Rated 2.1 out of 5 by 87 reviewers.
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Basically a GOOD system but its ACHILLES HEAL is its connectors The 2 Watt light fixtures put out an incredible amount of light, are designed so as to prevent Trespass Lighting (light shining into your neighbor's home), and install relatively quickly .... but THE "VAMPIRE" PRONG" CONNECTORS ARE VERY POORLY DESIGNED FOR THE WIRE GAUGE THICKNESS THAT COMES WITH THE KIT !!! I just got off the phone with Malibu's Product Support and they are clueless. But if you read the reviews, you will see that many of the problems with this unit are associated with those Vampire Prong connectors. Each light attaches to the main cable using this connector. The problem is that the connector is designed for a THICKER gauge wire. So when you pinch the 2 ends of the connector together they don't typically make a good connection. The result? Your lights either don't light OR they flicker and stop lighting altogether. And you get upset and return the unit to Home Depot. I'm an Aerospace Engineer (you know, a Rocket Scientist). I conceived and tried several fixes. Here's the simplest, cheapest (essentially free) and easiest one: CAREFULLY use a small knife to cut a SMALL slit in the 75' long power distribution cable that comes with the lights, making sure NOT to cut the cable in half or otherwise damage its insulation. Then insert a small piece of insulator (I used a B-B sized piece of the insulator from my old Malibu system I was replacing) in that slit. It will stay in place as you continue the assembly if you made only a small slit. Then connect the Vampire Prongs as shown in the directions. Design problem fixed! I've had the product for less than a week so I can't respond to any of the other long term complaints (lights not lasting a long time, etc). But I am very impressed with the low wattage used by the LEDs and the incredible amount of light they put out. I expect to save a lot of money on electricity with this system. But one complaint in closing: The system is designed for external mounting in a location that the supplied photo-sensor will not be affected by other lights (like the lights you are installing ... duh!). If you are not careful in where you place the transformer your lights could go on and off, on and off all night long. I prefer my transformers be installed inside my garage. But then the photo-sensor is useless. My solution? I bought an inexpensive LCD timer and leave the Malibu transformer always in the ON position. This solution works great, turning on the lights at exactly the times I want and not using more electricity than is needed. I wish the Malibu system had such an LCD Clock option as I think it makes the whole installation much more beautiful as well as broaodening its installability. Malibu: WAKE UP AND SMELL THE COFFEE AND FIX THE ACHILLES HEAL OF THIS SYSTEM: ITS VAMPIRE PRONG CONNECTORS !!! PS The Malibu / Brinkman Company should be paying me a small fortune for my design work! April 29, 2014
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by High Lamp Failure Rate Bought two 6 light kits and one single light for a total of 13 lights. They were easy to install and look great at night. After 30 days 6 of the 13 lights have failed. Home Depot has replaced them with no question asked but it is a hassle returning them one at a time for the last month. The connectors attached to the lights do not work with the thin cable that came with the kit. Luckily I had to buy a roll of cable to install the lights where I wanted them and it was a heaver gauge that worked with the connectors. I live in south Texas and the transformer sits in the sun all day. The seam at the top of the plastic transformer case opened up exposing the insides of the transformer. Overall this is a nice looking product that has a unacceptably high defect rate and component mismatch issues. Only one star because great appearance and value is not important if product is defective. July 28, 2013
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by garbage! don't waste your time or $. I had these installed by an electrician they went out within 3 months of being installed I call the electrician you came back to look at everything and there is electricity going to every single light. I exchanged lights for new ones at the store and the new ones went out 3 months after they were installed again. if only Home Depot could pay me for my time and my money that I wasted on this product. Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Easy to install, pretty to look at We purchased one set and took them home to install. They were so easy to install and looked so good we immediately went back and purchased two more sets. Have had several compliments on how good they look. Very pleased with our purchase. May 5, 2015
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Avoid like the Plague. Four out of six lights have failed within 5 weeks. The lights would be great, good light output, low power consumption, but cheap construction spoils a product that would be great. Two of the lights are suffering from a solder joint fail - they actually glow dimly and will flash to full brightness if "tapped" on the top, the other two don't light up at all. I don't have my "Depot" receipt any more, and Malibu expect me to pay to ship the defective product back to them - so I am going to cut my losses and look for a better product. Bottom line, in my opinion the product I bought was not fit for purpose. July 7, 2012
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by I like them, not sure why everyone else doesn't... I agree, it was very difficult to snap the connectors into the cable. But, I am a girl with not the most upper body strength and I was able to do it by putting a little muscle in it (and needle-nose pliers). We have had the lights in for several months now and they are still lighting (dusk til dawn) they have not burnt out and they don't flicker. I think for the price they are great, look nice, produce a lot of light and so far are still working just fine. But be prepared to hurt your hands trying to get them clipped on to the wire. Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by They don't last After a full year, only 3 of the six are still working. I was justifying the high price of these thinking they would last several years. It's not worth it if 50% fail. I'm an electrical engineer, so I checked if it was the bulb or the connector, and it was the bulb. I'm going with a different brand to see if they last longer. Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Poor Quality I purchased two sets of these lights in March 2014. So far 8 of the 12 lights have failed. Installation is simple and the lights look good. Too bad they don't last. November 3, 2014
