7' 9" normal height, I had to shorten the ladder length by another 1 - 1 1/2 inch or so before I could attach the adjustable feet. A hacksaw and a bit of measuring and cutting did the trick. I only needed a second person to help lift the unit into place and secure the temporary straps. The rest I was able to do myself. Solid product. Good value.

I was surprised how much of the bottom section that had to be cut for an eight foot height ceiling. Luckily I have the tools to make it work like a power Saale, drill, files, etc.

For a product rated at 350 lbs, it sure feels unsteady. Also, the insulation slides around and will get to one side and not allow the door to close.
