Customer Questions & Answers

Can this be used with LED bulbs?

Can this be used with LED bulbs?
Asked by: buddy
It can, but if you are using screw-in LED bulbs in a fixture, you can get the same function for about half the money, using an electronic (but not low-voltage) dimmer, and with many of them you don't have to have a neutral line, as you do with this one. You don't need an electronic low-voltage (trailing edge) dimmer for many LED lights, and if you do, it will be clearly specified. With this one, and others like it, you have to wire three leads: line, load and neutral. With conventional dimmers, you only need line and load.

Is there a minimum wattage on a electronic low voltage dimmer

Asked by: Brandonelectric
Not on this one, or for a few others from the same manufacturer that I looked at. The maximum for all lights combined on this dimmer is 300 watts, but no minimum. My setup had two 18 watt lights, and I tested the dimmer with them individually as well as wired in parallel, and no problems. I did ask the same question of the manufacturer before I ordered it, because I wasn't anywhere near the capacity of the dimmer, and the only comment about that was that with very low-wattage lights, which they described as a total of less than 5 watts, the light(s) may go off before the dimmer control is fully at the end of the slide. This was no issue with my lights. With these lights, the dimming appeared to be ever so slightly stepped as the slider was moved, as opposed to truly continuous, but the stepping was minor, probably not noticeable to most, important to even fewer, and not enough for me to even comment on in my review. You had to sweep the slider to notice it, which wouldn't be part of normal use.

Is this switch classified as being digital and will it work with eglo light fixtures?

Is this switch classified as being digital and will it work with eglo light fixtures?
Asked by: Angela
This product is classified as a mechanical style dimmer and is not a digital style. As for the Eglo lights that you are using, as long as they are dimmable with an ELV style dimmer, then this product should be able to control them.

Skylark 300-Watt Single-Pole Electronic Low-Voltage Dimmer - Light Almond is rated 4.8 out of 5 by 9.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Worked good I hoped the dimming would go a little lower but it worked good on my sylvania light disks that I installed.

This is a trailing-edge-type electronic low-voltage dimmer that some LED lights require. It dims these particular lights all the way to off, and no noise like some dimmers. It is rather pricey, but necessary in this case. The only downside is that the body of the dimmer inside the box is rather large and deep (about 1-3/8"), so if your box is not deep there may not be room for the dimmer and the existing wires in the box. This box had a fan timer (another bulky body) next to it in a deep (2-1/2") triple box, plus a regular 3-way switch, and it was a real fight to get everything inside. Also, unlike many dimmers this one requires a neutral for the dimmer, which is to say that there are three leads that must be connected: line, load, and neutral. If you don't have a neutral already in the box you will have to run one for this to work. So word to the wise if you are thinking about new lights that you want to dim: if you are considering true LED lights (these are cobb-type), as opposed to a light fixture that you can screw LED bulbs into (almost all screw-in LED bulbs can use a less expensive dimmer), check and see what kind of dimmer is required. This was the least expensive trailing edge dimmer I could find, and I already had a neutral in the box.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Dimmer for Filament LEDs Works very well with Filament LEDs. The neutral wire gives the Dimmer slide excellent control.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Best dimmer for LED lighting This is by far the best dimmer I've found for use with dimmable LED light fixtures. There is no humming and no flickering like with most other dimmers, and the range of lighting intensity is great. The only downside of the product is the fact that it does require a neutral connection, so I designed my wiring with that in mind, and any competent electrician should be able to do the same. But the main reason I don't give it 5 stars is the price. There's no reason this should cost about twice the price of 2-wire dimmers, because the manufacturing cost is about the same as other dimmers. And it would sell better if it was available in stores and did not have to be special ordered.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works Great This dimmer is being used in conjunction with a Pixi 2 ft x 2 ft Edge-Lit LED Flat Light Luminaire. The light indicated this dimmer was approved for the light. The light and dimmer combination is great.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good product I needed an ELV(electronic low voltage) dimmer to work best with my CREE LED bulbs that I put into my 3 pendant lights. Regular dimmer I found in store rated for use with LED bulbs did not work as well(lights kept humming). Worth it for me to spend the extra money for this one. Shipped fast and now installed-works perfect- no more humming/buzzing. Nature of the beast I guess!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from electronic dimmer This dimmer although expensive seems to work perfectly. Easy installation and has a very good range of dimming down to barely a glow on the pendant lights it governs. It's a must to have an electronic dimmer for low voltage lighting and they are all rather expensive so this was a good purchase with a fine result

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great purchase, good service After lots of searching, the switch was not in stock and a reliable store assistant was very helpful in finding them online. The part was easy to install and works good.
