Customer Questions & Answers

can I also turn the lights off with my hand? No switch? Only sensor?

Asked by: Sam
This can be used without a switch.

The video indicates power comes on when motion is detected but the description doesn't confirm as much.

Asked by: TLC
This product is a vacancy only sensor and will not turn on when it senses motion. It will however turn off when it no longer senses motion in the room. The model number that would turn on with motion and off without motion would be the MS-OPS5M-BL.

Can I connect 4 fixtures 128W (4 T8 32W each = 128W) each for a total of 512W to this Switch

Can I connect 4 fixtures 128W (4 T8 32W each = 128W) each for a total of 512W to this Switch
Asked by: Buzzard
Hello Buzzard, I’m Chris from the Home Depot’s how-to Community. Thank you for your question. The installation instructions specify “Up to 600 Watt incandescent, halogen, electronic low voltage; 200 Watt magnetic low voltage; 150 Watt CFL/ LED, 2-Amp magnetic and electronic ballasts, 3-Amp fan” as suitable. Each of the fixtures you plan to install takes just over 1 amp each, so this switch could only handle one of them, not 4. I hope this helps, Chris. .

Can you connect the ground wire into the neutral when using one of these switches along with a standard switch in a 3-way configuration?

I have no ground in my switch boxes. I have used these just by themselves and wired the ground into the neutral and it works perfectly. Tried one of the 5 amp switches for a 3 way config and couldnt get it to work.
Asked by: DIY
Unfortunately Lutron cannot recommend tying in the ground connection into the neutral in any application. The dimming sensor, model MSCL-OP153M-WH, can be used without a ground connection, however you will want to ensure the load you are using is dimmable.

Customer Reviews

Maestro 5 Amp Single-Pole/3-Way Vacancy Sensing Switch - Gray is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 3.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Exactly As Described Another excellent Lutron product!! After one of my employees hooked 4 of these up in a client's home, he informed me one was not working and that it was "bad out of the box". I have installed over 300 of their products and have never come across a bad unit. After double checking everything, I thought the perfect streak was over, but low and behold, the ground wire was disconnected in another switch box, so this unit technically did not have an earth ground (even though the ground wire was connected to this sensor). Once this was fixed, it worked perfectly. KEY POINT: These units MUST have a proper ground connected to function properly. If it appears it is not working properly, check the ground! If you EVER think you have a bad Lutron product out of the box, I would highly suggest double checking the installation. Lastly another reviewer complained that there was not enough large wire nuts included for their installation, but no manufacturer can supply everything you may need. We have all been in this situation and it stinks, but we must take responsibility to be informed and prepared for project that we are about to do. Not to mention, the packaging on this product is clear plastic (so you can see what is included and what is not :) Cheers

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works well for me It's a vacancy sensor, so it turns the lights off when no motion is detected for the selected time delay. It does not turn them on when someone walks into the room. I put it in my 28 x28 ft. garage a few weeks ago, replacing a single switch that controlled 6 100W incandescent lights. The included instructions were fine and the installation was straightforward, at least for this simple use case. The switch has no problems detecting motion across the room, and handles the 600W load with no apparent problems. If you are still enough, long enough for the switch to turn the lights off on you, you can wave an arm or something right away and it will turn the lights back on. That's a nice feature as it lets you use a shorter delay than might work otherwise. I haven't had it long enough to rate durability, so gave it 4/5 on Quality. The Value score was harder to determine. The switch, plus a wall plate to match, will have to save me from about 540 hours of lights left on to pay for itself, but it's hard to estimate how often, and for how long each time, somebody will forget to turn these lights off.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great sensor, skimped on parts The sensor works great - it's actually sensitive enough to detect your presence unlike many other types of sensors I've tried. Installation was easy, even for a first-timer trying to install as a 3-pole configuration into a complex/crammed 3 switch box. The problem is that this kit doesn't come with enough of the large (yellow) wire nuts to safely install the whole system in a 3 pole configuration. You need all four of the large wire nuts to connect the sensor switch in its 3 pole configuration, leaving only the tiny blue nut to twist together three heavy gauge wires for the modified physical switch on the other end. Swapping the blue one for a yellow one is still not good because the blue one is too small to adequately protect the wires on the sensor switch from accidentally touching another wire in the box and shorting. It would have been nice if they hadn't skimped and just supplied you with five full sized wire nuts. Now I have to make another trip (considerably out of the way) to the nearest hardware store just to pick up the right sized wire nut.
