sander type

does this tool have a 'sanding drum' for conventional sandpaper or does it only take the brush-like sander in the picture?
Asked by: steveorino
The Makita Wheel Sander (9741) uses specific wheels that are designed for its use. For this tool, Homedepot.com offers the Makita 80-Grit Nylon Brush Wheel (794384-3), 100-Grit Medium Nylon Brush Wheel (794379-6), and 240-Grit Fine Nylon Brush Wheel (794383-5).

I looked at the owners manual and it shows a nylon brush, wrenches and a wire brush. I would order with two nylon and two wire brushes. Please quote $

Customer Reviews

7.8 Amp 4-3/4 in. x 4 in. Corded Wheel Sander is rated 5.0 out of 5 by 2.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome Tool!- especially for reclaimed lumber & logs. I have used this sander for over 6 years. I use it primarily on reclaimed lumber- barnwood, rough-sawn flooring & siding, hewn logs. The woods were Pine, Fir, Hemlock & Oak. It removes the soft and/or splintered exterior layer on the wood and leaves a surface much smoother & softer- with most woods a feel almost like driftwood (great for interior wall siding). The softer wood fibers are sanded away, while the harder fibers are left behind. It gives wood an aged/weathered look & feel. I have tried it on "new" wood lumber & the results were OK- a matter of taste- there are less soft wood fibers, so less material is removed & therefore less texture to the lumber. A trial & error process for which woods & which wheels to use. I have primarily used the nylon brushes as the metal wheel is overly aggressive for my needs. A good "de-fuzzing" tool after wood is pressure-washed. Downside(s): 1) the brush wheels are very expensive; 2) it produces a lot of fine dust on drier woods (reclaimed lumber), so purchase the vacuum adapter & prepare to frequently clean the shop vac filter!; 3) Noisy! A high-pitched sound- wear ear muffs or plugs! It is the only tool like it made to my knowledge.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Just alittle time and effort. Used on rough cut pine fresh from the mill for interior walls and floor. I used the wire wheel to remove the worst of the "fuzz" and then after all the planks were done, I switched to the factory supplied wheel. Method used: use the tool at 90 degrees to saw marks first then rotate another 90 and go against the direction sawn. Finally, to smooth out, go with the direction inwhich the wood was cut.
