Customer Questions & Answers

Can the 9404 be turned upside down and placed in a vise to use as a stationary sander?

Asked by: Panels
Some of the answers about "Upside-Down" use and the "Lock ON" button seem to refer for the other model of Makita sander. This one can and has been used upside-down - but not in a vice. Also, the variable speed is a great advantage when used this way.

does this model have a button that can lock the unit in 'ON' position, similar to what is found in the 11-amp version?

pictures don't indicate if lock button is there
Asked by: darren
Yes, like most power sanders it has a lock 'ON' button which allows it to be used upside-down on a table.

It is easy to use and has just the right amount of power. I really like the variable speed control. The automatic tracking feature is really nice. I've used the sander several times in the past couple of months. I'm surprised how effective it is yet no problem with control. The 4 inch wide belt keeps it stable. I mostly use the sander for cutting boards. After I glue up the pieces I scrape off the glue, then sand it with the belt sander. When it is fairly smooth on both sides I run the glued up board through the drum sander to be sure it is absolutely level on both sides. Seems like an extra step? The clue can gum up the sanding belt. I'd rather gum up an inexpensive 4 inch belt that can be changed in 60 seconds rather than gum up the belt on my 19 inch wide drum sander. After the board is flattened with the belt sander, the glue doesn't seem to bother the drum sander. The belt sander is an excellent tool. I recommend it.

It is easy to maneuver. However, my only complaint is that it is somewhat heavier than I expected. The vacuum bag works well and the medium is easy to replace.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very good belt sander for the money. I have had Makita power tools in the past and was always satified with them.(ie. table saw. chop saw. circular saw) Still have them after 26 years and they have seen the're share of many home improvement projets plus some contracting over those years. I decided on the makita belt sander because of the variable speed, decibel level and the're proven reliability. I have had two other non makita sanders and they both died. I,m refinishing some older yellow pine floors in two smaller bedrooms and I did not wish to rent a floor sander. Just finished one of them and the variable speed was a must. Looks great!!! and I will save a good dollar doing so. I,m sure I will not be disappointed with my new sander. And the bag works great also.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This tool is great for serious surface removal. Don't buy it for small surfaces, little jobs or detail work. This tool is great for serious surface removal. Don't buy it for small surfaces, little jobs or detail work. Everything I own by Makita is top notch. We work our tools hard and pretty much only use DeWalt, Makita, Porter Cable or Milwaukee. You won't be disappointed.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from OK for the money Good product, I could use a little more power and sanding speed although it was able to handle everything for my sanding needs. Auto tracking works well, didn't need adjustable speed for which I had it on maximum. It gets a little warm and doesn't move the material as fast relative my old all metal construction 4x24 commercial duty belt sander. The old stuff was built like a battle ship. Problem was it had a high spot rather than sanding evenly across the flat bottom of the shoe plate. I think it was the problem with the cork pad. Well see if Makita has a fix or replace the cork pad. Being right handed I had no problem with the dust bag located on the left side as noted by others. Having the ability to sand right the edge of a wall was a nice feature.
