The front cover is a little flimsy. Simple controls. Seems accurate.

I previously had two Lux programmable thermostats for my heating and air conditioning units. So it was pretty easy to make the upgrade. The old ones were fourteen years old and one of them starting having some glitches so I replaced them both with these new ones which have better features, One of them being that they become illuminated when you touch one of the buttons and the characters are bigger and easier to read. They give you the tabs to label the wires-this is most important when installing. Programming is very simple. I am very satisfied with these thermostats.

The Lux TX500U is a very nice thermostat that can operate from furnace power as well as its own batteries. Most thermostats nowadays operate only on their batteries. When the batteries die your furnace doesn’t work so you can wake up one morning to a very cold house. For furnace power you need to connect the “C” wire at the furnace and at the thermostat. For three thermostat functions (Heat, Cool, and Auto/Fan) you need three wires plus R and C, for a total of five wires in the House Cable. If you don’t have five wires it can be a problem. I made an adapter (one at the furnace and one at the thermostat) that provides all three functions and furnace power with only four wires. It also provides a backchannel from the furnace to the thermostat. I use a phototransister looking at the Diagnostic LED on the furnace control board and send its status to an LED at the thermostat. This way, if something goes wrong with my furnace I don’t have to go into the attic (where my furnace is) to look at the Diagnostic LED. I also made a version that uses only three wires. These adapters can also be used with Wi-Fi thermostats. (Note the TX500E cannot work on furnace power.)

The thermostat is easy to use and program. We like the fact that it displays BOTH the set temperature AND the current inside temperature. Many of the ones on the market do not!!

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by murf Most affordable programmable thermostat available
I purchased this new release of the TX500U for my rental property where I provide heating and cooling. The TX500U is probably the most affordable programmable thermostat on the market. Took about 15 minutes to install. I also added a Lux Products A773001 Large Locking Thermostat Guard to prevent my tenants from tempering with the thermostat. The TX500U is a great value and works great and I expect to save money on my utility expenses since the TX500U offers programming capability.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by PleasedCustomer Good for garage application.
Using LUX TX-500Uc thermostat in my garage to maintain garage cool but above freezing, and facilitate a greater warm-up when wanted. Thermostat controls a 2-stage heater with 17K BTU / 5K watt on each stage. Thermostat allows good setup flexibility for minimum temp., temp. swing, and temp. offset to control 2-nd. stage. It's the only thermostat that I could find that met my needs to provide a low stage heating temp. control without kicking in the high stage heat unless demand was unusually high or manually switched on.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by RWS Good Thermostat with Many Programmable Features
This is a nice thermostat with many features not available on more name brand and expensive thermostats. It took me about 30 minutes to install. I especially like the swing feature (can set from 1 to 9 or +/- 0.25 to 2.25 degrees around the set temperature). My previous thermostat (not Lux) had a fixed (non-programmable) swing of 1.0 degrees and the furnace ran too often. Sometimes, the furnace would start running again in 2-3 minutes after it had just shut down. I set the Lux at 2 (+/- 0.5 degrees) around the set temperature as a starting point as that would be equivalent to my old thermostat's swing. The Lux works great at this setting and does not cycle my furnace frequently. I thought I would have to set the swing higher than 2 to reduce my furnace cycling but have not had to.
The only issue I've had with this unit is that occasionally the room temperature will swing 1-2 degrees as I'm looking at the thermostat. This issue hasn't affected it's performance but it can be a little unnerving to watch.
The screen is small compared to newer thermostats but the size is fine with me. Also, some reviewers have said the cover door is flimsy and the unit doesn't attach to the wall securely. If you use reasonable care in opening and closing the cover door it works fine. My unit is securely attached to the wall so there are no issues there. You need to ensure the wall is flat and the screw anchors in the wall are at least flush with the wall.

Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Ronnie replacement thermostat at home
This Lux thermostat provided an important feature that many other more expensive thermostats do not have. That is an easily adjustable swing value. This allows for fewer on/off cycles and thereby increased efficiency of the gas heat, without degrading the comfort level. It can be finely tuned to your house.
