unit turns on then turns right off

Asked by: Anonymous
Check your circuits. I had this problem at the beginning too. I have a GFCI plug in my dining room (why?) and the circuit would constantly trip when the unit cycled on. I rectified this by purchasing a surge protector. They make them as singles (so you don't need a whole power strip if you don't have room). Plug the power cord of the freezer into your surge protector, then plug the surge protector into the wall. Voila! No more tripping :)

8.8 cu. ft. Upright Freezer in White is rated 2.2 out of 5 by 152.
Rated 1 out of 5 by from DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY!!!!! This freezer went COMPLETELY out in 9 months and MAGIC CHEF DOES NOT HONOR THEIR WARRANTY!!!!! Their customer service Reps (RAY & LEWIS) were/are very rude and could not understand why them sending out a refund for ONLY just the purchase price (no tax - meaning they were not even covering all of my costs for the defective unit) was not enough!!! I did not want their money, I only wanted a working freezer!!!! The freezer low quality anyway (PLEASE READ THE PREVIOUS REVIEWS) as it only worked for 9 months... And now I see that the overall Magic Chef Company is low qulaity too. PLEASE DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY OR YOUR TIME!!!!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Please Read all reviews, I didn't and regret it now I am happy to announce that I was able to get 3 years out of this freezer, but now she is dead. It was never the best freezer, the door didn't always seal so many times we came out the garage with dripping meat juice on the floor. This time we saw the same and assumed it was the same issue so we just closed it and left it another couple days to find that it had not been working for a while now. I tried a few things to fix it, the relay and capacitor, but it was a rabbit hole not worth entering. RIP freezer and thank you for teaching me to read reviews for future purchases!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Steer Clear Bought the freezer in July 2011. It worked fine for almost two years but then quit. Called a certified Magic Chef repair person who charged $85.00 to tell me that the freezer wasn't worth fixing because the labor would cost more than a new freezer. Said the freezer wasn't really a Magic Chef but that a Chinese company had paid for the rights to put Magic Chef on the label. Said the refrigerant leak wouldn't be covered anyway. I liked the size and the upright design, but if it can't be trusted, who needs it? Of course one the worse things is that a fair amount of garden produce was ruined.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Died after about 2 Years We purchase our freezer from Magic Chef about 2 years ago. It completely stopped working. Tried to get it going again on my own but had no luck. Very frustrating because we lost everything that was in the freezer. We didn't notice it until there was a puddle of water on our basement floor. Just from reading the other reviews, if you want a $350 freezer that is works for about a year, this is your freezer. If you want it around for longer than that, I would go with a different brand.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from WASTE OF MONEY Thought this would be the perfect size for retired family of 2. Our old freezer needed to be replaced, although it was still working fine. Didn't want to risk it quitting and loosing everything in it. We always purchase meets/veg/etc. when on sale and freeze it to save money. Purchased this freezer, and once set up, trasfered all contents from older one to our "New Freezer". After only 10 days, we discovered that it had STOPPED working, and all content was thawed and needed to be thrown out. Under the Freezer Warranty it states "Content losses due to failure of the unit" are NOT COVERED. I will never purchase a Magic Chef product again.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from DO NOT BUY!!! Two months ago I purchased this freezer, hoping that the reviews might be a bit harsh. Wrong choice! The negative reviews are right on key! Incident ONE: put a monthly SAMs club trips worth of frozen meats in the freezer on a Friday, on Saturday evening everything was thawed as the door was apparently not sealed appropriately. I have been around deep freezers my entire life, so I know to double-check that it is sealed. We were able to eat almost everything in a huge BBQ as things were still cool. Incident TWO: We left town for a four day weekend and the compressor went bad, leading to everything rotting. The smell was indescribable! Awful part- I'm 34 weeks pregnant and spent hours on consecutive days preparing freezers meals to help take some of the meal preparing burden off during the first month home with our new baby. The value lost is time, not just food, money and the freezer. Lets not forget the multiple roasts, and bulk seafood that we were counting on lasting us a while. My advice is simply: Do Not Waste Your Time With this product! I wish I would have used the same quality brands that I put in my kitchen )c:

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Poor Door Seal We purchased this freezer almost a year ago (so excited to finally own an upright freezer), and have found that the door does not close properly as the seal does not appear to be strong enough to self close. We blamed it on the weight of the food in the door, so tried removing everything from the door. We still had the same closure issue, so after throwing food out for the 3rd time yesterday I knew I had to write a review about this product. Hoping Magic Chef steps up on fixing the seal problem or removes this product from the shelf.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Compressor failed, no help Unit was purchased from a Home Depot store in April 2010. The compressor just failed on the unit 17 days after our 1 year full warranty was up. Magic Chef stated the compressor was covered for 5 years but we would have to ship the unit back, pay for the labor and then cover the shipping to get it back. Total cost, more than the original unit. Needless to say, Magic Chef is not in the running for our next freezer purchase, which will be from Lowes or Menards.
