Product Overview

Best Acoustical Underlayment irons out little subfloor imperfections while quieting impact sounds and floor-to-ceiling noise. Not only does it dampen ambient sound in the room it's installed in, but it also inhibits sound from traveling into the room below. Although it is promoted as an upgrade underlayment taking the place of poly foam, it doesn't carry a heavy upgrade price when compared with cork or rubber. In recent head-to-head Sound Transmission Loss tests, Best Acoustical Underlayment outperformed both cork and rubber in the majority of test band frequencies. Certified field sound tests were performed on an installation over a standard 6 in. concrete sub floor, and received an FIIC score of 71.

  • Environmentally friendly, utilizing over 89% recycled fibers; green product in contrast to petroleum-based underlayment
  • Synthetic fiber pads are fast becoming the most specified underlayment for floating wood and laminate floors by architects and designers because of their acoustical and moisture protection qualities
  • Superior acoustical test scores that generally meet or exceed the requirements for sound barriers between floors in multiple housing construction set forth by most municipality or condominium association building codes
  • Roll measures 400 in. x 36 in. x 1/8 in.
  • Designed to draw sound in and help deaden it, not deflect, helping make laminate floors sound more like real wood
  • It has an Impact Insulation Class (IIC) rating of 60 and a Sound Transmission Class (STC) rating of 54
  • Offers great moisture protection
  • Can be installed over wood or concrete subfloors

Customer Questions & Answers

Can this be used on a wall?

I live in a condo and my bedroom abuts my neighbor's unit. They are loud partiers and have a very yippy dog. I would like to do a bit of sound dampening on the wall behind my bed. I was thinking that I could use this product and then use rolls of cork on top for further sound insulation and to provide a smooth surface to paint. Does anyone know if this would work? If not, is there a similar product for walls? I don't want to have to remove the drywall, since this will be a truly do-it-myself project. My condo is a loft with 12' ceilings that are concrete and I was actually thinking of using the cork on the bedroom ceiling too, to dampen sound and provide more insulation. Thanks

If you don't want to remove the drywall, I believed you could use this product to dampen sound and provide insulation; it has a film as heat barrier. I can barely hear my daughter steps now that I have this underlayment in my bedroom that is in top of the garage. Good luck.

Can I intall this for laminate flooring over concrete?

I bought this product to install in my living room under some laminate flooring. Is this ok on top of a concrete floor? will moisture be an issue on the bottom felt side? Just seems like the felt could potentially hold in moisture itself.
Asked by: skyc
You will have to use a moisture barrier. Concrete always sweat. I am using it on 3/4 inch osb sub-floors. This underlayment has a plastic film for heat barrier. In my opinion with concrete you will need something like 6 ml plastic before installing this underlayment. Sold in The Home Depot painting section. Good luck.

Could this be used to "build up" accent tile to match field tile on a backsplash?

I would like to use standard tile mortar to apply my accent tile to this, and then apply this (using mortar again) to the wall. Ditra is a tad too thick.

Sorry, but I don't think you could use this in your project.

Can this be used under loose lay linoleum?

We have a Dricore subfloor over concrete in a section of our garage (being used as a mudroom) and the Dricore instructions say we should use an underlayment if putting linoleum on it. Would this be okay to use as an underlayment between the subfloor and the linoleum? Thank you!
Asked by: RV
Directly over concrete you will need a moisture barrier, otherwise will be ok, I have used it with laminate and osb sub-flooring. Hope it helps.

Best 400 in. x 36 in. x 1/8 in. Acoustical Recycled Fiber Underlayment with Film for Laminate Wood is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 45.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Product After a recent flood here in Houston, we decided to replace most of the carpet in our home with Laminate. In the master bedrrom, we also decided to install two radiant heat pads (3' x 10') on each side of the bed. We ordered this underlayment due to it being the same thickness as the heat pads. When I continued laying laminate in another room, I purchased underlayment (at the same price) at our local HD that was not near the quality, sound absorbing or dense as this product. It was the best that the local store had . Grr... Now, I have ordered and received more of this underlayment for the remainder of the project. It absorbs more sound, feels firmer while adding a gread pad, and is also eisier to putdown and cut. This is the underlayment that YOU want in your home. Dale

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best Underlayment I just used this in conjunction with natural bamboo click lock flooring also obtained from The Home Depot. I must say it was easier than expected. The hardest part was scraping the glue from the slab prior to installation. Roll this padding out, duct tape together the seams, and go to it. Highly recommended. I installed 225sq' in a day, carpet removal, scraping, underlayment, and hardwood, and finished off the thresholds and 1/4 round the following day.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent underlayment After researching several types of underlayment for my wood flooring project i chose the MP Global Best. The project is an engineered wood floor installed over a concrete slab (floating) and the results have been very good. What I like most is the floor has a more solid sound when walking on it, compared to the hollow, clicking sound some underlayments have. Easy to install, reasonably priced, and free delivery.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good quality underlayment. Absorbs noise. Some laminate floors I've installed (or friend's flooring) tends to have a hollow sound. This underlayment absorbs sound, making the flooring seem more like solid wood. NOTE: You need duct tape to install - it does not have an overlapping adhesive strip like most.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Worth the price. I am a 64 years old lady and I have never done anything like this before but I wanted to try. I bought a very inexpensive laminate floor with very good reviews hence I was able to go for a more expensive underlayment. I saw this one at the store and I decided to go with this one. No other would have worked for me. It does not have a seam tape attached but I bought a mesh one used for sheet rock. Perfect match. I am in the process of buying more of the 40 boxes of laminate that I bought and I will continue with this underlayment. Not need to experiment with others. Very easy to spread it and tape it and I did it without help. Buy a good sharp blade. My no expensive laminate sounds like a high end wood floor, it sounds solid to walk on it. Very happy with the results.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from I Recommend Eco Cork Instead I recommend Eco Cork instead of MP Best. We installed a 12 mm laminate over the Best product and were immediately disappointed with the echoic sound. Very cheap sounding. We pulled up the floor and replaced the underlayment with Eco Cork and the difference was dramatic. The hollow sound was replaced with a solid sound. maybe not like real wood but definitely a quality sound. That being said, the MP Best was much easier to install than the Eco Cork.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Fair value It is a quality product. Just note that it needs seam tape. Other underlayment I have used has a flap of plastic to create the seam. The salesman failed to point that out to me. Also, the recycled fiber will come apart if you use a dull knife. I reccommend scissor or very sharp knife.
