The Makita 18-Volt LXT Lithium-Ion 3.0Ah Battery (2-Pack) charges faster and works longer than standard lithium-ion batteries, giving your cordless tools unmatched performance and productivity to take on the most demanding applications. The battery has a category-leading charge time of only 30 minutes, so it spends more time working and less time sitting on the charger, and also resists self-discharge so it's ready for use even after long periods of storage. It works with the Makita Rapid Optimum Charger (sold separately), a smart-charging system that communicates with the battery during the charging process to monitor current, voltage and temperature, which helps optimize battery life and deliver a faster charge. The charger also has a built-in fan to cool the battery for faster and more efficient charging, even in hot weather conditions. In addition, Makita's STAR Protection Computer Controls allow the tool and battery to exchange data in real time and monitor conditions during use to protect against overloading, over-discharging and overheating.

I'm wondering whether this is the newer generation of the Makita battery, denoted by a large embossed star on the top of the battery and a printed star on the label (near the recycle cicrle) on the bottom of the battery. Please let me know. Grant

Grant, while the battery may be of the newest type, it's really the tool that matters most. The 1830 3 Amp batteries are the only ones that will work with tools that do not have a yellow battery receptacle or the large star logo on the battery receiver. This is meant to provide people with older Makita tools some legacy support, but it can lead to trouble for the users.

If you use these batteries with tools that have neither the large star logo nor the yellow battery seat, you need to exercise caution. These tools will not throttle output when the battery overheats, potentially leading to permanent battery damage. Makita has never explained this properly to consumers, so you'll see a lot of negative comments about these batteries burning out. Read Less

Yes! The 1830 will give a longer usable charge than the 1815. The 1830 weighs a bit more but the trade off is worth it!

Hi Robert, yes the Makita 1830 will work in place of a compact battery 1815.
Matika states the 1815 will not work on a tool that requires a full size 3.0ah battery.

Answer:
Yes, you can purchase just one. In fact, the model number for a single battery is BL1830. The model number BL1830-2 indicates that the package contains two of the BL1830 batteries. However, you'll pay much more for your battery if you buy just one. A single battery runs about $100 while the package of two is around $160.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Makita Battery Pack I bought these batteries on sale for $99.00 on line. Home Depot took the order, took my money and then 2 days later refunded my money without any explanation and cancelled my order. When I looked for the battery pack on line, I discovered it was now on sale for $129.00 Luckily I went into the store and explained everything, they honored the original price. It was only after a long time consuming process. Makita drills and batteries are the absolute best. Amazing product, worth the hassle. July 19, 2016

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Makita 18v 3.0ah batteries (2-pack) I bought these batteries recently because they were on sale for $100 for two and my original batteries are over 8 years old. They are still working well enough but are slowing down after countless charging cycles so I decided to replace them. Great batteries! July 12, 2016
