I bought this combination last year, and didn't use it for more than an hour. The unit works fine for splitting the first time I hit the wedge the head split. I have tried to contact the company, but have had no luck.

While this maul performs adequately, you cannot use it as a wedge once you've struck it into a log. I used it in this way and the steel around the handle cracked which came as a bit of surprise. Since this is a splitting maul priced at the top of the line, I'd have expected it to be able to stand up to being struck by a sledge hammer.

Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Bob Poor Quality, Doesn't Last, Shattered Head.
This isn't much better than a hatchet. I had similar design splitting maul that worked excellent. I thought this might be a suitable replacement, boy was I wrong! If you're splitting 4" logs it will probably work fine, anything more is going to cause problems. The head is to light to easily split normal 12"+ logs, and if you use the wedge, it will shatter the the splitting maul. Now I'm left with a useless plastic handle. Do yourself some good and buy a steel handle and wedge splitting maul that will last a lifetime. That's what I'm buying next.

The rubber shock cuff at the neck peeled off less than a cord into my splitting. Just a few overstrikes or clear thru strikes and the wood starts to work on the collar. I attempted to return the product and upgrade to the Fiskar splitting axe but it is not available in my local store. I imagine the replacement of the same make will last about a cord before I bring it back too. Was disappointed as this tool otherwise performed well but it just doesn't stand up to the abuse it was produced to face.

I used this ax over the summer of '14. I split roughly 4 cords of green wood before the epoxy started breaking apart. The ax completely failed by the end of the 5th cord with the handle completely disconnecting from the head. I did like the shape of the head as it discouraged the ax getting stuck in logs, however the poor quality makes this a light duty ax ONLY. This summer, I'll be using my new Fiskars - hopefully I'll be able to write a glowing review for them.

Ordered online, took it out of the box and right away I could see the head wasn't just dull it was actually quite thick with a flattened blunt edge. Confirmed my worry when I tested it out and the thing only drove about 3 inches into the wood with a full mighty swing, so now I'll need to spend additional money to sharpen it. Not going to return it just yet, but if sharpening doesn't work then back it goes.

Had it for two weeks it worked really good cutting. When it stuck I used it as a wedge. I suggest that you don't follow my lead. The back of the axe cracked. Never had that problem in the good old days. I used the wedge once, it drove in like a nail and stayed there.
Good axe. Would be using it for a long time if I treated it better.
Home Depot refunded my money without question.
