I recently put up the Metro Glacier 12 in. x 24 in. BEIGE/TAN tile in my bathroom. I'm confused now as to which grout to use. What do you guys recommend (I know it's preference). My accent pieces are grey. I'm torn between the Pewter and Snow White by Home Depot.

Spots only when wet?

Love the look of this tile but after buying a case noticed a pattern of spots on just about all the tiles only when wet. Just wondering if this is some kind of glue residue from packing or something worse? It doesn't show when dry but am very concerned about the quality if I am seeing this odd pattern? I want to make sure there isn't a bigger problem before buying mass quantities of this tile.

We just picked up 30 cases of this tile and my husband noticed on the box it has a warning to avoid using a 50% offset. The salesperson did not inform us of this, if it is in fact an issue. Thank you...

Answer:
Thank you for your question. In general 1/3rd offset pattern is suggested to minimize lip page as per ASTM standards. It is recommended that a professional installer be consulted to check if the herringbone pattern installation result would be satisfactory for this particular installation.

Answer:
I use this tile in many projects, and I always set it in offset patterns.
However, you should understand the reason for the warning about a herringbone pattern.
Ceramic tile is made from clay. When it's fired in a kiln, the clay shrinks and warps slightly. This is especially true for large, cheap tiles like these.

Inspect these tiles closely, and you'll notice that they're slightly domed. If you set them in a 50% offset, they'll align in a pattern that makes the curvature especially obvious.
In some applications, this matters. For example, it'd be especially noticeable on a countertop. But on the floor or in a shower, it may not be a concern.
If you're new to setting tile, you should do a trial layout with your tile to see how it looks before you install it with thinset. If the curvature is an issue, consider laying it with a 1/3 offset. I usually do this, and nobody but me ever notices the curvature. Read Less

Answer:
It should be laid with a 1/3 offset, but can be laid in different patterns vertically or horizontally, as long as the offset is followed.

Customer Reviews

Metro Charcoal 12 in. x 24 in. Glazed Porcelain Floor and Wall Tile (16 sq. ft. / case) is rated 4.2 out of 5 by 240.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Easy to Work With AND Easy to Clean No problem installing and cutting - and I love the larger size. Easiest tile install I've ever done. I have read a lot of reviews claiming that this tile isn't easy to clean. So, I waited several months before reviewing. I installed the lightest version of this in our most frequently visited bathroom. It has been used and abused! I have had ZERO problem cleaning it. It looks as good as it did when I installed it a little under 6 months ago. I even painted the bathroom afterwards - no problem cleaning up splatters. I can only surmise that a difference in lots might account for this??? Whatever the case, I am thrilled with this tile!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from LOVE IT! My son wanted a "man's" bathroom. Boy did he get it! I actually got the BLACK. I ordered Charcoal originally, and it is almost light blue gray. I swapped it for the black, which is really a good charcoal medium gray. The stripes give it just enough pzazz to keep it from being boring, but its not to busy. Everything but the Tub is trimmed out in black around it - see pictures- and it really makes the tile shine. Its been installed for a month now, easy to clean. You a grout release before you grout though, or you will have so much extra time spent in cleaning that up! You can see in 2 of the pictures it looks lighter with the bright light on it, and darker otherwise. The flash washed it out.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Metro Charcoal tile This is pretty decent product. I only had one tile that was cracked and two tiles with very tiny chips out of 15 boxes. I switched them out at the store without a problem. The tile is smooth to walk on and has a matte finish. The color is tricky to explain though because it depends on the light. In pictures, it either shows up very light or dark and it's hard to get an accurate representation of the color. There are beige tones in it. If you're looking for complete gray and a little darker, go with the Metro Gris. I liked Metro Charcoal because it's a little lighter and more neutral. We initially used a lighter gray grout (Poly Blend Natural Gray) but it was nearly the same color tone, so it just blended in with the tile. The grout dried with uneven colors including white, so we changed grout colors before finishing. We switched to TEC Power Grout in Charcoal gray and that dried with consistent color, and the contrast against the tile looks much better. We have only had it installed a few days but I can see where others are coming from with it showing spots easily although we haven't really had any trouble cleaning it. You would probably run into the same probably with a light tile or a dark one, so it's probably not a problem specific to this tile. I also agree that the tiles are not all uniform in size and thickness, so some areas of the floor might not be completely flat, but I assume this is the case for other tile. I will provide an update in a few months to say how it's holding up.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Does not clean I have family that previously owned a flooring company. They recommended using vinegar and water to clean the tile. We've tried everything from drying the tile after washing, to a steam cleaner and NOTHING gets the "footprints" smudging off the floor. It NEVER looks clean. We wanted something that looked clean and was easy to maintain. So disappointed in this tile.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Nice but chips easily. This tile looks great IF you don't use a wet saw. It chips easily but for the price with a little extra care and use of a tile cutter you can't go wrong.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Doesn't clean! I wanted tile throughout my house for easy cleaning. This tile doesn't come clean. I've tried every product on it. As I can see from other reviews, other people are having the same problem. It looks great in the store but after only 3 months of use, there are black areas. I've gotten down on hands and knees with a scrub brush and even that doesn't get it clean. These tiles are terrible.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from horrible packing Ordered 6- boxes of 8 tiles each. Came from manufacturer(I suppose). Promptly received product in 3 days, via ups delivery. Came NOT packaged in original cartons. Was shipped in 12-boxes of 4 tiles each! Each box of 4 tiles was totally encapsulated wit expandable spray foam. I understand why this was done, but removing the tiles was more than I bargained for. It took 2 1/2 hours to get tiles out of boxes, and I was left with a mountain of cardboard, and expandable foam to dispose of! Was originally going to return order to store, but didn't (against my better judgement). Not Home Depots fault, but still not a good way to ship a product. Tile is nice, though. Be sure it's at a local store before purchasing it, though.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Uptown tile for bathroom and kitchen We installed the metro gris tile in our kitchen, bathroom, laundry room, and bonus room off the kitchen It looks great and is easy to sweep, mop, or wipe up. As other reviewers have mentioned, it does tend to show marks easily, like every time you come in form outside and walk across with your shoes on, you'll notice. So, we've started a new tradition of taking our shoes off when we come in. Then it stays beautiful without constant mopping. When our guys installed it, they did mention there was a lot of "ghosting" of the grout ... it was very hard to get the grout off the tiles and get it looking clean. But somehow they got it done. Regarding choosing the right grout color for this tile ... We used pewter grout on the metro gris tiles in the bathroom. From a photo I had of the work progress, I thought the pewter grout was too brownish. So we got the "dove gray" custom color grout for the kitchen. When I arrived on site and saw the pewter grout in the bathroom, it was PERFECT! The problem had been the lighting in the photo. And then ... when I saw the dove gray grout in the kitchen in person ... it was too blue/lavender ... oh darn. Oh well! It still looks fine in the kitchen, even with the mis-matched grout ... after all, the grout is a small amount of the whole surface area. Mostly you see the beautiful tiles. But now I know, for future reference ... if you want a grout color that will blend in with this tile (so the grout lines don't jump out at you), and one that matches the color of the tiles themselves ... the in-stock pewter grout is the one to get.
