are these tiles the same as "lay in" ceiling tiles?

i'm being told by a contractor that these are not the same as the more standard stucco or mud "lay in" tiles but the description seems to suggest that they would essentially work the same. a more specific question would be, are these the same as "lay in" ceiling tiles?

All boxes were delivered to our home undamaged and in great condition. Product is heavier that previous drop ceiling tiles - thus we reinforced our grid some in our Basement Family Room. It has made a SIGNIFICANT difference in the look of our basement and the bright white tiles brightened up the whole area as well. Would definitely recommend!

These new tiles look great, but they are not good for a small conference room - too noisy. We will now need to add a design feature to the room so the sound is grounded. But, again, they look great and were easy to install.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Product was unsatisfactory. In the picture they looked very nice but when I received them 38 out of 40 that I ordered where broken. The product was not what I thought it would look like. I found some other ceiling tiles that where really nice , easy to hang and less expense.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent replacement ceiling tile The good: easy to handle (doesn't crumble), easy to cut. Being half the thickness, it was easier to install than standard tiles. (I have almost zero clearance, so that was a critical matter for me.) The bad: price. I'd say it's twice the cost of what it "should" be. What I base "should" on? I dunno, but, it was really expensive, compared to the crumbly stuff. That's it. No other "bads" to add to the list. These are good tiles. The ugly: Nothing. These things are positively gorgeous, compared to standard, ugly tiles. Cleaner install too. Other notes: I'll get more, and replace add'l tiles in my basement, when I can get these on sale. Should mention, these are not "acoustic" tiles, unless you're designing an echo chamber. They're flat, hard surfaced ceiling tiles. that's not a problem, unless you don't have any soft surfaces in the space. It could get loud and echo-y very fast. Also, they don't provide sound proofing. They're purely ceiling tiles. If soundproofing is required, spray insulating foam on the back of the panels before inserting. Ideally, if it's a new project - spray foam (insulation & sound proofing) after the wires are hung, but before the grid is installed. Recommendations for what would make it even better: cut the price; make them slightly more flexible, for hard to insert locations; STOCK IN LOCAL STORES; 2x2 options would also be nice (might exist...dunno)
