CUSTOMER REVIEWS

Rated 4.5 out of 5 by 2 reviewers.
Rated 5 out of 5 by Makita Makes the best Manly Hammer Drills I spent awhile looking for ideas to reface the large stone fireplace built in 1955. My wife never liked it and I had the time so I said I do it. The problem was I was afraid if I used a sledge I would damage the fire box and or chimney bricks. I had a 7 amp 7 pound Bosch SDS Rotary Hammer drill I used to drill hole in a concrete porch and cinder block fences. I figured I could chip away the mortar around the stones and loosening them. I did this and after about an hour I was able to get one stone to fall. But I had to use a 10 pound sledge to finish it off before it would fall. I got time but I got a life also. After more research I realized there a whole bunch of man size hammer drills that might make the difference. I also studied the difference between SDS, SDS Max and Spline chucks. SDS is a girly size; SDS Max and Spline are the ones you need for serious work. Bosch, Milwaukie and Makita make many good man-size Hammer drills. After some brief experimenting I decided that the Spline bit seemed more solid the SDS Max and I paid $400 for a Makita HR4041C with a Bosch Spline chisel. This baby cut through the mortar and rock like butter. In a half hour I had removed 1000 pound of rock and mortar without needing a sledge. The HR4021C Spline Hammer worked better than a $800 SDS Hammer I had rented from Home Depot. Note the hearth is covered with a canvas. The stones weigh between 20 and 40 pounds July 23, 2014
