Is this a good sander to use on a hail damaged redwood deck?

If so, what type of attachment should I use? I'll be doing this myself and it's a pretty big deck, so I'm looking for something lightweight but powerful. Thank you!

Answer:
Yes but use caution. I would use an orbital sander after the disk sander to smooth the wood some more

Answer:
The primary application for the Makita 5" Disc Sander (GV5010 )is removing or stripping old paint; however, the recommended tool for your application is the Makita 4" x 24" Belt Sander (9403).

Thank you for your question.
For using dry pads YES.
I've personally used it with 3000 diamond granite pads and it work really nice.Keep in mind though that its not recommended for wet sanding and polishing.
Hope this helps.

Answer:
Hi Shawn,
This sander is not designed for automotive use and will scratch the metal, resulting in a lot additional body work to remove or cover up the scratches. You need a dual action random orbit sander for auto body use.

Rated 4.2 out of 5 by 10 reviewers.
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Very effective for job very good tool. Powerful and easy to use. Would have liked it to have hook & lock discs. July 12, 2016
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Not the most powerful method of removing paint from deck railings I was trying to figure out the best way to efficiently remove old paint from my deck railing and vertical posts. I bought this item and an adaptor for my Dewalt, 4 and 1/2 inch grinder. For a hard pressure treated post or rail, this 4.2 Amp 5 In. Corded Disc Sander just didn't match up with the powerful Dewalt Grinder with the sand attachment. So, I don't recommend it for that reason - not powerful and fast enough. It certainly will work, but it will take two times the time to finish this project. June 28, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Makita sander From a scale from one to ten I give this tools a ten April 19, 2016
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Only OK, not great Used for exterior paint stripping. On one the button that allows you run the sander without holding the trigger stopped working. On another the hex head screw that holds the disc jammed? This was in a one week time span. July 29, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Its a work horse I am a painting contractor, I have used this sander for years on exterior fascia and rough cut exterior trim. I've bought one 13 yrs ago and still use it. I can buy the black plastic disk backing when they break or chip. I can also use a tap and dye to remove the Allen nut that holds the disks if it gets stripped from your workers not being careful and stripping it out. Awesome tool. November 17, 2014
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Only sander weight less than 3 lbs Good for exterior sanding only, sander design like a drill give good balance in your hand and less fatigue ,weight 2.6lbs. Only one speed, sanding disc break easy, 5" sand paper hard to find at other hardware store, online order from Home Depot takes more than two weeks. I saw lots of painter using this Makita drill sander, sanding with one hand up in the ladder, price $99 is high. Less arm fatigue is the main reason I bought it. December 24, 2013
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Very NIce Sander With its 4500 rpm, it is a workhorse. I work for a stone restoration company and I use it and abuse it every day and cant imagine my work without it. The only two negative things is that it need a Dust Shroud and it has no Variable Speed November 16, 2013
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by only one of its kind This is the updated version of the makita 5" disk sander. I've used this sander for 15 years, with 6" fiber backed disks. Works great for moderate to heavy sanding of wood, paint feathering of peeling, and even for sharpening lawnmower blades. July 31, 2013
