Customer Reviews

Smart Box 5-Gang Multi-Mount Adjustable Depth Device Box is rated 3.7 out of 5 by 6.
Rated 1 out of 5 by from I am very disappointed in the misleading description of this box. The product presents itself as ... I am very disappointed in the misleading description of this box. The product presents itself as adjustable. It is not, in any usable way, adjustable. The ear tabs molded onto the box prevent any adjustment (into the wall) as they would interfere with movement back because they will encounter the stud. Forward movement is impossible if the box is covered with drywall. Furthermore, the part of the box that can move (you see it in the factory photo with the three screws in it), gives about 3/16" of adjustment IF the ears are removed, but this is useless because it will not have enough grip to hold the box by itself (near the end of its 3/16" movement, it's about to fall out of the box). Had I known this, I'd have bought a set of metal boxes at much lower cost and ganged them together. Their single gang plastic boxes, which do not have the ears molded on, are sort of adjustable. But this box is not. I ended up putting the box in the wall that was still open (see photo, attached) using the ears. My photo shows how I mounted the box, including a homemade adjustment mechanism: adding old lathing behind the box's side ears so the finished depth equals the drywall and wall covering thickness (the wood bar above the box is drywall support). Next I'll remove the box, run wires into it, return the box to the wall and fasten it, then add the drywall and wall covering.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Didn't work for me Not enough inlets into the box, like 4 on the the 3 gang end, 2 top and 2 bottom

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Choice This was the only 5-gang box I could find that would work for old installation. Lots of snap-outs and optional configuration. Three built-in screws on one side and one on the other (on removable panels) provided flexible orientation, easy installation and strong foundation. It was a perfect fit with both the drywall behind and the brass switch plate in front. Shipping was quick and communicative.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent box for new construction or reno The box has multiple attachment points if you have the wall open and uses tabs to hold it in place if used you're popping it into finished drywall. The adjustable depth feature is sweet should you later decide to add wainscoting or tile. Check the manufacturer's website for a pdf of the box and for video clips.
