Is this the best option to add a box for light fixture on wall ( not ceiling).

Hello, I am upgrading bathroom light fixtures and there are no supporting boxs. There is a stud st opening. Is this my best option? Also, I will need to remove the wire tak that id right at opening to install this does this box have a wite clamp so its still code? If not what do you suggest? Thanks
Asked by: Travis
This box has the same Romex wire catches as any plastic electrical box. If I recall, it has about six of these one-way tabs that you break open and insert the wire into. Leaving the tab in prevents the wire from being pulled back out (per code). I used mine on the wall for a heavy black pipe fixture. While not specifically stated for (or not for) wall use, I found it is very sturdy in this position. Light fixtures will put some torque on the box when mounted on a wall, but most fixtures should be way under the 50 lbs rating and be fine.

having a problem mounting the ceilng fan bracket to the box

I am trying to replace a ceiling fan in a mobile home. I am not sure that the old smart box in my home is this box but it looks like it. I removed the old fan and its hanging bracket bracket from the smart box. I tried to install the new fans hanging bracket but the distance between the two closest mounting holes in the smart box appears to be too small to accommodate the hanging bracket so that the mounting bolts don’t go in easily since they are pressing against the new hanging bracket. Is it possible that the old mounting bracket was designed for a closer spacing of the mounting bolts than the new mounting bracket? I did manage the screw the bolts in almost all the way and started to hang the fan on the bracket and then the whole mounting box started to become detached form the ceiling and drop down. Do I need to remove the entire old smart box and replace it with a new one? Can i find out the distance between the mounting holes in your smart box to make sure it is compatible with the new hanging bracket?

Yes, in this case you should replace the old box, ideally with a box that has a bracket which spans or attaches to 2 ceiling joists. The problem is some mobile homes were made without real joists (knowledge from personal experience). The way I'm reading your question, you tried to hang a new fan in an old electrical box in a mobile home. It did not fit and you are wondering if the smartbox featured will fit the mounting bracket holes in your new fan. There are more factors to consider in this scenario than just the hole spacing, unfortunately. Since this is from a year ago, this answer is for clarity only. It would be a good idea to consult someone with some knowledge in this area to look at your specific scenario. Most homes are built with support beams, joists, or other framework spaced 12" or 16" apart, and rated by size and wood type to support a certain amount of weight per area. This may not be the case in a mobile home, or the wood may not be the standard strength or size for supporting a moving weight, like a ceiling fan. This product may or may not be enough to support the fan load you are adding. Check the support system in your ceiling. Then check the weight of the fan. This box is rated for supporting a 50 lb fan in framework that meets standard building code. Likely your old box resembles this one but lacks any additional strength, such as the L bracket included with this smartbox, and either was unable to support the added weight and failed, or it's not attached to enough support itself to keep from pulling loose when overweighted. Framework and wiring in older mobile homes can be very sketchy. Not every scenario is appropriate for a DIY attempt, especially when dealing with non-standard applications. Good luck!

I am going to install a ceiling fan in and outlet with no extra bracing. Does this box need that cross bracing?
Asked by: Jim
Yes. As the title indicates, the box is specially reinforced with metal to hold a fan or light up to 50 lbs. Instead of the typical over-the-top fan bracing that a metal fan box is screwed into thru the back, the three provided screws on the side of this box must screw into the side of a sturdy ceiling joist. Use an impact driver with a hex head bit to drive these large screws.

My project was to install a ceiling fan where there was a 4 foot florescent light. The wiring was there but no electrical box, and no easy access above the ceiling. I simply located the nearest ceiling joist, created a cut-out template from the box, mapped it against the ceiling, cut the hole out with a sheet rock saw, pulled the wire through the box, fitted the box into the ceiling so that it was properly recessed, and drove the three screws into the joist. Perfect!

This junction box is the perfect solution to installing a ceiling fan where none existed before. Attaches to the side of a rafter and will hold a 50 lb. plus ceiling fan with just a hole in your ceiling the size of the box.......no messing around with extension rods or springs, etc. unless you are so picky your box has to be exactly between the rafters. On my fourth fan install with these junction boxes.....two more to go outside under the patio cover.

This was exactly what I expected! it is very sturdy and clearly capable of holding an average fan. I removed an existing nail in ceiling box and replaced it with this smart box for a new ceiling fan on the porch. No damage to the sheetrock and really simple to install. (Use a flat pry bar or heavy screwdriver to pry the old box from the joist/stud.) The only part I wish was different is the mounting bracket location for the fan since it was at a 45° angle instead of 90°. For a flat ceiling this is not an issue but for a vaulted ceiling like we have, it means the fan bracket opening can't be turned fully towards the peak of the ceiling but has to stay at a 45°. This is NOT A BIG DEAL nor an issue, just something to consider. Make sure you have a good screw gun and a 3/8" driver when you install this. Hold the box flush to the sheetrock surface (edge of box is flush to the finish side of the sheetrock). it is very easy to install.

I needed something that will be sturdy and that I can attach directly to the stud. The product is of superb quality and works just great! Plastic is strong and well made and a metal plate below is super sturdy. I'm glad I found it. I wish this product will be on the shelf and not a special order.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from awesome This box doesn't look like much in the picture but it is quite substantial. It features a solid steel L-bracket which is secured to the structure with the 3 screws and two permanently secured bolts which hold the fan bracket. I haven't wired it up yet but I have no doubt that this will hold my fan securely.
