Can the dust outlet be attached to a vacuum?

Unlike some of the other Makitas, this sander has a round outlet that the dust bag attaches to. Can a vacuum be connected directly to it? Or does that require an adapter?
Asked by: GuessImBobVilaNow
Yes, you can attach a vacuum to the Makita 8.8-Amp 3 in. x 24 in. Corded Belt Sander (9920) if the vacuum hose fits the outlet, however, we do not sell an adaptor for this unit.

It's been a long time since I have used one too, "like High School" and I just retired! I only had to adjust the tracking of the belt and I frayed the edge of the original belt which came with the device. The vacuum bag works and collects most of the dust but fills up fast. Any major sanding and I'll hook up a shop vac even if I have to rig up something to do so! I screwed up my first woodworking project, building a cellar window. The edges look a little wavy, not something I was trying to accomplish, trying to smooth out the frame before installing and I realize I need a little more experience before I go tackling my next project. I'll probably go "Googling", belt sander correct usage before putting this baby to anything again, along with practicing sanding scrap wood!

I decided to restore the pool deck and while sanding the boards the old sander was throwing a lot of dust. I decided to do myself a favor and purchase a new belt sander. After reading reviews along with my experience with other Makita products I chose this sander. What a difference! A quality product which is easy to use and worth every penny. No second thoughts at all.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Choice I needed a belt sander to level my plywood sub-floor in order to install a hardwood floor. This one had favorable reviews for its dust collection ability, and that's what ended up swaying my decision. Overall, I'm very happy. The sander has plenty of power. As a matter of fact I fired it up without having myself fully set and it took me for a little ride across the floor, so it has plenty of muscle. It has a nice long power cord and as other reviewers had noted it does a great job with dust collection.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I should have purchased sooner I had been reading reviews on larger belt sanders for about a year when I finally decided to purchase this one. I have been making due with an old and worn out cheapo brand with a tear in the dust bag for several years and decided I really needed a new and more powerful sander for rapid removal of stock and leveling sub-floor. This unit was well packaged and arrived on time and undamaged. I pulled it out and made certain it worked before putting it on the shelf for a couple of weeks waiting for its first workout. When I was finally ready to use it I purchased 50 grit belts and started removing glued down chunks of underlayment on sub-floor for a renovation project. This machine powered through everything I threw at it and handled the 50 grit belts with ease. The dust collection is amazing compared to what I was using before and with regular emptying most of the dust went where it was supposed to. I was a bit skeptical about the dust bag and how it is closed when it first arrived but it proved to be a non-issue. The bag is held closed by a piece of plastic that slides over the opening and at first I thought it would come off during operation. The chord is plenty long and with a sub-10 amp motor you can hook it up to most construction extension cords. The variable speed control is very nice as I can really dial in the best speed for what I am sanding on to ensure I am not removing too much material. The belt tracking is easy to adjust and for most operations I keep it centered but when I need it to work right up against a wall it can be quickly adjusted to the far right and still stay on the machine. I have been using this sander since late August 2013 and probably have 10-15 hours on it so far. The longest I have had it on was for about half-an-hour straight (there is a trigger lock to keep it running) and at no time did the motor seem like it was about to quit or lack power. Overall I am very happy with this purchase and hope to get many years of service from it.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good Sander I purchased this belt sander for a big job stripping paint. Overall it works pretty well and is plenty powerful but with a couple caveats. The bag tends to fall out or the seal opens and loses dust. This isn't a huge problem but is annoying as Makita can easily make a better seal for the bag. The auto-tracking feature doesn't work as well as it should when the sander gets hot. The front roller tends to stick and it appears the spring is not strong enough to keep tracking consistently. As a result some fiddling with the tracking is needed after continued use.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from awesome the sander was easy to put the belt and dust bag on and ready to sand in less than a minute, worked perfectly for the job it was intended for, and many other jobs to come.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from One of the best purchases I've made in a long time I tried a Porter Cable for a day and dust was everywhere, even with my shop vac attached. With this Makita belt sander, with a shop vac attached, I didn't have to wear a mask. There was virtually no dust in the air. It's the best belt sander I've ever seen made especially when you can adjust the belt to the edge and it stays right there. Amazing!! Oh yeah, the Porter Cable went back.
