LED Lamp & Dimmer compatibility

I am planning to replace a number of incandescent BR30 lamps in my existing recessed cans with Osram LED/LD6/900/830/FL120/FL retrofit ULTRA Disk retrofit lamps. I use Lutron Maestro Dimmers everywhere but mine won't work properly with these lamps. I note that the new Maestro dimmers claim to be compatible with LED lamps. Some circuits will have just two LED lamps for a total of 26 W and others will have 6 lamps for a total of 78 W. Will these dimmers work in my application?
Asked by: lampguy
The Lutron website has an excellent online tool for matching dimmer type with bulb type. It's at http://www.lutron.com/en-US/Pages/LEDCompatibilityTool/Compatibility.aspx.

Does this switch an illumination light in it that is present when the switch is turned off?
Asked by: unhappy
The green LEDs on the left side of the switch have a very faint glow to them when the switch is off. Is it enough for a person to find in the dark? Perhaps, depends on the person. If you do not want the lights to be on it's possible to disable them through the special "advanced" programming mode on the dimmer. See the instructions on the Lutron website for the dimmer for advanced programming. You won't find it in the manual included with the dimmer, but it can be done.

Can the LED light indicator on the actual light switch be shut off (for use in a bedroom) so that the light switch is completely dark?

Example: I have looked at the manual and can't figure out what I did wrong.
Asked by: Diyguy
YES, they can. You need to lookup the "advanced" programming instructions on the Lutron website for this dimmer. It's possible to enter an advanced programming mode and disable the green LED lights on the switch if you so choose. There's actually a whole lot more you can program this switch to do. Shame Lutron didn't bother to ship it with the switch. The other answers are incorrect.

Does installing dimmer reduce electricity consumption?

I have 5 LED 21 W bulbs (150 W equivalent) in kitchen and would like to install dimmer so that I can increase or decrease the amount of light. At the same time I want to understand if using dimmer at lower setting will reduce overall electricity consumption compared to using it at full setting,
Asked by: Bob
Yes. Of course LEDs don't much energy to begin with. The significant difference in energy use is with incandescent or halogen bulbs and dimming also results in longer life for those two types of bulbs.

On brightest setting can only get 84% of input voltage going to the light. I would expect a dimmer to drop a couple of volts but I measured a 20 volt drop. I tested after using the programming mode to restore the factory defaults so I'm fairly certain the dimmer is set correctly. I called Lutron technical support and they said that the observed voltage drop is expected. I am disappointed with the lower light output of my fixture. Also, the dimmer needs a current to run the electronics so the dimmer leaks some current which prevents the light from ever turning off completely. I will be looking for another dimmer.

I decided to install this dimmer (very expensive) on one of the switches which the idea that I could dim the light from this switch, and the other switch just turn the light on or off without controlling the dimmer function. As long as the other switch is in the on position, I can use this dimmer switch, however if I shut the light from the other switch, I can not use this dimmer switch. I called my electrician, and he checked the color coding of the screws, and said this switch is suppose to work in conjunction with a same kind "mother switch). It is too late for me to return since I threw away the packaging so I decided to use keeping the other switch always on. THE PACKAGING SHOULD BE EXPLAINING THIS

The instructions were non existing and the home depot sales associates were clueless. I was instructed to by 3 of these for multi-location! In actuality I only needed 1 as you need the accessory switches and 1 of these master controllers.. Now I am stuck with 2 switches that I didn't need. I figured it Out when I went to the Lutron website and watched there installation video. Since Home depot didn't stock the accessory switches I had to order them online and will see how the installation proceeds!

This Dimmer worked well, in as much as it allowed a standard switch to easily interface with it rather than requiring a second dimmer to be installed, though if needed, a second dimmer is available.. On a side note, the dimmer did not come with the advanced programming instructions, just the basics. If you purchase this, go online and download the paperwork for the advance programming options. They were easy to find, and added a lot to the usability of the dimmer.

The switch is attractive with a sophisticated high tech look It also offers smooth automatic brightening and dimming when the switch is touched. However, I purchased this switch as a replacement for one of 4 Lutron switches I purchased one year ago. Mechanical switches rarely break and cost little. These Lutron switches cost a good bit more. I am disappointed that it had to be replaced so quickly.
