It works by having a series of electrical heaters and running the water slowly across all these heaters to warm the water. It only 'warms' the water if the flow exceeds 2 gallons per minute. Also it depends on the inlet water temp being over about 45F if you want a full flow shower.

It works by having a series of electrical heaters and running the water slowly across all these heaters to warm the water. It only 'warms' the water if the flow exceeds 2 gallons per minute. Also it depends on the inlet water temp being over about 45F if you want a full flow shower.
So with a water saving shower head, and living in the southern states, you can get 1.2 gallons per minute at a decent water temperature. However in the northern states, with typical cold water around 45F, it will not heat the water to a really hot level at 1 gallon per minute. Consult the water flow charts before ordering and installing this type of heater.
You might require a larger capacity heater if you live where the water inlet is very cold, or you plan on running two things at once, such as taking a shower while the washing machine or dishwasher might be filling at the same time. Even taking a shower and someone washing their hands while using as little as 0.5 GPM will cool the outlet hot water significantly. Read Less

Answer:
40 amps would require either #8 or #6 wire, depending on the length from the electrical panel to the water heater. Consult a electrician on these requirements.
It requires a 40 amp 240 volt electrical connection, and at minimum 3/4" conduit, probably 1" conduit. This is difficult for most homeowners to install themselves.

Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Big Mistake For Me I purchased this tankless waterheater during the summer months (august). As long as the temperature outside was above 80 degrees this heater worked fine. As it began to get colder, so did the water. I can't run a tub of water to take a bath because the water isn't hot enough. After the water runs for more than a minute, it automatically gets cold. I can't wash my clothes in hot water because it only runs hot water for about two minutes and then it turns COLD... January 7, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Very happy with my investment!! My old tank water heater was just giving me headaches with the large bills I was paying so I finally decided to invest in a tankless water heater.. This Santon unit has been a great contribution to my household and saved me a lot of money considering the small investment I made on it! Not only has the unit saved me money but it has also worked outstanding for me and functions very efficiently! Because the unit is so compact, I was able to install it right below my kitchen sink, right at the point of use! I must say the customer service I received with this product was outstanding as well, they were very thorough when I had a little question regarding installation and exceeded my expectations! Overall, I would definitely recommend this unit to anyone looking to switch over from their bulky tank water heater! January 15, 2014
