Actually I purchased it for the adjustable speed and the auto belt tracking. I also have the little one, Makita 9910 that looks the same except 3x16.
Had this 9404 for couple of weeks, about 12 hours of run time thus far on hardwood floor. Pretty nice, good dust bag, belt tracking dead on and enough power. A 10x10 room will develop over 5 gallons of sawdust and captures about 90% of it in the bag.Tried to connect to my shop vac but the output port is the same size as my hose so it won't fit without a coupler. Need to empty the bag every 3x3 sf of wood surface.
It gets a little warm and slow down just a little when its pushed. Need ear protection: while the sander is relatively quite, the running belt in contact with the hardwood floor generated much noise. Belt is very easy to change. Need to be aware where the cord is at all times because this thing has enough power to rip it apart resulting in a spectacular short. Turns out no need for variable speed, I run it at max speed all the time.
I only have another 4x28 to compare, its a commercial duty Sears from the 70's with all metal construction. Has more power does not slow down, runs much cooler and it tracks right on as well without the auto tracking. Doesn't have the dust port though and one speed. The old stuff is better but what can you do?

I refinished a large dining room table that sits 8 which was in a fire that burnt the middle of the table but needed a belt sander started off with 40 grit then finished of with a 120 grit. Machine had plenty of power. Easy to load and adjusts I had very little dust as the key is to check and empty the bag as it can fill rather quickly depending on grit used and time The machine is weii built and I kepted cord on my shoulder so it would not get caught up in machine.Worth the money

The belt sander is really fast and efficient. Wood removal was a breeze and the dust collector really works to keep me breathing clean air.

I have had Makita power tools in the past and was always satified with them.(ie. table saw. chop saw. circular saw) Still have them after 26 years and they have seen the're share of many home improvement projets plus some contracting over those years. I decided on the makita belt sander because of the variable speed, decibel level and the're proven reliability. I have had two other non makita sanders and they both died. I,m refinishing some older yellow pine floors in two smaller bedrooms and I did not wish to rent a floor sander. Just finished one of them and the variable speed was a must. Looks great!!! and I will save a good dollar doing so. I,m sure I will not be disappointed with my new sander. And the bag works great also.

Everything I own by Makita is top notch. We work our tools hard and pretty much only use DeWalt, Makita, Porter Cable or Milwaukee. You won't be disappointed.
