Product Overview

Let Lutron's Maestro Occupancy Sensor switch turn the lights or fan on and off for you. It's a simple, easy, and low cost way to save energy and add automation to your home. Can this be used in an exterior application? If not please recommend an exterior 3-way motion sensor switch.

Asked by: Chas
This product is not rated to be used in an outdoor application and at this time, Lutron does not manufacture an outdoor rated motion sensor switch.

Customer Reviews

Maestro 5 Amp Single-Pole/3-Way Motion Sensor Switch with Wallplate, White is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 19.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Comes In Very Handy While it is somewhat expensive, this is exactly the product we needed and really looks great in the prominent location we have it installed. Our garage is attached to the house through our laundry/mud room, which is an area often passed through or briefly used, but one which requires bright light through its single overhead light. At least 90% of the time this light was left on because our hands are full carrying kids to the car or baskets of laundry to and from the washer and dryer any time we enter or leave this area. And I cant count the number of times I bumped into something because my hands were too full to even turn on the light. Both the problem of turning on the light and keeping the light from being left on are solved by this single product, which took less than half an hour to install, even with only a little experience with wiring electrical outlets and switches. The installed switch looks great, still allows the secondary switch by the garage door to work, and ensures this frequently-traversed part of our house will never be unlit or wasting electricity with a light left on. Even though it is installed on a wall at a 45 degree angle away from the door to the kitchen, the motion detector still turns the light on by the time you are just a few inches through the doorway.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Helping Hand I installed this in my garage because I'm often carrying out, or carrying in, something that requires both hands. It's very responsive, and you can adjust it to your needs. Apparently it requires "training" for how much ambient light to allow before turning on, and that training is going about as well as a new puppy, but it's not so much trouble that it matters. My only problem is/was the other light switch. No matter which way I wire it, it won't work now. But that doesn't really matter to me because I have a switch that sensing occupancy and motion. Let the owners who come after me... some 40 years down the road... work it out. ;)

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Simple to install works great This is a very simple switch to install, I set mine up in the pantry, single switch configuration. When we have our hands full of stuff it is great to not have to find the light switch. Another great feature, once assembled, no screws as seen on the plate, nice clean look. Install was very simple, after turning off the breaker, remove the old switch, simply connect the black wires that were on the previous switch to this one, then connect the ground wires. It was nice to have the yellow jumper included in this one in case you needed it. Other switches I have worked with I needed the jumper and I did not have one. Although you can adjust some of the settings I found that the defaults worked just fine for me.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Easy to wire Lutron has come up with some great dimmers. This one is equipped to use for any kind of bulb as well as small fans. Its a great way to save energy as you replace incandescent bulbs with modern LEDs (though it can be used with any type of bulb, including mixed varieties). A great feature is that it can be set for intervals (manually) as well as being a motion sensor. If there is enough natural lighting in the room, it won't come on at all (unless you want it to); also it won't turn for for incident small movement. It wires easily and no ground is needed so even a beginner DIYer can do it. If you are not comfortable in self-install, it won't cost an arm and leg fto get a pro to do a 5 minute job. The manufacturer even includes the wall plate.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome 3 way light! Perfect maestro 5 amp single pole or 3 way light switch with built in motion sensor. This is the perfect solution for the constant worrying about leaving lights on. It was easy to install, can be switched in for any or most existing light switches and motion sensor is an added plus! Keep in mind, that there is some electrical work involved so be sure to turn off power to switch etc. and or use a tester to double check. If you need, an electrician could do this in no time! All in all a great switch!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Switch An idea that has finally come around ! Do you have a dark stairway ? Problem solved ! This switch is an asset when you go down stairs with hands full as it has a motion sensor that turns on the light. It's a 3way so you can use switch at bottom of stairs. There is also a manual mode to work it as a sensor picks up light in daytime when you don't need it ! If installed in a room it stays on as long as there is motion around, Only tool needed is a screwdriver !!! I highly recommend !!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from NICELELY DESIGNED AND FUNCTIONAL This Maestro occupancy sensor switch from LUTRON is a nicely designed and very functional. The switch with included Claro wall plate has a modern clean look and is a great switch to have in a laundry room, hallway, etc. It automatically turns lights on when enter room and its XCT Sensing Technology with 180 degree field of view ensures lights stay on when room is occupied and turns lights off after desired amount of time. This single pole/ 3- way switch works with all bulb types and also has a tap button to manually turn off lights in desired. I installed this motion sensor switch in my shed so I can enter with stuff in my hands without having to fiddle around to turn lights on. So far it has been working flawlessly and is a good improvement over other occupancy sensing switches I have used in the past.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome. Very functionally and reliable I am using this in harmony with a 3 way Maestro sensor with dimming capabilities. They are very easy to install when you follow the instructions. The angle of vision is good. You can adjust the sensitivity, The appearance is very clean and attractive, and they work without fail. This is the first sensor I have been pleased with. They are effective and without fail. I cannot say that about some previous sensors I had installed. I am very appreciative of this sensor.
