Customer Questions & Answers

Is the side handle removable?

Is the side handle removable?
Asked by: AVC
Yes. The side handle is removable. And with my current model purchased last month the handle is changeable for left to right. The same model I had back in the 90's was only available to be placed on the left. Have fun. Just keep a tight grip wherever the handle is.

Does this sander use discs with the common 7/8 inch hole diameter in the middle? Or does it ONLY use specialized discs, available ONLY from Makita?

Asked by: zwoof
Yes. I currently have discs made by Diablo, Ace hardware and dewalt. the hard discs are better than the softer ones but make sure they are the 5 inch diameter. four and four 1/2 do not work well with this plastic disc.

Is this a good sander to use on a hail damaged redwood deck?

If so, what type of attachment should I use? I'll be doing this myself and it's a pretty big deck, so I'm looking for something lightweight but powerful. Thank you!
Asked by: SusanaMusic
Yes but use caution. I would use an orbital sander after the disk sander to smooth the wood some more

It was stolen and very hard to find to replace. With one or two upgrades this is the exact same unit it always was. I highly recommend it for it's size and power. I use it primarily for lawn mower blades and other heavy grinding. I love the ease of changing discs. A little pricey for it's size but worth the money it you need it. Very happy homedepot still carries it. ( although not in my local stores)

Rated 5 out of 5 by from only one of its kind This is the updated version of the makita 5" disk sander. I've used this sander for 15 years, with 6" fiber backed disks. Works great for moderate to heavy sanding of wood, paint feathering of peeling, and even for sharpening lawnmower blades.
