Need to do a little light sanding? Any sander would work.
Need to achieve a measure of serious sanding? Stop reading reviews and buy this makita. You'll be glad you did.

I needed a belt sander to level my plywood sub-floor in order to install a hardwood floor. This one had favorable reviews for its dust collection ability, and that's what ended up swaying my decision.
Overall, I'm very happy. The sander has plenty of power. As a matter of fact I fired it up without having myself fully set and it took me for a little ride across the floor, so it has plenty of muscle. It has a nice long power cord and as other reviewers had noted it does a great job with dust collection.

Afters 20 years,my trusty Makita 3 X24 sander wore out. I did without for about 6 months, then started looking for a replacement. After a lot of comparison, I had to have my Makita back.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Terry One of the best purchases I've made in a long time
I tried a Porter Cable for a day and dust was everywhere, even with my shop vac attached. With this Makita belt sander, with a shop vac attached, I didn't have to wear a mask. There was virtually no dust in the air. It's the best belt sander I've ever seen made especially when you can adjust the belt to the edge and it stays right there. Amazing!! Oh yeah, the Porter Cable went back.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by JRMitch I should have purchased sooner
I had been reading reviews on larger belt sanders for about a year when I finally decided to purchase this one. I have been making due with an old and worn out cheapo brand with a tear in the dust bag for several years and decided I really needed a new and more powerful sander for rapid removal of stock and leveling sub-floor.
This unit was well packaged and arrived on time and undamaged. I pulled it out and made certain it worked before putting it on the shelf for a couple of weeks waiting for its first workout. When I was finally ready to use it I purchased 50 grit belts and started removing glued down chunks of underlayment on sub-floor for a renovation project. This machine powered through everything I threw at it and handled the 50 grit belts with ease.
The dust collection is amazing compared to what I was using before and with regular emptying most of the dust went where it was supposed to. I was a bit skeptical about the dust bag and how it is closed when it first arrived but it proved to be a non-issue. The bag is held closed by a piece of plastic that slides over the opening and at first I thought it would come off during operation.
The chord is plenty long and with a sub-10 amp motor you can hook it up to most construction extension cords.
The variable speed control is very nice as I can really dial in the best speed for what I am sanding on to ensure I am not removing too much material.
The belt tracking is easy to adjust and for most operations I keep it centered but when I need it to work right up against a wall it can be quickly adjusted to the far right and still stay on the machine.
I have been using this sander since late August 2013 and probably have 10-15 hours on it so far. The longest I have had it on was for about half-an-hour straight (there is a trigger lock to keep it running) and at no time did the motor seem like it was about to quit or lack power. Overall I am very happy with this purchase and hope to get many years of service from it.

I purchased this belt sander to remove stain from a 12x25 spruce deck. I used 40 grit paper and found it to eat up the stain. The sander did not heat up or fail in any way. The dust bag although seemed to be of poor quality proved to work great; far better than expected. The tracking also worked as it should.
Over All I give this product a top rating.......

Heavy, in a good way, good balance and design for flat sanding. A bit boxy and awkward at first but does a good job and feels of a quslity that will last many years

I originally bought a P-C. That one's all metal and has a better price point, but the cooling and dust removal systems are way sub par. Looks like the blower was designed for cooling only and then forced to do both functions without being enlarged, making the tool overheat and also not remove dust.
The Makita costs more but it has properly designed cooling and dust removal. Tracking and variable speed controls are great and the tool is rugged where it counts. The long cord is icing on the cake.
