What are the MINIMUM length, width and thickness for boards being planed by the Makita 2012NB Thickness Planer?

Asked by: Woodguy
You can take strips of wood down to .5 mm BUT, you have to place it on a thicker and longer board first and run both through together. You know you have gotten to your limit when the piece you are planing disappears into the dust collector.

Wher do you purchase the dust hood and how much does it cost.

Asked by: Tina
I got mine from Home Depot online, I have also seen them on Amazon. About $25 and in my opinion it should be included.

15 Amp 12 in. Corded Portable Planer is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 48.

So, this is my first and I bought it because of the good reviews and the lack of snipe that the reviews mentioned. I have found it to work as represented. Very little if any snipe and it did a great job on my 2x4s, Maple and Walnut. I do have one major complaint. The instructions are terrible. If you know what you are doing I suppose you do not need them. But I need them. I posted a question on this site and Makita told me to call them. I called them and they told me they could not help me unless they met with me in person. I live in CA and they are in GA. I asked for instructional videos and Makita has none. If there was a way to give me a better idea how to use this and plane wood to an even thickness my rating would go up. But, Makita's lack of instruction and terrible manual (for me) really take away from an otherwise very good product.

I had a Delta bench top planer that served me well over 20 years before giving up and having owned a number of Makita tools I have always been impressed with their quality. I have two disappointments. 1)Dust collection is poor. I have it setup to a professional dust collection system and other then the Makita 3" ducting is exactly how my previous planer was setup. It throws a amazing amount of chips out of the infeed side. 2) Snipe, while all planers have some amount, this one has significantly more then my previous. The planer is quieter then my Delta, but not by a measurable amount.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very well made machine The good: -Quite operation -Included folding in feed/out feed tables. -Very little snipe. 2-1/2 inches on the in feed, zero on the out feed for mine. Took about 15 seconds with 80 grit to clean it off. -Very smooth finish -Compact, and ready to go out of the box. The not so good: -The 3 inch, hard to find dust hood needs to be included. Finding adapters to fit it to your vacuum or D.E. will take some hunting. Overall I am very pleased with the performance of this machine and at about $60.00 less than the other top rated planer that begins with a 'D' and colored yellow, it's also a better buy. -Aaron

I truly love it. Low noise. Very clean finished surface. I've put only about 150 board feet through it. I only remove 1/32 to 1/16th inch at a time. Slight snipe. I plan to build a work station with infeed / outfeed tables for long boards, but the built in ones handle material at least 18in and maybe longer. It weighs just over 60 lbs which is fine for me.
