Used this to put a roof on my large 16 x 12 shed. Went over the old shingles with no issues using 1 3/4 nails. Air at 110 psi with a 25 ft. hose. A little expensive but it feels and works like a quality tool.

Will work for the DIY as it's not commercial quality. Too many misfires (double nailing) and does not sink the nail flush even though the depth & p.s.i. it set correctly. The metal casting is irregular showing this was not made with quality in mind. When doing a complete roof would not recommend. But for patch or repair yes, as it's easier than hammering roofing nails with bare hands!

It arrived quickly and was well packed. Mine came from the factory in a box within a box within a box. Included accessories are safety glasses, lubricating oil and an air hose quick disconnect already installed.
The gun ships fully assembled and ready to load and connect to a compressor supplying dry, filtered air at 65-120 psi. The nail magazine holds a coil of 120 nails from 3/4" to 1-3/4". Like all other pneumatic tools this one requires a constant source of lubrication from an inline oiler or manual daily lubrication before and after using the tool. Two or three drops of the supplied oil through the air inlet will do the trick. The nails load easily and there's a small magnet that ensures the last nail in the coil feeds reliably. This gun features a belt clip, an adjustable shingle guide and a tool-less depth adjustment. The depth adjuster is a knurled knob that when turned clockwise increases the driven depth and counter clockwise to decrease. You can add additional adjustment by increasing or decreasing your compressor pressure.
Like my other roofing nailers this one can be single-fired by pressing down on the work piece and pulling the trigger or bump-fired by holding the trigger back and bumping the nose piece against the work. I normally run my compressor at 90 psi and at that pressure I was able to fine tune the nail depth with the built-in adjuster.
My other guns don't have a shingle guide and I don't foresee me using this one. I was taught to snap chalk lines and I find that method fast and accurate. I drove a half coil of one inch nails into a shingle over 3/4 inch plywood backing with no problems. To truly test its functionality I'll have to test it on my next roofing project which should happen in the fall.
By the way, I've found these nailers are useful for other projects besides roofing. I've used mine to install sheathing, new construction flanged windows and wallboard on ceilings. It's a very fast way to get a couple of nails into heavy ceiling boards proir to finishing the job with sheetrock screws.

Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by daj541 Terrible replacement for the AN451
I purchased one of these to augment my AN451 and found it could not sink nails while rapid firing. You had to hold the gun down on each nail and then hit the trigger to get them to sink most of the time. I returned it and got another new AN453 as a replacement and it functioned the same. Makita changed the internal design on this gun and it will not sink the nails. I bought a used AN451 and it works perfectly. This is really a shame as I own thousands of dollars in Makita tools and all but this new roofing nailer work great.
