Answer:
No, this tool does not have variable speed. However, the Makita GD0800C does have variable speed along with several other innovative features including SJS. Super Joint System (SJS) technology helps prevent gear damage caused by accidental wheel binding.

Answer:
For a 1/8" bit, I would use a smaller tool like a Dremel. Die grinders are heavy and it can be challenging doing fine work with a 1/8" size shank and such a large tool..

Answer:
The shaft size of burs and bits can change depending on the job and the 'load' placed on the tool. It's handy to be able to replace the collet so that the tool is more versatile and can use a wider variety of burs and bits.

Customer Reviews

Rated 4.4 out of 5 by 13 reviewers.
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Die Grinder An excellent tool which I use for carving. It has all of the necessary power and torque. I own several of them and they are all excellent tools. March 22, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by good tool very happy have had other brand die grinders for cheaper price and they did not last long this one is so much better very good tool March 22, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by light weight and easy to use I purchased the Makita Die Grinder to use for detail work on my chain saw carving hobby. My hope was that the Makita Die Grinder would help with detailing the facial features on my carvings. The Makita Die Grinder did not disappoint me, works as advertised. Quiet operation, light weight, easy to handle and a really nice feature is the rubberized nose for gripping. I would definitely recommend the Makita brand to a friend. April 19, 2013
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Heats up under continuous use on soft wood and foam I bought this grinder to use for carving duck decoys. I was disappointed to find that it gets too hot to hold after several minutes at full speed when carving pine and even foam. I thought maybe there was a problem with the variable speed foot pedal I was using, but it also heats up when plugged straight into the wall outlet. The low price and good reviews got me to buy it, but be warned - apparently they don't all work great. Maybe I got a bad one. My dad's grinder (many years old and a different brand) only heated up when the brushes were really worn down. July 11, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great die grinder This grinder replaces one I finally wore out polishing corvette parts off my vettes. It took a long time to wear out so I'm sure this one will last just as long! August 19, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Powerhouse of a grinder Purchased this die grinder to replace a craftsman dual insulated Die Grinder that I have had for 20 years. The craftsman was terrible with carbide bits, it would chatter and break of the heads. The Mikita is well balanced, easy to hold and I like the power switch position and operation. It was a great purchase andI like Mikita tools. July 8, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Happy with your product. The die grinder and disk grinder i bought works like a champ lots of power while using them on steel brackets and other mods to my 1970 dart project. I found your price to beat others hands down and the Quality is just wonderful. I wish i had a picture of me working on my car but i already did some work i needed for now in ca. more to do when it get's warmer. I just moved from palm springs area to east Tenn. and it's to cold(28 degrees to 40) to do any thing here at this time maybe in the spring sorry. December 18, 2014
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Die Grinder A little heavy, but far greater quality than the cheap stuff you get from Harbor Freight (the previous one died after three one hour-long uses). May 12, 2015
