Shsower headflows when trying to fill the tub

The contractor that I hired for my bathroom remodel installed this Moen Banbury tub spout/shower head into our newly remodeled bathroom. When ever I turn on the water now it flows from both the tub spout and the shower head. This is really annoying (and messy). I dug out the installation instructions and studied them. Instructions say that the tub spout should be no greater than 11 inches below the valve. I measured the distance from the bottom of the cover plate to the top of the spout at 12 inches. Center of the valve handle to the center of the spout is 16 inches. Is this distance the reason for the problem? If so is there any fix short of tearing up the wall and relocating everything? (I really don't want to deal with this contractor any more.)

Just to follow up on this (I'm the one who posed the original question above), to fix the problem we hired a different contractor, who hired a professional, licensed plumber, and they re-positioned the valve according to the instructions from Moen and now it works great. The problem was not the valve, it was clearly the installation. Unfortunately this required breaking into the wall and re-tiling the shower, so it cost us a bundle. I have found out since that the first contractor was not licensed to do plumbing work. My recommendation: Be sure you hire a licensed plumber who will read and follow directions.

How far should the base of the faucet handle be from the trim plate?

I measured and re-measured when installing so I think I have it right. However, the base of the faucet handle is 1/2" from the trim plate and the handle is loose with the set screw fairly tight. I don't want to continue to tighten the screw until I am sure this is correct, I don't want to crack the plastic inside. Thanks!

You have it installed correctly. I ran into this same issue when I installed mine and I thought it looked wrong so I called Moen. They confirmed that the 1/2" gap was correct. I said it looked terrible and they offered me a 1/2" escutcheon plate extender for $116. You can buy them on-line from other dealers for around $70.

Are there gasket accessories for the trim plate? There is a leak into downstairs wall.

Asked by: keith
Trim plate has gasket on back. Normally seals very well. Unusual to have that issue. Are you sure that the water is coming from behind trim? I would take off trim plate and run water to see if any leaks around valve.

Upon installation we realized that it does not let enough water flow through, causing back pressure to go up the pipe and water to come out of the shower head while the bath water is running. We went back to the store and purchased a new one, but had the same problem. Ended up going back again and purchasing a different model, and problem solved. I agree with many other reviewers that this product is not well made. I would not recommend this product when there are so many other options.

I just purchased this set and will return this before it is even installed as all the parts are PLASTIC! I refuse to pay $145 for all plastic parts. How is this even acceptable and from Moen?

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Plastic From other reviews, it was stated that the materials were metal. When I received it, plastic is what it was. When you look at the one at HD on the display rack it is metal. My customer is furious and now I have to do the job twice, return Moen and get a Kohler.

It partly my fault for not reading packaging full. But was pretty disapointed that is does not come with the overfill/drain plug so know my tub does not match. Other than that the product seem good. I did not install it myself so I can't say how easy it was to install. I will note thought that the plumber I had install it did not as or set the temperature saftey to prevent burns. I will try to update this reveiws down the road as I used the reviews to base my purchase and many other purchase I have made.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from 2 yr to failure I'm 2 years since install and the cartridge has gone out. It started a week before with the handle being difficult to close and then poof, it spun instead of closing leaving my water on. I was fortunate to have installed a couple of valves behind my washer or else it would have been no water to the house just to keep us from flooding. I'll have to remove tile and redo plumbing to make this work. I have yet to get a new part, though I'm sure Moen will honor the warranty. Still, even with the warranty, I'll be several hours over several days to get this fixed. Should I put this same part in? and risk having to tear apart my bathroom again in 2 years?

Took us 2 days to get this kit assembled and it's still not sturdy! Most parts in this entire kit are made of cheap plastic. Could not be more disappointed that I actually paid for this product to finish off my bathroom remodel. Handle assembly does not sit flush & appears tilted. Water spout will not attach correctly, is completely unstable, and wiggles around when barely touched. What a complete waste of time & $$$$$$$ !!!!!!!

This thing is awesome, I love the look of it and it works great. Lots of people complaining about the shower head leaking, SMH, I followed the instructions to a T and have had no issues. I used CPVC for all connections except the downspout as instructed in the manual for that I used IPS, 10" piece down and a 5" piece out to the spout. I cant comment on having drywall as a backing as I used the thin wall base plate for a thin wall installation and the handle sits perfectly in the escutcheon plate. One thing I noted though is the hole needs to be larger than the minimum recommended or the plate will not sit flush as the screw holes won't sink properly. Overall very pleased with the product, this was installed in our main bathroom we completed, gutted and refinished the room over the course of 2 mos.
