This tile is suitable for installation on floors and walls. This is a GREENGUARD certified Genuine Stone. NOTE: Inspect all tiles before installation. Natural stone products inherently lack uniformity and are subject to variation in color, shade, finish, etc. It is recommended to blend tiles from different boxes when installing. Natural stones may be characterized by dry seams and pits that are often filled. The filling can work its way out and it may be necessary to refill these voids as part of a normal maintenance procedure. All natural stone products should be sealed with a penetrating sealer. Answer:
Not if this will be exposed to blowing rain/snow with chance of freezing water. Layers of natural slate will lift with hard freezes. Perhaps, with a super layer of sealer -- multi-layers, but...

Thankfully, no experience with that, as yet. However, i would seal-the-heck out of that slate, with that thought in mind, should you decide to put it down! Seal the tile, the grout and keep it up to par, always, resealing as the manufacturer suggests, at least.

Answer:
I'd say it's make a beautiful backsplash -- as you say, with UBER-sealer, however! You want to be able to clean this, not be a slave. Over time, the uneven layers, may accumulate "gunk", however ...something to consider.

CUSTOMER REVIEWS

Rated 2.6 out of 5 by 9 reviewers.
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Slate tile I expected a higher percentage of breakage than with most tile when ordering and it was a good thing. Of 16 boxes there was breakage in more than 50%. One box had only two unbroken tiles. The good folks at Home Depot were very understanding and made it all good, but it can effect your schedule if not planned for in advance. Also it is important to understand these slate tiles are irregular in thickness that will result in a uneven surface unless you use a very thick thinset application. Some tiles are 1/4 inch, others 3/4. The uneven surface was ok for my application as it was being installed in a new construction wine room and we wanted an old world look. January 20, 2015
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Good Looking Slate I bought this slate for a Fireplace surround and it worked well, looks good. The only issues I had were that the slate thickness was not consistent varying between 1/4 inch and 5/8ths. Also, of the 5 boxes I bought, an amount of slate equal to 1 box was broken when it arrived. 20% breakage seems a little high which is why the value is rated good. The stone itself has a nice look to it but be aware that there are a lot of black slate tiles included if you expect a more variegated look then you should buy more square footage just to make sure that the look is what you want. Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Poorly cut While beautiful now that it's in, the stone is not gauged as advertised. Stones were up to 1/2" different thickness. Over 75% of the boxes had broken stones. The stones were not properly cut to the pattern they were supposed to be. Cost me well over $3,000 in extra installation labor charges and more than four weeks additional time to my kitchen. Would NOT recommend! September 18, 2015
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Good product; bad shipping The product was a good value for the price; however, we had to return good deal of it several times because it was not packed properly and/or handled properly in shipping. The store made good on it each time, but it took several tries to get enough unbroken slate to complete the installation. Unles you're patiend, could not recommend , not because of the quality or price, but having to make multiple trips to exchange broken boxes. April 28, 2015
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Looks nothing like the online picture Very disappointed , the slate I recieved was nothing close to what was advertised. I expected a square for one they were not , they were very big rectangles we were not able to make it like the patchwork design that was pictured . The color , well there was none , it is regular boring slate. Not very good for a backsplash as advertised . I will use it outside to make a path March 17, 2015
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Gorgeous -- BUT, 3/4 BROKEN! This is gorgeous tile -- love the gauged, "kit" aspect -- HOWEVER, we ordered 4 cases and 3 arrived broken -- or, rather, we could "assemble" equivalent of one case out of the four! We will be re-ordering more -- this time,7 cases to try to gain equivalent of 4-5 cases worth to put down. Fingers crossed! It should look wonderful in the studio for which it's planned, but, these are heavy boxes, not easily just taken back to HD...Working out some sort of delivery to store, this time, where we'll open boxex there, not have delivered to home. PAIN -- better look great!! July 29, 2014
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Broken Tiles Never installed these tiles... The first order of tiles looked nothing like the picture. Very little color. It also contained two broken tiles, After contacting customer service, (the woman assisting us was very nice), two additional tiles were sent. BOTH were broken and the name and brand of tile was written on each tile in permanent ink! We ended up buying our tiles elsewhere. September 17, 2014
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Mixed Feelings Found one broken tile in one of two boxes. Luckily I need to cut some tiles so I can use the pieces for that. Colors are only barely represented by the online picture, and the thicknesses are not even between pieces and vary a lot. July 3, 2014
