I have had 3 belt sanders over 15 years. Each time I took a step up. Wish I would have started with this one. I recently made a large table and only had to stop leveling it to move around the table and empty dust bag. A really excellent product. Very quiet too. I recommend to all at any experience level.

Bought this sander for the purpose of refinishing a 20+ year old deck. I tried several belts, and the Shopsmith 36 grit ceramic from Lowe's took the abuse the best, followed by an 80 grit to smooth up. I ran the sander almost continually for 2 -3 hours at a time, only stopping to empty the bag or to take a break myself. Very pleased.

Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Lowry A great sander!
I've run this sander about seven hours, almost constant. The ergonomics are great. I especially like that it is not top heavy like the old Porter Cables. I have run belt sanders for a lot of years (both in the building trades and as a woodworker) and this tool impresses me as well designed. I did not use the dust collector, but hooked it to my shop vac and was pleased that it did so well in catching the dust. With a forty grit belt this baby will really move some wood. I would not buy the one with fewer amps as with a coarse belt one can overload this one, if you push down. (Which you are not supposed to do.) As to quiet? You need ear plugs. I think getting one of these for bigger jobs, and then the Porter Cable tiny one is a good combo, better than buying one 3 x 21 sander, if you can afford it. But both of these sanders have a weak spring for the belt adjustment. Bump it and it turns, sending the belt off track. So, it may take getting a heavier spring, no big deal. The four stars is because of that. But also, I ordered it online from HD, had it sent to my house to arrive just before a big project. But it arrived used. No kidding, you could look into it and see sawdust down inside it. I examined the platen and could tell it had little use and as I needed it, I did not return it for a new one. So, understand that HD may send you a used one, just like Amazon. However, with Amazon many report missing pieces and defects and this one was fine. I do appreciate that we can return these to the local store for returns. BUT, it only seems fair that one can choose....new, or "demo", and get a five dollar discount or whatever for it being used.

I ordered this online with free shipping and a $20 discount too. It arrived on time via UPS without any dings or scratch. The motor is not loud compare to other expensive branded sander on the shelves today. The weight is perfect and is also easy to manuver clockwise and counter clockwise it depends on how you use it. But the most important thing for me is this Makita sander is not made in china, this is made in UK! Lol. I hate junk made in china! Lol.

I have used this belt sander at work for years now. There is nothing that comes close. I have been watching Home Depot's availability for several months, and it's concerning that it hasn't been made available. If I'm making an investment in a tool of this nature for myself, I want to buy it from a provider who offers the customer satisfaction found at Home Depot. I hope Home Depot will acquire this item as soon as possible. I really don't want to buy any where else..

I looked at belt sanders for several months off and on before purchasing this belt sander. I am one who reads reviews of tools before I buy, taking into consideration the thoughts and experience of those who purchased this sander before me, before I made my purchase. I have to say this belt sander has plenty of power, is smooth sanding, whether using super coarse 36 grit up to 100 grip belts. It really does an incredible job! If you read the reviews on the Porter Cable sanders, you will find four issues described by several users with them. Those include bad dust collection because of the type of connection used to connect the bag to the sander, a double spring clip, the platten overheating and warping causing gouges in the wood, inboard mounted bearings directly in the path of dust, etc. Porter Cable no longer manufactures quality industrial tools, rather choosing quantity over quality in their marketing campaigns to home users instead of the industrial market. Quite a change from making the best belt sander on the market, the 503 Locomotive. So, if you are looking for a 4 x 24 belt sander that will run and perform well, look at this sander and strongly consider it. Speaking of dust collection, you will hardly notice any dust as this sander picks up 99% of the dust. Only a small amount was left behind the sander and on the work bench. Excellent dust collection indeed! I truly believe in sharing information with others when I have had excellent results with a tool. This sander is built exceptionally well and performs well and I am glad I passed on the Porter Cable.

Had been using a less expensive Black & Decker sander for several years and finally got decided to buy a more powerful, easier to use sander. This Makita is excellent - cut my sanding time in half (or more)
