Gap between my house and driveway

No, one should never twist multiple strands of backer rod together for a larger joint. You can buy it up to 4" OD. The reason is that backer rod's only purpose is for sealant shape and depth control. Joint sealant needs to have an hourglass shape and reasonable depth so it does not fail during expansion/contraction. Answer: 
No it is not, but they make other backer rods for hot-applied sealants. These rods are rated to withstand roughly 200 degrees F, but that is not intended for extended exposure or hot sealants.
