I would like to buy a Makita sliding miter saw for my shop in the basement. I'm not sure which one to buy? It will be staying in one spot and not be moved around and used on home improvments and furniture making. Any advice?

Answer:
I recently purchased the Makita 12" dual sliding miter saw from Home Depot and thus far have not noticed any wobble during cross cutting oak boards up to 8" in width. I have not used it to cut any bevels as yet but I have made 45 degree cuts without any wobble. The slide mechanism on this saw has worked very smoothly thus far.

Answer:
I have noticed no arbor run-out in my saw. However, any wobble could be the result of the blade not being the best. Professional blades (Freud, Forrest, etc.) will always run more true than stock blades. However, the stock 12" on the Makita seems pretty good so far

Hello toolman77, I’m Newf from the Home Depot’s how-to Community. Thank you for your question.
The difference between the 2 saws you mention is not wobble, but cutting capacity.
Pick the saw that will handle the largest wood you expect to cut.
I hope this helps,
Newf.

Customer Reviews

Rated 4.2 out of 5 by 29 reviewers.
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Really impressed I was a little nervous in buying this saw as the reviews have been hit or miss. But as I like Makita products and Home Depot has a good return policy I decided to buy it. Ordered it on Friday evening and received it Tuesday afternoon. I was wanting to replace my radial arm saw that I rarely used with something that is a little more compact and has less of a footprint, making it easier to move the mobile equipment in my limited shop space. This Makita miter saw is going to do just fine. Note that this is a big saw. It is on the upper end of what I would call portable. It is cumbersome to carry and weighs over 50 #. But as I am not planning on moving it much so that shouldn't be a problem for me. However be aware that big means it will not just slide onto an existing miter saw bench. Especially if you have it against the wall. My bench tops are 27" and the base of this thing needed to hang over 5-6" in order to clear the wall. The full arm extension is over 40" from the wall! This means that any existing miter stations with fence/top extensions will need to be rethought. I did mount the saw on a Ryobi portable miter saw stand that I had and it fit acceptably. For the shop I built a removable wing extension off the front of my bench to mount the saw. Marked and drilled the mounting holes, used T nuts under the counter and the wing extension. Now it can be bolted it down fairly quickly or removed it if I need to. The other modification will be moving your table and fence extensions so the work material isn't dangling off the front of your bench. Remember that this thing can cross cut boards 15+" wide! I borrowed the design from my portable stand. Mounted a piece of square steel tube under the bench with a1/2" clearance between it and the bench top. Moved the portable stands material support assembly to this rail and was in business. This saws performance is remarkable. I was able to crosscut a piece of 4x6 with no difficulty. Also able to cross cut a piece of 3x7 Ipe with no appreciable bogging down of the motor, Also cut a a 2v12 at a 45 with a little room to spare. Despite other reviews. the saw arrived in fairly good alignment. Did a few little adjustments and now it is cutting like a dream. Perfectly square crosscuts and the 45 is dead on. So far the settings are holding with no need for re-adjustment. A big bonus is the saw has a depth of cut adjustment so that dados can be cut. One feature that isn't mentioned in the specs anywhere is that the arbor of the saw is not a true 1" arbor. Instead it is a 5/8" arbor bushed out to 1". SO 10" saw blades can be used. Good if you are going to cut some fine veneer or other thin stock and don't want to buy a new blade. Note that when I tried it, a temporary fence had to be put in front of the original fence. A piece of 3/4" plywood attached to the existing fence seemed to work just fine. You also need to increase the saws travel on the slide bars, but the saw comes with a built in adjustment ability. I did not try the dust collection bag, instead hooked it up to the shop's dust collection system with a 2-1/2" hose. This seems to be working acceptably. As everything seems to be working as advertised I haven;t had a need to contact Makita's customer support. All in all this has been a very good purchase. A great saw, delivered faster than I expected and at a decent price August 29, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Best saw on the market I as always am pleased with Makita products but was kind of disappointed that I had to order this online because they don't carry it on the shelves anymore. September 6, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by great tool Accurate out of box, no major adjustments necessary. The dual slide, laser and previous experience with Makita quality are what sold me. I am very happy with this after 6+ months of use. The dual slide glides effortlessly and the quality of cut is perfect. Soft start elimnates any jump what so ever. Great ergonomics and control throughout the cut. The miter adjustment is solid, quick and easy to use and holds dead on between increments when released (tightened). All in all a great feel and quality tool, I purchased the job site stand with it, couldn't imagine moving around shop without it mounted to stand heavy and bulky to move without the stand. Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by The Makita LS1216L Dual Slide Compound Miter Saw is fantastic I recently added the Makita LS1216L 12-Inch Dual Sliding Compound Miter Saw to my collection of great tools. Three years ago I bought the LS1016 and I soon stopped using my radial arm saw. A month ago, I decided to sell my radial arm saw and get the LS1216L. With two Dual Sliding Compound Miter Saw's I am extremely efficient. I am a home owner doing a home renovation project including crown molding on built-in cabinets and the door and window trim. With the 2 I can set each Compound Miter Saw to the cut I need and get the job done at a fraction of the time. The Makita LS1216L and LS1016L are both very easy to use and accurate. December 25, 2012
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Saw worked great after minor alignment adjustments My Makita dual slide saw has worked great so far. I've been using it to cross-cut oak for two Morris style chairs I'm building and with it's laser has made the cuts very easy to line up. One of the saw fences was slightly damaged in shipping which I reported to Home Depot and they contacted Makita which provided a new replacement fence part by mail within two weeks. Excellant service by both companies. Overall I'm very happy with this saws power and ability to cut multiple angles quickly. The only complaint would be with the provided manual which I found to be small and contained way to much material on safety instructions rather then concentrating on saw operation. Great product March 13, 2014
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great Saw Easy to use and well built this saw arrived and was accurate right out of the box. Its bulky for a traveling saw but it is a 12" slide so what can you say! Otherwise the laser having the ability to switch from one side of the blade to the other is a great feature just wish the know was a wing nut or was easier to turn with the bare hand as it can be difficult to loosen to change sides. Otherwise love the saw! December 4, 2012
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Have not used yet. Makita has never let me down but I have not used yet. I own about 12 different Makita power tools with no problems. January 19, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Overall a great saw with some issues. I did a lot of research for weeks and drove all over to get test out almost every saw on the market. To be clear every single saw, aside from the $1400 Kapex, appears to have some issues. The Dewalt has terrible slides and durability problems , the bosch axial glide has arbour problems ,no laser, and a rough motor, The Jet has the capacity of a 10 inch, the Hitachi has to much flex in the head, and this Makita here comes terribly setup from the factory, and the instructions on how to set it up are equally as bad. Seriously I don't even think they really attempted to set these up at all, which wouldn't be too bad if they gave good instructions on how to do it yourself...but they didn't. Now that said it has great capacity, a very high quality motor, high quality slides, and all of the major features you could ask for. It does have it's issues, but unlike most of those other saws they can be fixed with some time and patience. Spend a little time with it, make all of the adjustments CORRECTLY, and you'll have a great saw. January 4, 2016
