This unit is replacing a 20 year old Makita grinder that I purchased years ago. It seems to have most of the same features as the old one. This unit does have a larger motor and is larger overall as well. In general it is not too heavy, but is larger than my old unit which makes it a little more difficult when accomplishing tasks like cutting roof tiles with a diamond blade while up on a roof. For the other typical things, like grinding your ax, or taking down metal, this works really well. I think you would be happy with this unit if you're looking for something small, and versatile, but effective.

I purchased this unit to replace an older model which finally died on me. The older model was lighter but had a smaller motor. This one really ramps it up. It's definitely heavier than my previous model, but it's not so heavy that it causes any type of problems. My previous model was used to cut tiles and bricks, sharpen axes, grind off rebar and a multitude of other things. This one seems to be just about the same, only with a little more powerful motor. So far I'm happy with this purchase.

I have no issues with this angle grinder except the fact that I was using the grinder to cut the stucco and aluminum fin from old windows. I would say if they had a 4 1/2 inch get that one the 4in was good but hard to reach the aluminum fin causing me to run through cutting disks like nothing.
I ended up buying a Ryobi 4 1/2 that I like a lot better then this grinder. The Ryobi has move ergonomics built into it the back handle twist to allow you to to cut at all angles. The handle also allows for the disk install/removal key to be stored there which is great for me because with the this grinder I was always search for were I sat the key down.
I will say the difference between the two is RPM, because with the makita grinder I never was stopped and the Ryobi it got stuck a couple of times. So, it depends on what you are using it for, but dependability wise this tool is great!

Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by thepuzzler older versions of this model did not hold up for long
I have owned 2 older versions of this same model, and either the commutator bearing froze or the armature burnt out and the arcing melts the case. And I use compressed air to clean out the dust after each use as recommended. Trouble is MAkita has the weakest 1 year warranty of the bunch, and that is about how long this model held up. Other trouble is MAkita has one of the only 3/8 " arbor grinders out there and I still have a large selection of discs and wheels to fit this size. Rock and HArd place I am between.

One more Makita tool in my chest. I got one that replaced a 20yrearold work horse that died a noble death. It was a demo tool that had lost the handl and collet, which I had from my old one. The reduced price was welcome as well. The handling was almost as good as the old one.

Purchased this grinder for working on porcelain tiles because I saw people on U-Tube using it. Found it to work very well. For most of the tile grinding, I was holding it with only one hand. So it was important to select a lighter model with a slimmer body so it can safely held.
The tool had more than enough power. The work has to be done very slowly so as to avoid chipping the tile edges.
Good quality. The on-off switch is positioned well. So it is easy to start and stop the tool.
