This tile is constructed from durable slate material and features a semi-vitreous water absorption rating. NOTE: Inspect all tiles before installation. Natural stone products inherently lack uniformity and are subject to variation in color, shade, finish, etc. It is recommended to blend tiles from different boxes when installing. Natural stones may be characterized by dry seams and pits that are often filled. The filling can work its way out and it may be necessary to refill these voids as part of a normal maintenance procedure. All natural stone products should be sealed with a penetrating sealer. Visible surface: honed or natural cleft?

I'm guessing that for these tiles "Gauged" is referring either to the overall uniform thickness or the scoring on the backside to assist in adhering with the thinset. Is the visible surface honed (completely smooth) or natural cleft (rough with the natural layers of the slate)? I ask because we'd like to use these for a countertop and are concerned about maintaining cleanliness if the surface is not honed smooth. Thanks!

Rated 4.8 out of 5 by 68 reviewers.
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Nice, Durable Tile We used this tile in the mudroom from our garage. It has some variation in height due to the fact that it's a natural stone and has variation in color from gray to black. We tried to sort through the boxes to mix the colors throughout the room. It cut great with a wet saw, no cracking, even on all the corners I had with the herringbone pattern. We sealed it 2 times before grouting and had no problem with our sanded grout sticking to it, although we were diligent in keeping up with wiping the excess grout off. The condition of every tile was excellent as we opened each box. Overall, I think it will be a nice entrance that we'll enjoy for many years. April 8, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Very Happy!! We are very happy with this tile after installing in our master bathroom shower. Since this is slate, it was hard to get everything level during the installation due to the varying depths of the tile. I sealed the tile multiple times before grouting and it was still a struggle to get the grout off the tile. We used the Fusion grout which dries super quick and was easily absorbed by the slate. This resulted in doing just a few inches of grout, cleaning and taking a wire brush to the tile to remove the grout that was absorbed by the slate. It was very tedious but it was worth it in the end. We used platinum grout which provides a nice contrast against the dark gray. Highly recommend!! March 31, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by I've gotten so many compliments! I've put in quite a few floors in my home but I think I've gotten the most compliments on this one! I ordered online and had it delivered to my house. It was packed extremely well! March 29, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Love it! Absolutely love it. The tile arrived on schedule, and packaged really well. No broken tiles! I will definitly order more whe I remodel my kitchen. August 17, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Tile guy said it was the best I bought this slate before we even hired an installer because we knew it was perfect for our bathroom floor. We used it throughout the bathroom and continued it into the zero entry shower. Our installer said it was the best slate he had ever used. It did not flake or chip when he cut it, and he said the sharp edges and uniform thickness made the installation easy. He said the stone was more like travertine in the way it was cut, so all the tiles butted together perfectly, very little grout was needed. Also, he was able to bullnose pieces to make tile baseboards around the whole room. We get lots of compliments! May 31, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great, consistent slate tile I put about 250 square feet of this in a beach house that I'm renovating and really love how it turned out. Installation was easy (I used a Ditra uncoupling membrane between the tile and the slab) and the end result looks fabulous. I even did a bathroom over Ditra-heat and it provides amazing warmth. Out of the 15 or so cases of slate I installed there were probably 6-8 broken tiles. Most of those I was able to salvage at least some part for edge pieces. I cut the slate with a diamond blade on a wet saw and it worked really well. May 30, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Absolutely Gorgeous I am so happy that I bought this stone tile. I used it for my modern fireplace design, along with my bathroom floors. The characteristics and textures of the stone are stunning, organic and raw. The quality is superb and the price is very fair. June 9, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Love this! I used this for a project, not for flooring and it worked great! Once the tiles were enhanced they were the darkest black and absolutely gorgeous. I would highly recommend these tiles. They are slate, so handle with care. May 17, 2016
