Questions & Answers

What is distance from the ratchet wheel to Thank You pulley when fully extended 3ft or 6ft?

Asked by: tim
you must leave 2 turns on the drum at all times otherwise you could break the cable were it comes out of the drum.. so maybe 6 inches less than 6 feet.

The drum is unfinished cast aluminum. Hardware on the frame is 5/16 grade 5 bolts and nuts. On the hook and clevis, grade 8 hardware is used. The hooks are rated at 2 tons. The 4000 lb capacity is achieved by using a simple "gun tackle" system. This puller is actually the exact same one as the 2000 lb model but with the extra clevis, hook and hardware already attached. You can actually unbolt the gun tackle and use it as a standard puller. The 3/16" cable has a gross length of 12 feet. But some of that is used up by the attachment point on the drum, and for safety, the manufacturer requires 2 full wraps on the drum when under load. Here's actual distance measurements. Spooled fully out, it's 86" from hook to hook. That's a little over 7 feet. With 2 full wraps of cable on the drum, it's 76" hook to hook, or a bit over 6 feet - and you can put a full load on it at this point. Now the body is about 22 inches long, hook to hook, so your total net pull distance is 54 inches, or 4-1/2 feet. If we're talking *reach* then this is a 6 foot puller. If we're talking actual pull distance, then it's a 4.5 foot puller. The handle has a median length of about 16.5 inches. 1st wrap handle leverage 16.9:1, taking into account actual hand placement on the handle. That's an effective 33.8:1, better than advertised. That's a 60 lb pull on the handle to lift 4000 lbs. 3rd wrap handle leverage is 12:1, or 24:1 effective. That's about 82 lbs to lift 4000. Pretty good leverage! Operation is easy. There's a latch to make spool out a one-hand job. The levers let you back down the load one notch at a time using just the handle, and with one hand (no holding down a lever with the other hand, etc). In general it works smoothly and does the job. There's also supposedly an over-load device, but I could not figure out how it works - it's supposed to "release" the ratchet if you exceed 4000 lbs. This is not like the heavy old school pullers; it is light, and engineered to be "just" strong enough (with a safety factor) so it doesn't have the bulkiness. I bought it to straighten a tube frame, but have found a ton of other uses for it. Bottom line: it's light, compact, and it does the job. Oh and it's a great price.

The 4,000 lb. rating is laughable. The pot metal cable spindle broke on mine when pulling well below 4,000 lbs. I know this because the 800 lb rated cable this come-along was attached to was completely undamaged. If you buy this product, think of it as a 500 lb. come-along and you'll be fine. Mine will be returned to Home Depot today. It's a shame I have to stop working to return it.

When I got to the store to pick it up the unapologetic sales staff explained that it was not in stock, and that the stores inventory system is awful. This happens quite frequently at our store. I had to go to another competitors store. I ended up getting 2 since they were almost half the price as what I was going to pay at Home Depot.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Does what it says, and with a smile OK, if you need a solid comealong (and what homeowner doesn't?), this is a great unit. Bought mine a week ago to help with shrub removal, and I am quite pleased. First, throw away the instructions and figure it out by yourself. These directions are actually hilarious and cannot be understood. Second, get you some chain and get to work. This unit put up with maximum load in tough conditions for me. It pulled out shrubs that were actually small trees. Took every bit of its power, but it seemed to enjoy it!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from broken, but... The spool broke one day while I was using mine. It appears the cable was pinched and it split the side off. This left me stuck with tension on the cable and no way to unspool as everything jammed up. I finally got it undone using a pair of channel locks to wedge the pawl in place to let it back out. I was quite surprised and disappointed since no come along should explode when using the standard handle (no cheater pipe). I'm no that strong. that said, I think it was a fluke, and short of a $300 version, I don't think it can really be beat. I'll likely buy another.
