Can't beat the price but it needs work. edge is too thick and dull and the wedge is too wide to enter the wood easily. Grind a sharper angle and edge but not much can be done about the width. I know this because I have one that's exactly the same angle, sharp and half the width and it's great even for elm except that the split needs to be completed with the maul because it's only 2/3 as long.

Nicely made, forged wedge. Nice finish, and little mushrooming from sledgehammer blows. A great adjunct to a splitting maul, especially for hand splitting gnarled hardwoods, like branch crotches, etc. Good idea to always use in pairs (one to get stuck, and one to get the other one out) and the price makes this very affordable. Main change I think that is needed is to have the tips reshaped. I use old wedges inherited from my father which have a profile much like an axe with a steady taper all the way to the point. The result is that they stay in a round with a few taps so you can then give them a full stroke and they don't fly out. These wedges need the same treatment because the two step taper makes the tips too steeply tapered (more like a splitting maul) and the result is that they are hard to start, especially holding the sledgehammer in one hand and the wedge with the other Still a nice product and I suspect nice and durable. Would recommend on price and quality.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from It's a wedge... ...you hit it ... it splits the log. The steel isn't all that hard, so there will be some mushrooming, and chipping on errant shots. Unfortunately, they don't forge these things like they used to, and even then, older stuff has the same problems (just later on than these). For the price, I would challenge you to do better elsewhere.
