Answer:
Yes that is exactly why I bought it. Make sure when you set it up that you mark the holes accurately this is not centered. If you don't do it accurately the hole for the bit will be off from the mounting holes.

Answer:
No, this router has a plastic base on the bottom so it can slide along the workpiece. If you want to plunge or use an offset base then you can buy the kit with these extra bases included. But this router can be used by itself without buying these other bases.

CUSTOMER REVIEWS

Rated 4.6 out of 5 by 27 reviewers.
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Compact and Powerful I highly recommend this product. Compact, powerful and comfortable for small projects (for example for make soft corners of wood countertop) April 12, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Exquisite Tool Bought the other comparable router at the same price point first because it came with the carry bag and had the tempting service agreement. Should have known I was paying for those things because the actual tool quality was pretty run-of-the-mill. I returned it and bought this router. Don't be fooled by the similar reviews when doing your comparisons. This Makita is a fine, meticulously crafted tool with plastic and metal in all the right places. It routes beautifully, is easy to assemble/disassemble for bit and accessory swaps and the bits don't get heat-stuck (as was the case with the other router). Many add-ons are available for this as well for different applications. If a carry bag is a must i'd recommend searching the web and spending the extra $15 or so for a small Makita bag or just use a generic tote. It's worth it. August 13, 2015
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Good unit-nice feel Good unit. Time will tell. Don't bother purchasing the dust collection adapter doesn't work at all February 23, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great Product Bought this to use in a router table I made its perfect for it. Easy to change bits very easy to adjust depth variable speed its perfect for home hobby wood working. February 16, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by This is a great light weight router This is a great feeling router. It's built really good and very responsive to the feel. July 14, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Nice little router Great little router. Nice power, easy start, and easy to change bits. The only things I wish it had are the plunge base (not available at HD) and a case. June 2, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by This is the best! I just picked this router up from home depot and all I can say is Wow! This unit is very powerful, and very refined. I have to say, the first time I turned this beauty on I was in disbelief with how quiet it is. After testing this unit out I feel that it is of very high quality. I have several Makita power tools. Some of them 15 years old or more and all working perfectly without any failures. Makita build tools that always have a feel and quality above all the rest. January 28, 2015
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Great power but can't use wide bits This is much more powerful than a standard trim router and very useful for doing edge treatments like small roundovers, beading, and trimming from a template using a flush trim bit. However there is one big issue - the plastic base has a 1-3/8" diameter hole so you can only use bits that are 1-1/4" in diameter or less. This limitation prevents you from using this router many standard bits, most notably a 45 degree chamfer bit. I found it also could not use most rabbeting bits, cove bits, ogee bits, and roundovers that are larger than 3/8". Makita does not include the dust chute attachment with this router, but Home Depot sells it online for just a few dollars - it is Makita model #195559-1. The website says it is made for the RT700 but it will also fit the RT701 perfectly. October 23, 2014
