how to eliminate buzzing sound

I have 6 recessed cans in my ceiling which take 50W MR 16 12V bulbs. I had halogen in there and I needed to replace a few. I decided to go with the Utilitech 8.5-Watt (50W Equivalent MR 16 G5.3 base) bulbs. I dropped the money for 6 new dimmable LED bulbs, put them in and the hum/buzz was almost ear piercing. I went out and purchased a new Lutron Maestro 150-watt 3 way CFL-LED Dimmer, put that in and still had buzzing. Although it was not as loud, it's still too obnoxious to have the lights on and sit in that room. With $16/bulb and $30/dimmer, this is a pricey problem to have right now and not be able to turn my lights on. any help?
Asked by: Rob
You have a transformer or driver of some sort between the 120 volt supply and the bulbs you describe. I have not used a 120 volt dimmer in such an application nor can I imagine it working properly. You need a dimmer or driver and dimmer combo recommended by the bulb manufacturer. They will probably ask what transformer you have in the circuit now to get you from 120v down to 12v. What you are describing is possibly unsafe as well as noisy.

Does this work in a 4-way circuit with regular switches? If it is compatible, do lights come on slowly when a regular switch in circuit is turned on?

Looking at the manual, it should work. But I'd like to confirm before buying.
Asked by: Nickonym
Unfortunately no, this product will work in a three way with mechanical switches but once it reaches a four way, you must replace all of the other switches with it's companion product which is the MA-R.

These are the same lights I am buying. I just called Lutron Tech support and they told me to buy the Diva model of dimmers not the maestro.

Can the second switching location be a regular 3 way switch or does it need to be a particular type 3 way dimmer

Asked by: Larry
It works with a companion dimmer OR a standard 3-way switch. So its single pole, 3-way. or multi-location.

Can the LED light indicator on the actual light switch be shut off (for use in a bedroom) so that the light switch is completely dark?

Example: I have looked at the manual and can't figure out what I did wrong.
Asked by: Diyguy
Technically no but yes there is a way to do it. So you cannot do it with programming of the switch. But if you take the switch slightly apart the you can remove the clear plastic piece that goes over the LED's extending them to the above cover and place a clean white piece of tape over them. And voila all done and the LED will not shine for an bedroom or such.

Maestro 150-Watt Single-Pole/3-Way/Multi-Location Digital CFL-LED Dimmer - Palladium is rated 4.2 out of 5 by 77.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from One of the best dimmers The Maestro dimmer is one of the best most versatile dimmer switches I've ever used , it can be used as a standalone dimmer or as a three-way dimmer with one ordinary three-way switch at the other end so you don't have to purchase a special companion Dimmer

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Great when it works! There really isn't anything to compare to these switches - the soft dimming on and off features are great, and the true multi-location design allows you to actually control the brightness of the lights from multiple switches. However, I have purchased maybe 8 of these over time and twice I have received one that just flat out didn't work. One of them immediately snap-crackle-popped when I flipped the breaker, and the most recent one just did nothing. Fortunately my local HD store is only a few minutes away and always has plenty in stock. Outside of the random failures, I love these switches. They certainly aren't cheap, but they do look and function nice.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Sexiest light switch I've ever owned The butter smooth dimming from off to on and on to off is hard to hate, and the basic functions are so intuitive; you'll know how to use it almost immediately. The only downside this that it isn't 100% graunteed to work with all LED lights that are NOT listed on the compatibility list, so I would suggest keeping your receipt and packaging for a few days after install/use. Beyond that I would replace all the switches in my house with this one.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from bye-bye old rocker switches... After our electrician replaced our old T12 fluorescent bulbs that were providing indirect lighting from our planter shelves on both sides of our hallway entrance with LED tube lights, he then installed these digital LED dimmer switches which now allow us to have the indirect lighting as dim or as bright as we like. They (we bought two) work great...

We had one before and loved it so much that when there was a power surge from a transformer that destroyed the switch, we replaced it with the same item. The previous switch was 8 years old. It provides the light we require and when we leave the room, the slow dimming to turning off is much appreciated.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Failed within 1 week. Had to special order this item to get it in brown. I installed it as a 3-way dimmer switch which required some trial and error before the wires were connected correctly. The switch worked fine for about 1 week before it failed. Will return it to Home Depot in the hopes that it is an isolated problem with this one device.
