How do this 3-way switch interact with the mechanical switch?

When this is installed as a 3-way with a mechanical switch, does the sensor turn the mechanical switch off after a certain time without motion? I'm confused how the motion sensor interacts with the mechanical switch.
Asked by: Eroc
Must rewire 2nd 3 way switch per instructions from mfr. New switch will control all features. Second switch is now only pass through to occupancy switch but does function mechanically when required.

Can I use two of these switches to replace two existing 3-way switches and make use of motion sensor on either end? I have an L shaped hall-way that could use motion sensor trigger on both ends. Will that work, if yes, how do I wire them? Wiring diagram is not clear to me, sorry.

How to use two of these devices to act as an "automatic" 3-way switch?

I have a pair of long staircases connected by a landing in my home. Can I use two of these devices so that when I am at the top of the first staircase and begin to descend, the lights would automatically go on, and remain on (for at least several minutes) or until I pass the second device at the bottom of the second staircase at which point, the lights would go off? Of course, I'd also like it to work similarly when I would ascend the stairs. Would I need to also install two standard 3-way switches?

Maestro 5-Amp Single Pole/3-Way Occupancy Sensing Switch - Swamp Glass is rated 4.3 out of 5 by 78.
Rated 2 out of 5 by from DO NOT BUY Installation if done per instructions will not work. Instructions are out dated and diagrams pourly illustrated. When speaking with Lutron tech support they even stat that the instructions are not clearly written and do not accuratly illustrate how to properly wire switch. Nor do they say on the box or in instructions that YOU CAN NOT USE THE SENSORED SWITCH WITH A LIGHTED MECHANICAL SWITCH ON THE OTHER END DUE TO ITS NEED FOR BEING CONSTANTLY LIVE TO POWER LIGHT IN SWITCH. Lutron tech even said this is a big issue they jave to deal with being incorrect and only found in their support info not in product instructions.

Very sensitive and turns on lights even though it is partially blocked from view. The switch was used to control 8 4' flouresent fixtures in a locker room. This has really helped to control our utility costs and turn off the lights when the room is unoccupied. Highly recommend.

Great to have a light come on without looking for the switch. The moving garage doors activate the motion detector. The only drawback is you have to carefully read the instructions to program other than default settings. Easy to install

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Works well I put this switch in my garage and basement, the places where my kids always forget to shut off the lights. The switch works just fine, but the installation instructions were not the best. I finally figured out, but it took longer than it should.

I special ordered the gray model to better blend in with the gray PVC box and conduit I was using. It was worth the 5 business days wait. This switch is fully programmable to use as either a vacancy sensor or an occupancy sensor, with easy wiring hookups. Though it isn't mentioned anywhere in the literature, I mounted this in a ceiling looking down and it works flawlessly. Coupled with the new light I installed, it has made a dark area of the garage a great place to work, and I never have to find a switch to turn it on. I am considering purchasing more of these for other areas of the house.

Manufacturer should revise and clearly address both the features illustrated on the packaging and in the instruction sheet. Very confusing to use the settings to both turn on based on motion and when the device allows the fixture to remain on during specific hours. Neither I nor the HD electrical staff (long term employee) was unable to decipher the difference between this device and the one costing $5.00 less.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect for stairwell; mud room Used these in two locations where we often have our hands full and need light for safety. One was at the top of the basement stairs where trips to the laundry usually meant climbing down in the dark with full baskets and no free hand for the switch. This unit solved a real safety hazard. The other was the mud room where arms full of groceries create the same issue (minus stairs).

Installed this in a galley style utility room which is also a hallway to the garage. Step through either doorway and the light comes on. Especially nice to not have to fumble for a light switch with your hands full. Very cool.
