Is this sander sufficent/pwerful enough for removing paint on a redwood deck?

I am sanding a redwood deck to bare wood with 60 grit sand paper. Will this sander easily handle the job? The deck is very large. This sander is called a finishing sander vs. a disc sander. Can it do the job or will I be sanding forever with it? Previous orbital sanders have done the job but they were called a disc sanders & had repeated problems with the hook & loop holding the sandpaper. Had to return 3 sanders already within a hours of use.

NOTE: My sanding experience is extensive but have used only 2 brands of sanders. I cannot use a belt sander because it gives me tennis elbow in just a few minutes.

Answer:
Without knowing the dimensions of your deck, it is difficult to determine if the Makita 5 in. Random Orbit Sander, with Variable Speed (BO5040K) will be the most efficient option. The performance of the backing pad will vary dependent on the application, and how often you replace the paper. The more often you change the paper, the longer the backing pad will last.

How long does the hook & loop sanding disc (not the paper) last?

I have bought 4 orbital sanders (different brand) in less than 3 month. ALL have died in just 1-1/2 to 3 hours use due to the hook & loop disc - the paper just goes flying off the disc. Does the Makita do this? I do not want to have to return this one too. I have a job to do NOW. I am sanding with 60 grit paper on a painted redwood deck to the bare wood.

With the proper instillation, the paper should stay on the pad. Please change the pad as frequently as possible for the best performance.

Rated 4.8 out of 5 by 19 reviewers.
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great sander I have owned other sanders, but wanted a random orbital sander. I went to Home Depot and held the various samples and this sander felt the best with a good price. It has not disappointed me. Does a great job and the dust collector is amazing! July 12, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Reliable very good sander. Very glad I got this sander to do my little project at my house. June 7, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Makita 3-amp 5" orbital sounder Light weight, works well. Price was right Home Depot had it at my door in two days I'm happy! December 8, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by A positive replacement This sander replaced a Porter Cable sander that was never as good as this one. In fact I merely tolerated it for several years even though it was a poor performer. I really didn't want to spend the money, but when it stopped working I had no choice. I haven't used the Makita too much yet, but when I have it's easy to tell that it's a quality product. While it is relatively light weight and easy to use (with the adjustable handle) it really gets the job done. Hopefully it will continue for years to come August 4, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Orbit Sander This sander was easy to assemble. It is light weight but powerful as a sander. I used with course grain sand paper it to removed old paint from the boards on a patio deck. The bag to catch the dust from sanding is adequate but I wish it was larger. September 1, 2015
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Nice quality Sander. I have been using The 3-AMP 5 IN. RANDOM ORBIT SANDER WITH VARIABLE SPEED (TOOL-CASE) extensively since it arrived and I have enjoyed using it as it works very well. Easy on the comfort and it fits my large hands nicely. I would certainly buy again. It is costly and I will give the "value" a higher rating if it lasts me for several years, which is why I paid a higher premium price. September 15, 2015
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by What? Not even one sheet of sandpaper to try it????? I got this on a Black Friday special. Didn't need it now, but will later. As I approached the 90 day return date I figured I better try it SOON. So I opened it, looked again & again, called...and guess what.....They don't include any sandpaper! That's real cheap. I am usually impressed with Makita products, but that's just not right. I did try it. It seams to work ok. Good weight and fit compared to others I picked up in my hand, so.....I kept it. Just thought that was lousy, not including maybe 1-5 sheets with it. That would probably set back the company about 75 cents. But reviews like this....may cost a tad more! March 21, 2014
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Makita 5in orbital sander I have only had it for a few weeks but so far it has performed flawlessly. It's comfortable, powerful, and the dust bag works fairly well. I have stripped and refinished one dresser and am working on remodeling one of the bedrooms in my home. It took awhile to get to Home Depot, however once there, I was able to pick it up very quickly.
