NOTE: Inspect all tiles before installation. Natural stone products inherently lack uniformity and are subject to variation in color, shade, finish, etc. It is recommended to blend tiles from different boxes when installing. Natural stones may be characterized by dry seams and pits that are often filled. The filling can work its way out and it may be necessary to refill these voids as part of a normal maintenance procedure. All natural stone products should be sealed with a penetrating sealer. Customer Questions & Answers

Do you have corner finished tiles?

I ant to make a hearth out of this and wondered if there are matching tiles for a border around it.
Asked by: Steff
Hopefully you have a tile saw and can cut your own "corner" tiles.

How uniform are the thicknesses from tile to tile are these gauged slate pieces. We don't want toe stubbers!

Planning to use in a large area for kitchen and great room.
Asked by: CJ
Not very uniform. You need to level them by using differing amounts of mortar.

Accent wall installation

I am planning to use these tile above chair rail on an accent wall. Can these tiles be dry stacked? I do not like grout lines. Can they be installed with thinset right over painted drywall?
Asked by: Jules
Absolutely! I love installing slate tile on walls without grout lines.

Can this slate be used outdoors and hold up well to the elements?

Asked by: Bob
I have installed some of these tiles in outdoor areas and a lot of the tiles have held up, but some of the tiles didn't weather the weather too well. Order more tiles than you need and carefully select only the best ones for outdoor installation. You can return the questionable ones or use them in "wall" projects. Yes, you can install slate on your walls (without the need for grout lines). Just cut them in narrow strips (1 1/2" to 2" x 12") and fill up a wall with them. It looks great!

I ordered 2 extra boxes: 1 for breakage and 1 so I could select the colors I most wanted to use. The price was reasonable enough that I felt it worth it to buy extra to maximize my color choice. They were packaged well, but slate breaks easily so there was some breakage. The tiles vary in thickness because it is slate, but my tile man was able to make it work. The colors really come out when you use a tile impregnator and then a high gloss sealer. I used it on a counter top and it looks great - I get a lot of compliments on it.

Not recommended for beginners. If you're new to slate then get some 12" x 12" and do some small projects at first. You will occasionally get some bad tiles in each case (5 pieces). I order multiple cases and then consolidate the bad tiles into one case and return that case. You will find tiles that are cracked down the middle or have a broken corner, etc. One of the ways that I use the 16" x 16" slate tiles for making inset shelving in walls. You do this by cutting the drywall away between the studs in a wall, then cutting and placing the tile in the wall to make a shelf. It's a little complicated so I'm including a picture (a little fuzzy because I used my phone and it wasn't very bright in the room). You can also cut them into thin strips (about 2" x 16") and set them on a small wall. Like I say, slate is the new paint!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A DIY view. I loved this product. There was a lot of variation in the tiles themselves. I've laid tile before and did it this time as well. Yes, there are variations in the thickness of the tiles which you can accommodate with a thicker mortar base. I did run into several tiles that were not square. Those I set aside for pieces I needed cut. I agree with the idea that you need to order extra to accommodate broken pieces. I neededabput 155 square feet and ordered 170. I have some leftover. Keep a carpenters square handy and a L square, especially when working on a diagonal

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Too brittle for outdoor or heavy use. The tiles are brittle and difficult to transport and cut without breaking. nInspect all tiles for breakage before accepting delivery. They are not good for outdoor or uncovered use the weather will destroy them. since they are slate in layers it is easy for water to get between the layers freeze and break them apart. I inherited them installed in a large uncovered walkway and I have to replace 10% of them every year. if you apply if you apply a sealer to them they become Slippery When Wet and are hazardous.

Match was very close. I suspect with some seasoning wear they will eventually blend perfectly. Thank you for your prompt delivery. All pieces arrived in sound shape. I had one square left over. Kudos to me. :) DH

Rated 3 out of 5 by from slate tile 12 x 24 Beautiful once it is sealed with multiple coats of an enhancer sealer. I used an old brush and wiped off excess with an old towel and then repeated this two more times before it was grouted. I will give it a light going over once the grout cures. With that said, it is a beautiful upscale look when completed!
