Can this saw cut through a 2" x 12" at 90 degrees?

Asked by: Moose
No. The Makita 15 Amp 12 in. Compound Miter Saw (LS1221) has a cutting capacity of 2-1/2” x 8” at 90°. For larger cross-cutting capacity, we would suggest a dual slide compound miter saw (Makita models LS1016L, LS1216L).

FWW reviewed this product and gave it a good review. The con was that the pivoting table was not level (flat) with the ends. Is this a design flaw?

Or did Fine woodworking (FWW) get a bad saw that got through quality control. I want to buy this for its accuracy and light weight but if the table is not flat, it will not work for me. No one in the area carries this saw for me to check. Thanks
Asked by: NukeWW
The pivoting table is always suppose to be ever so slightly elevated above the flat ends. its for a reason. I'm surprised in the reviews they didn't explain why. its is necessary when you are holding on to the piece of wood that you are going to use in either your left or right hand that the cut off piece have the ability to fall away from the blade with minimal chance of a kickback. if they were both flush this could produce a injury to you and your saw.

Is the button on the handle a safety button that you need to press on every cut ? This is the only saw that I have seen with a button on the handle.

Thank you for your question. Yes, the lock-off button on the handle of the LS1221 must be activated to operate the saw. Please see your instruction manual for proper use. With your quality control procedures, if a straight edge is placed across the table ends, what is the maximum distance from flat allowed?

Asked by: NukeWW
The maximum distance from flat allowed for the 12 in. Compound Miter Saw (LS1221) meets or exceeds the industry standard, or other manufactures.

Is this dual bevel? Also is there a laser on it?

Asked by: Anonymous
The LS1221” Compound Miter Saw has a pivoting fence for cutting up to 5-1/2” Crown Molding (nested) and a 6” cutting capacity at 90°. The saw is a single bevel (45° left) and does not have a laser. If you require double bevel capacity and a laser as standard equipment, we suggest our LS1016L or LS1216L Dual Slide Compound Miter Saws. Both saws have dual bevel capacity (45° left or right) and they both come standard with an adjustable laser.

I can't speak to the longevity of this saw nor can I compare it to similar saws. I've only had it for a few weeks and I haven't used every other chop saw out there. What I can say, as a lifelong woodworker and someone familiar with woodworking tools, is that this saw has a fine fit and finish and a feel of quality. The saw is comparitively light weight, but seems very smooth and accurate and sturdy. I was amazed at the smooth cut surface left by the blade that came installed on the saw. So far, I really like this saw and I'm guessing I'll like it more and more as I use it more. I'd buy it again.

However the means to adjust it is painstaking. The fence is held by 4 bolts. Once the fence is square, to tighten the fence, it moves. It took about 3 hrs of trial and error to make it perfect. Otherwise great!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Not perfect, but the best I've found out of 4 others I owned 2 DeWalt's, a Bosch, and the Delta miter saws and ended my quest when I found this one. If you are into carpentry work just about ANY saw will suit your needs, but if your into fine, near perfect square cuts, look no further. The DeWalt's couldn't come close to square cuts, the Bosch was nice but inaccurate, the Delta was close but pinched your fingers when doing miters. I decided to try the Makita and was pleased more with it than all the above mentioned. Today's saws are usually dual compound miters, which are fine for carpentry work, but if your after hair line cuts that are just about "dead-on" this is about the best you"ll find. I had mine for 10 yrs and the brake went up on me the other night, I sent it for repair and then went to my local Home Depot to purchase another....... "This saw is that good." I build furniture (where joinery is critical) and nothing so far has come close in terms of near perfect square cuts. If you can find a miter saw that doesn't compound (this does to ONE side) you may have found a more accurate saw, but till then, look no further! And I'll gladly own 2 when my other is repaired

Rated 5 out of 5 by from old reliable I own a cabinetmaking business and I have a home that I have added on to and a workshop that I built myself and this saw was used whenever I needed a miter saw. It came out of the box in perfect adjustment and I have never had to readjust the settings. I have made thousands of cuts with it and it has been loaded in and out of the truck more times than I can count. I am very picky when it comes to tools, a good tool will pay for itself many times over and a bad tool will ruin your day and take money out of your pocket. I don't know if I got the best one of these saws ever manufactured but I love this saw because it has never given me a problem nor let me down. And yes, you can do fine trim and finish carpentry with a single bevel saw.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Another Great Makita Product The saw was packaged very well. Took only a few minutes to extract from the box, and make some sample miters. It's a pleasure the way in jumps into the 45 degree slots, and the cuts are true. I've fiddled with squares and triangles on my other two miter saws and have never had results this good. This is my fifth Makita product, and it appears that it's going to continue the tradition.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Makita makes great saws and provides nice blades too Got this to replace a Ridgid 12" slider that was OK but took up too much space, My most used material is 1"x 6" which this saw can cut 3 at a time with ease. Also have a 10" Makita that I really like which is why I decided to try this 12" one. Both saws came with fine blades which is also a plus. There is something about these saws that is hard to describe other than to say they just feel right for me.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The Makita 12 in-dual compound miter saw performance I have been a finish carpenter for over 42 years and run my own business for over 14 years now. i have built everything from small production homes to high end custom homes all over north east Ohio. and with all this talk of bad economy i have yet to see a slow down in my particular field. I have used numerous brands of tools over the years. I'm not going to waste time on any of the tools that claim to be the best in price or quality. I have tried them ALL and i can be pretty rough on my tools sometimes. But my best results in every project I've undertaken no matter how small has turned out extremely successful only because of the quality of my tools the Makita 12 in. compound miter saws along with many other Makita tools make my job a lot easier. I have experimented from time to time with others and i always come back to the best. thank you.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Very disappointed in Makita If you are a carpenter doing fine wood working like crown molding cabinetry and stair railings you won't like this saw. It does not cut true. The base is not true to the saw and the fence is a joke. Thought maybe I got a bad one sent it back and the new one is the same. If your a trim carpenter it would be OK but it won't cut very tall, Most 12" saws do a lot better .sorry makita your no longer the best.
