Product Overview

Multi Color is a natural stone slate that is formed in layers and split to expose vibrant colors and a unique texture. With a large selection of sizes and accessories to choose from, Multi Color can easily be laid in a pattern or single layout. This 4 in. x 4 in. tumbled slate floor and wall tile from MS International is suitable for residential and commercial installations, including kitchens and bathrooms. NOTE: Inspect all tiles before installation. Natural stone products inherently lack uniformity and are subject to variation in color, shade, finish, etc. It is recommended to blend tiles from different boxes when installing. Natural stones may be characterized by dry seams and pits that are often filled. The filling can work its way out and it may be necessary to refill these voids as part of a normal maintenance procedure. All natural stone products should be sealed with a penetrating sealer. After installation, vendor disclaims any liabilities.

Customer Questions & Answers

Do these slate tiles measure exactly 4" X 4"? I need slate tiles measuring 3-7/8" X 3-7/8".

These slate tiles look exactly like the ones i need to replace broken ones in a metal-grid table top which will accept tiles 3-7/8" square.

I have seen this tile in many places in Arizona. I would think if you do not have alot of rain year long it may work.

How are these slate tiles installed for a backsplash?

Asked by: Anonymous
Mastic then set by hand. Spacers won't be much use because they vary in size smaller and larger than 4 inch, and many are not square. You'll have to eyeball it and choose each tile carefully to keep any kind of consistent line going. Let dry, seal the tiles, grout, wipe thuroughly and remove any haze (this is tough because of the imperfections in the slate faces), seal everything again, finish.

Wouldn't advise it. These are pretty fragile.

These tiles are beautiful, and with that said the sizes vary in thickness and colors. You will definantely have to purchase twice as much as needed, if not more..... I absolutely love, love, love, the look of slate. It is non slip, durable, and low gloss. It is also low maintenance. I would recommend these tiles just be AWARE that you will have ALOT of breakage in the carton pre-purchased and ALOT of differnent thickness. Overall, when the project is complete you will enjoy the look. FYI....I purchased several accents pieces and had my tile guy do a mosiac and pebble stone look in different ares I wanted this slate to be installed. Be creative :D

We also used it as the backsplash for our Uba Tuba granite counter tops and the contrast and continuity that lends to our kitchen is very nice. So far it has held up well in all three installations. However, this low-priced grade of slate takes a lot of work and attention to purchase, select and install. If buying whole cartons (I think 10 per), buy 50% more than you need and just plan to return what you don't use. We found that at least 1/3 of the tiles in a carton were broken on delivery. If selecting individual tiles plan to spend a lot of time in the store picking through cartons to find enough unbroken tiles for your project. My local HD (Poulsbo, WA) was very good about helping me paw through the selection to find enough to do our entryway, and they were also very good about accepting the broken tiles delivered in whole cartons for the kitchen project. The tiles vary widely in depth, from 1/4" to 3/4" even on the same tile. You can see that from HD's photo of the nine-square mosaic - note the shadow between the upper- and center-right tiles. You will need to lay down the mastic thick under them and may need to tilt some tiles into the mastic to make them match their neighbors. Regardless, I have several tiles in our installation whose edges stick up 1/4" or more from their neighbors - it was unavoidable. Several tiles "flaked" - the top surface had a strata that easily popped away from the rest of the tile using a trowel. I found myself constantly looking for these as obviously I don't want a floor that gradually flakes away. I generally rejected these tiles but of the ones from which I simply popped off the flaky strata, the remaining surface has remained intact for the years we have had the tiles installed. I found myself gently tapping every tile with the handle of a screwdriver and listening for solid thuds. I quickly learned how to hear tiles with unstable top strata. The tiles are flattened on the bottom side but it is not always obvious which is which. I had a worker assist with installation and he didn't pay enough attention to this and installed some tiles upside down. After sealing, the whorl pattern from the machine used to surface them is now visible. Thankfully most of these are in places appearing under rugs or in corners. All of the above added more time to the installation and was frustrating - especially if I opened a carton only to find 7 or 8 of the 10 tiles broken. Being soft stone, the tiles cut very quickly using my $80 wet saw, much easier to cut than the porcelain tiles I have used in other projects. The hassle of the above now history, five years later our floor is still beautiful. My wife loves the variable colors and gradations and the look of the installation lends a very rustic look to our house in the country. There is no evidence of wear. My 3-star rating is due to the poor packaging that resulted in so many broken tiles and what I perceive as poor quality control resulting in the large variability in tile height plus the relatively large number of tiles with pop-off upper strata - not the quality and durability of the installed product. I used a solvent-based sealer on the floor. Slate is so porous it took three coats to get them sealed. If I had it to do over again I would probably use a water-based sealer instead, for the convenience if nothing else.

For a gauged product the tiles were so inconsistent it was ridiculous, anywhere from barely an 1/8" thick to more than 3/8".. I realize that slate is going to have some differences, but I've had slate from regular floor stores for past products that were maybe inconsistent by a 1/4" to 3/8", a lot closer! Also almost every box on the pallet had at least 1-2 tiles broken, some had the whole box's tiles broken in one way or another.. Be prepared for this as I had to go back and buy several more boxes!

My only gripe is some of them come very thin and break easy. If you get them you will need to get plenty extra as many come cracked or are too thin to put down in high traffic areas. I use the broken ones in areas I need to cut anyways and I staggered the lines due to the uneven features of the stone.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great tiles I used these to replace the old pinkish shiny tiles that were on the fireplace, these came with the house when I bought them. These multicolored slate tiles look awesome around the fireplace. The picture they have above does not do them justice. If you go look into the more views and see the ones with the different colors that will give you a better view of how they really look. After doing the fireplace, and loving it so much, I went around the house looking for other places i could put these tiles. Maybe the bigger ones in the bathroom floors. I love the look, they have changed the way the whole living room looks.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Beautiful but tricky to install... I laid 400 sq. ft. of this tile in an older home. It really helps to mask the imperfections of older homes and uneven floors. However, the uneven surface and thickness makes it extremely difficult to grout and to lay. I am an amateur and this was my 2nd do-it-yourself tile project. If you are artistic and have a good eye for patterning, this tile is excellent and can provide a unique floor that will "wow" your guests... Since the first project using this tile, I have used it on 2 more occasions and will be using it to tile the kitchen in my 1895 farm house.
